The House of Valentino
In 1959, Valentino left Paris to open a fashion house in Rome. He modeled his company after the grand houses he saw in Paris. Valentino quickly gained recognition for his red dresses in his early shows, in a shade that became widely known as “Valentino red.”
Valentino met Giancarlo Giammetti in Rome in 1960. Giammetti, an architecture student, quickly became Valentino’s professional and romantic partner. Together, they built Valentino SpA into a globally recognized brand. Valentino made his international debut at the Pitti Palace in Florence in 1962.
The show cemented the designer’s reputation and drew socialites and aristocratic women from all over the world. Valentino’s designs quickly rose to prominence as the pinnacle of Italian couture. He received the prestigious Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1967. Among his clients were Begum Aga Khan, Queen Paola of Belgium, and actresses Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn.
Jacqueline Kennedy was one of Valentino’s most famous clients. Kennedy became interested in Valentino’s work after seeing friends dressed in several Valentino ensembles.
Kennedy ordered six black and white dresses in 1964, which she wore during the year following her husband, President John F. Kennedy’s, assassination.
She would remain a friend and client for the rest of her life, associating the Valentino name with her own iconic status in the fashion world. Valentino also designed Kennedy’s wedding gown for Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1968.
Valentino spent much of the 1970s in New York, despite his strong ties to Florence and Rome. Aside from his friendship with Kennedy, he became close to artists such as Andy Warhol.

This final show, held at the Musée Rodin in Paris, featured legendary models such as Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, and Eva Herzigova, all of whom had previously worked with Valentino on the runway.
