William James Adams was born on March 15, 1975, in Los Angeles, California. Debra, his mother, raised him on her own after his father — whom he has never met — abandoned the family. Adams grew up in a housing project, describing himself as “raised in the ghetto, on welfare, two minutes from homeless” to the Daily Beast.
Having music as an outlet allowed him to see beyond his depressing surroundings. He met Allan Pineda in high school (stage name: apl.de.ap). With several others, they combined their hip-hop and break-dancing styles to form the rap group Atban Klann.
They were signed to Eazy-Ruthless E’s Records label in 1992 and appeared as guests on his 5150 – Home 4 Tha Sick EP that year. They recorded an album called Grass Roots, which was never released, though a single from it, “Puddles of H2O,” was released in 1994 before the group was dropped from the label following Eazy-death E’s in 1995.
Forming the Black Eyed Peas
In 1995, will.i.am renamed the group first to The Black Eyed Pods and then to Black Eyed Peas. At this point, the lineup consisted of will.i.am, apl.de.ap and Taboo. After signing with Interscope Records, the trio released their debut album, Behind the Front, in June 1998, which featured an accessible, fun style that was still undeniably rooted in hip-hop.
Rolling Stone liked the “alterna-rap” feel of the music, noting that the album offered “an organic blend of sampled melodies and live instrumentation aimed at those of us seeking a little enlightenment with our well-oiled boogie.” The group had also begun hiring backup singers, including Macy Gray, Sierra Swan, Kim Hill and Dawn Beckman, a move that hinted at the group’s future success.
The Peas’ second album, Bridging the Gap, was released in 2000, and the single “Request + Line,” a track featuring Macy Gray, became their first entry in the Billboard Hot 100. In 2001, will.i.am released his first solo album, Lost Change, in which he took a more experimental approach to music.
Will.i.am realized that a female voice would improve the group’s potential and asked Nicole Scherzinger to become a member of the group, but after she declined, he signed Fergie – her powerful voice paved the way to stardom. The Peas’ album Elephunk, released in 2003, was a huge success thanks to the single “Where Is the Love” featuring Justin Timberlake.
The song reached No. 8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and became the best-selling single of 2003 in the U.K. Led by will.i.am as frontman, producer and songwriter, more hits followed, including “I Gotta Feeling,” “Boom Boom Pow” and “Let us Get It Started.
The quartet sold more than 76 million albums worldwide and won six Grammys. They continued to release albums, including Monkey Business (2005), The END (2009), The Beginning (2010) and Translation (2020). But they had also lost favor with some critics because of successful but controversial songs like 2005’s “My Humps,” which was rated the most annoying song by Rolling Stone readers.
All-Star Music Producer
Will.i.am has produced music for other established acts such as Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson, as well as his one-time bandmate Fergie after she left the Black Eyed Peas. Will.i.am, inspired by Fergie’s success, released his own solo album, Songs About Girls, in 2007. #willpower, his 2013 album, featured the duets “#ThatPOWER” with Justin Bieber, “Fall Down” with Miley Cyrus, and “Scream & Shout” with Britney Spears. He’s also stayed involved in hip hop, contributing to songs by The Game, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Too Short, and Common.
will.i.am: The Brand
Will.i.am has branched out into acting, appearing as John Wraith in the 2009 blockbuster X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He has also appeared on American Idol and The X Factor, as well as The Voice UK and The Voice Australia. He has also studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and has launched several lines, including Ekocycle, a Coca-Cola collaboration that incorporates recycled plastic bottles into new products such as garments, bikes, and luggage.
He is a Beats Electronics shareholder after a personal invitation from Dr. Dre to invest, an Intel director of creative innovation, and has his own camera accessory line. He recently opened a high-tech laboratory in Hollywood and told The Sunday Times Magazine, “Now I’m making devices.” Music isn’t the only thing that technology can do. “Technology is the new rock ‘n’ roll.”
He has reportedly been working on products such as rucksacks with built-in speakers, smart spectacles, and a smartwatch collaboration with Gucci. However, the reaction to his first few releases – the i.am+ iPhone camera accessories and the Puls smartwatch – has been overwhelmingly negative. Techradar praised will.i.am for his embrace of technology, but added, “Sorry Puls, there’s plenty to dislike here.” The design, display, lack of apps, battery life, and the worst texting experience I’ve ever had… I think that’ll suffice.”
Activism, Accolades and Art
Will.i.am has also dabbled in politics and social activism. He created songs and a website to help Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008. His inventive music video for “Yes We Can,” which spliced together snippets of Obama’s speeches, won an Emmy and a Clio award.
He also has his own educational foundation, I.Am.Angel; one of its initiatives, I.Am.Steam (Steam stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), exposed underserved students to learning opportunities outside the classroom, earning him recognition as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2013.
With a new solo album on the way, the return of the Black Eyed Peas, and his ongoing roles on UK television and behind the boards for top artists, will.i.am shows no signs of slowing down.
