Early Life

On June 23, 1943, he was born in New Haven, Connecticut, to Vinton Thurston Cerf and Muriel (née Gray). His father worked in an aeronautics company, and his mother was a housewife.

He attended ‘Van Nuys High School,’ where future scientists Jon Postel and Steve Crocker were classmates.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from ‘Stanford University’ in California in 1965. Following that, he was hired as a systems engineer at ‘IBM’ (International Business Machines Corporation).

At the same time, he was working on his master’s degree in computer science from the ‘University of California, Los Angeles (ULCA), which he received in 1970. During his post-graduate studies, he met engineer Robert E. (Bob) Kahn, who was already involved with the ‘ARPANet’ network.
