Alison Prince also highlights her success story with her first business, Pick Your Plum. This venture was reported to be highly profitable, handling an impressive daily average of 2,000 to 3,000 packages. It even expanded to the point of running a substantial 30,000-square-foot facility with a workforce exceeding 50 employees.

However, it’s worth noting that Pick Your Plum operates as a dropshipping store. I can recognize this because I have experience as a dropshipper myself. The products listed on her store are readily available from AliExpress.

What does this mean? It suggests that she doesn’t require a physical facility or an extensive workforce. When a customer places an order on her store, she essentially makes a purchase from AliExpress, and the supplier handles shipping directly from China to the customer’s location. How much can you make with a generic dropshipping store like Pick Your Plum? Well, from my experience, not much, if anything at all. Why is that? I’ve dabbled in eCommerce, and I can say that it’s getting tougher by the day. If you’re looking to build a profitable eCommerce business, be ready to invest a lot of time and effort to grasp its complexities.

Here are a few reasons why turning a profit in eCommerce can be challenging:

1. Delivery Dilemma

Speedy delivery is a challenge for smaller e-commerce stores. Many customers consider this a drawback compared to in-person shopping. In physical stores, you can take your purchase home instantly, but online, it often takes a week or more to receive your order. Even though giants like Amazon offer same-day shipping, it only became profitable with services like Amazon Prime and their large member base.

2. Price Wars

Customers can instantly compare prices online, eliminating the need to visit multiple stores. Some shoppers relentlessly seek the lowest price. This means you must constantly stay competitive and adjust your prices. Your competitors can easily track your pricing, making it a competitive challenge.
