Early Life

Morris was born April 10, 1990, in Arlington, Texas, to salon owners Greg and Kellie Morris. At her parents’ events, she began singing karaoke songs by LeAnn Rimes and Patsy Cline. In high school, the singer began honing her writing talents by writing stories and poetry.

Her father gave her her first guitar when she was 12, and she began writing song lyrics and performing locally. Morris, who cites Patty Griffin, the Dixie Chicks, and Sheryl Crow as early influences, says, “I started playing all over Texas – any bar or club that would let me in.”

Although her style was predominantly country, she became known for fusing different genres and was dubbed “Gangster June Carter.”

Moving to Nashville and Songwriting

Encouraged by her friend and fellow Texan Kacey Musgraves, Morris left her hometown at age 20 and moved to Nashville to pursue her music career. She experienced her first disappointments when she auditioned for both The Voice and American Idol – and was rejected.

In hindsight, she’s now grateful for those setbacks. “I think about all the crazy talent shows I’ve applied for in my life, and I’m so glad I didn’t make it into any of them… I’m happier about it now,” she previously told Rolling Stone Country.

After those failed auditions, she began writing songs for McGraw (2014’s “Last Turn Home”) and Clarkson (2015’s “Second Wind”).

Still, she never stopped singing and self-released an eponymous EP on Spotify in late 2015. Columbia Nashville offered her a record deal a month later after she reached 2.5 million streams in one month.

“It wasn’t a conscious decision to become an artist,” explained Morris, who started out doing small shows before opening for bands like Little Big Town and Chris Stapleton. “It was more a question of whether I was ready to face my point of view. I’d have been happy just being a songwriter, but there was a voice in my head that said you’ve to sing this.”

In 2018, she was again nominated for a Grammy, this time for Best Country Solo Performance for her hit “I Could Use a Love Song.”

Favorite Maren Morris Quotes

I feel like, genre-wise, the walls are coming down in Nashville. There are so many writers who have moved to town from all walks of life. There’s this immense respect for country, but there are pop songwriters, R&B. Nashville has become sort of this go-to writing city for every genre.

If I had been thrown out into a radio tour when I was 18, or 17, and given a record deal, I don’t think… it would have been a total nightmare.

I’ve always had an ear for melodies, and they veer pop. My lyrics are more country – what I love is the storytelling and the structure, how tight the rhymes can be. But pop melodies have always been intrinsically linked to my writing style.

I’m a ’90s kid, so I loved ‘NSync and the Spice Girls.

I didn’t move to Nashville with any inkling or dreams of getting a record deal. I didn’t have those stars in my eyes. I just wanted to take a break, relax, and figure out songwriting.

To turn the radio on and hear so much more diversity, it’s so refreshing. That voice that cuts through what you’ve been hearing, it’s inspiring.

I didn’t grow up around a lot of souped-up automobiles. I love my Prius.
