Early Life

Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1961. Walsh was the second of four children born to a Dublin glazier. He has an MBA from Trinity College Dublin.

Career

A trainee pilot for Aer Lingus at age 17, Walsh knew how to fly a plane before he could drive. He rose rapidly through the ranks at Aer Lingus, becoming CEO days before his 40th birthday. Following 9/11, Aer Lingus was losing $2 million a day, and radical solutions were needed.

Walsh cut 33 percent of the workforce, sold non-essential assets, and cut costs by a third. Although he successfully moved Aer Lingus into profit, Walsh resigned after failing to persuade the Irish government to accept privatization plans.

He became CEO of British Airways (BA) in 2005 during unprecedented turmoil and industrial disputes.

His initial success in sorting out BA’s pension plan was followed by baggage and security crises, a fuel-price surcharge scandal involving senior executives, and, perhaps most damaging of all, the chaotic opening of Heathrow’s Terminal 5 in 2008.

Record financial results and the waiving of his bonus that year helped Walsh to keep his job, but BA remained vulnerable to the global economic slowdown.
