In business terms, the company isn’t that dissimilar to other popular online ESL providers such as Qkids, DadaABC or Cambly.

The company began operations in 2013 and has since been awarded the US-China Entrepreneurship Leader Award and the Top 21 Global Innovation Award, among others. 

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to verify this claim or find a source that would allow me to provide links to these awards.

I’m not disputing that this claim is plausible; I just couldn’t find any evidence online.

It’s important to know if the system actually delivers what it promises, and if you can make a living as a teacher with it.

Is VIPKid a Scam or Legit?

Can we trust VIPKid, or is it a scam? VIPKid is the real deal. VIPKid is a legitimate “side hustle” for teachers who want to use their skills and education to make money online, and I’ll go into some of the obstacles and growing pains they experience.

Some people even do it full-time and earn a handsome income doing it.

How Does VIPKid Work?

Obtaining employment is the first challenge. This is not a standard freelance platform where you can list your skills and experience and then apply for work.

Educators who want to work with VIPKids must go through a rigorous application process (which is ultimately a good thing for students and teachers who are hired). The requirement of a four-year college degree is clearly spelled out, and it is explicitly stated that no exceptions will be made.

Missing a four-year college degree? If you are looking for a way to make money online, I recommend the program I recommend the most.

You will have to pass an interview and a trial lesson if you think you have what it takes to teach students. You will need to demonstrate, for example, that you can manage your time effectively and elicit thorough responses from students if you teach English as a second language.

Classroom Management

The teacher keeps order in the classroom by praising students’ efforts and correcting their mistakes. There is a mechanism that provides incentives for good behavior and takes into account the age of the child.

Lesson Planning

The teacher has thought through the lesson in advance and has set interesting, fun, and educational tasks that are described in detail (no interrupting the class to read advice).

Efficient Pacing & Timing

The class is progressing at a reasonable pace, and the teacher is keeping everyone on schedule. The teacher’s goal is to get through all the slides, but the actual time spent on each slide depends on how well the students understand the material.

Rapport

After a friendly greeting or introduction, the teacher gets into the lesson. He or she maintains a friendly demeanor throughout the lesson and ends the lesson well (i.e., not abruptly).

Energy Level

The teacher demonstrates an appropriate level of enthusiasm during the various phases of the lesson, including reading, activities, introductions, etc.

Lesson Objectives

Teaches lessons on topics indicated in the lesson plan (math, phonics, vocabulary, HFW, social studies, etc.).

An online discussion claimed that only 10% of people who apply for a job are actually hired. Regardless of whether that number is true or not (it was probably the best estimate), it’s obvious that not everyone who applies gets hired.

There are other ways to make money online if you don’t get hired by VIPKid.

It’ll take some time before you get a job. During this time, you can earn quick pocket money by taking surveys on reputable websites like surveyjunkie.com and by doing online activities that you’d already planned to do, such as exploring the Internet and playing games using a service like Inbox Dollars. Besides, you can also get paid for things such as surfing the Internet and watching videos.

There’s no doubt that these platforms can’t bring in as much money as VIPKid.

If you can’t find a job, starting an online business is another option.

An internet business could be ideal if you want to work from home for health reasons, young children, or just to have more time and flexibility in your life.

VIPKid Complaints

We’ve mentioned some of the positives, but as I said, VIPKid is a young company (founded in 2013) that’s still working on its bugs. Among the many concerns that have been raised are the following:

Technical Issues

Problems with technology can be very frustrating. It can be anything from a temporary disconnect to the inability to teach at all. Your ability to earn a living depends on your ability to teach.

This is just one more reason why it might be unwise to make this your full-time job, especially if you plan to leave your current position at some point. This is an option to think about if you’ve to live paycheck to paycheck.

However, VIPKid also loses money if the system fails. So I’m confident that they take technical difficulties seriously and make an effort to fix them as soon as possible.

It’s not just VIPKid either. There’s never been a company I’ve worked for that didn’t have technical issues. They’re annoying, and you shouldn’t have to deal with them all the time, regardless of your financial situation.

Inconsistent Hiring Practices

Even though there are numerous negative comments about VIPKid’s recruitment policy on the Internet, you should take them with a grain of salt. These comments are the result of annoyance rather than careful observation.

Someone who has invested a lot of time in their application and interview will be disappointed if they are not selected. Someone with years of experience in the classroom will find this an insult to their intelligence and a blow to their pride.

I then feel like the rejected contestants from American Idol who complain to Ryan Seacrest that the judges do not have a clue.

Those who were not chosen by VIPKid have every right to be dissatisfied.

I’m not suggesting that they’re completely off base here… Unfortunately, verifying their claims is a tedious process. Not everyone with years of classroom experience can transfer their methods to the virtual classroom. Chances are, you’re just not good in front of the camera. The truth is: I’m not.

Connecting With Students

That I’m not a teacher doesn’t prevent me from understanding this. Some educators will be comfortable in the digital classroom, while others will have a hard time building meaningful relationships with their students there. Kids, especially the younger ones.

Time Zone

Because of the nature of our round world, a day in China is a night in North America, and vice versa. Now, this may not always be true… but it is close enough for government work. Since China does not follow the same pattern as the United States in terms of its peak work hours, a typical 9-to-5 work week is unlikely.

Parental Complaints and Control

Some VIPKid users have complained about the difficulty of communicating with parents, who they feel exert too much influence on their child’s education and/or make too many negative comments, which VIPKid usually agrees with. Parents are the real customers of the children, so it is only natural that they feel this way.

Does VIPKid Global Give Raises?

VIPKid Global teachers do not receive annual salary increases. One positive aspect of this tiered compensation system is that teachers can earn more money the more hours they teach. The bonus teachers receive increases as they progress through the tier system.

Cash bonuses for teaching a certain number of hours per month have been replaced by a token-based system since the expansion of VIPKid Global. Tokens are earned, for example, by increasing the available slot capacity or by watching educational films. Through the student portal, students can use them to reserve “power slots” or buy gem boxes.

How Do You Apply For Vipkid Jobs?

The application process at VIPKid consists of several steps. First, you must submit your application on the website. 

Then, you either schedule a 30-minute appointment with a VIPkid recruiter to demonstrate your teaching skills, or you film a demo lesson on your own time and send it in for review.

The organization wants to make sure you can teach the highly structured curriculum as it is intended, while also using effective English as a Second Language (ESL) and classroom management strategies. 

After the interview, you will receive a series of films detailing the pedagogical methods, curriculum guidelines, and technological infrastructure of the VIPKid platform. You will then spend some time preparing to simulate a full-length lesson with a mentor.

What Are The Technology Requirements?

To get the most out of the VIPKid platform, you need a stable and fast internet connection. 

When it comes to staying connected, some teachers use a HotSpot in remote locations. Audio quality can be improved with high-quality headphones, while your computer’s microphone will suffice in a pinch. You will also need either the Chrome or Firefox web browser and a webcam.

How Much Does VIPKid Global Platform Pay?

VIPKid Global’s base wage of $7 per class ($14 per hour) is lower than what the China-based VIPKid platform offers. The company claims that with the right incentives, this rate can rise to $22. Teachers are not allowed to set their own rates on the VIPKid Global platform.

Will I Need To Sign A Contract?

To work for VIPKid, you must be available for at least six months at a time. Your contract will be reviewed after six months to determine whether or not it should be renewed based on student and parent feedback and the number of classes you teach.

Is Vipkid A Multi-Level Marketing Company?

Some VIPKid teachers are eager to expand their team. Teachers who recruit new teachers receive a one-time referral fee, but they do not earn anything further from these teachers.

What Are VIPKid Global Teaching Hours?

To use the VIPKid Global platform, users are not required to record a certain number of hours. Teachers can set their own hours and change them weekly if needed.

Due to the international nature of the platform, teachers must take into account the different time zones to meet their students during their “peak” times in their home countries. 

You may need to work at inconvenient times (late evenings or early mornings) to attract enough customers to make it worthwhile.

How Long Are Vipkid Global Classes?

VIPKid Global lessons last 25 minutes and start every full and half hour. After each class, students have 5 minutes to complete post-class tasks, such as writing comments or visiting the restroom.

VIPKid Global Pros and Cons

Pros:

• You have the option of teaching a live demo or a “smart” (recorded) demo.
• Lesson plans, teaching resources, and a reliable syllabus are provided.
• Ability to teach anywhere (if you meet residency requirements)
• Teachers choose their own schedule with no minimum number of hours required.

Cons:

• Only residents of the United States and Canada are eligible (with the exception of the states of California, New York, and Washington)
• Compared to the China platform, the fixed base pay rate has decreased.
• Bookings for international students are difficult to obtain.
• Insufficient autonomy (very prescriptive teaching)
• Management communication was erratic during the company transition.

VIPKid Reviews: Final Verdict

Online education has been around for some time, but it’s only just beginning. Many industry leaders, such as Peter Diamandis, believe that classroom instruction will eventually move to the Internet (including virtual reality). I probably agree with you there.

Given the high cost of building and maintaining physical sites (including utilities and transportation networks) for a given area, online education may soon replace traditional schools as the norm. Especially in developing countries.
