UserTesting Review – Scam or Legit? Truth Exposed!

Are you looking for a UserTesting review? But you may wonder if it is a scam.

Having financial worries is a challenge. Being unemployed or just looking for a way out of a job you loathe.

Having been in this situation myself, I know how you feel. These are difficulties that many people have. You have the impression that there is no way out.

UserTesting is one of the companies that offer remote work opportunities. But what about their credibility?

As a freelancer who works from home, I am always looking for new sources of income. There are moments when I just need to step away from the keyboard.

UserTesting seemed like a good way for me to make some extra money.

In this review, I talk about the people behind UserTesting, the services they offer, and how it all works. I also go over some of the downsides, the requirements, and the application process.

As a disclaimer, I’m not affiliated with UserTesting. It means I’m not paid to write this review. So you can rest assured that you will get an honest and unbiased review from me.

At the end of this review, I’ll also tell you the best alternative to UserTesting that has enabled me to make a full-time passive income online.

What Is UserTesting?

UserTesting, which has been around since 2007, is a human insight platform that provides companies with data on how their target customers interact with their products.

Some of the most well-known companies in the world, including Facebook, Wayfair, Ford, Alaska Airlines, Adobe, Walmart and many more, have used this service to learn how to better serve their customers as they develop their products, communications and applications.

It is very similar to a focus group, but takes place online and is usually unmoderated. This means that no one is present to ask questions, participants do not have to interact with others, and they can simply follow the brand’s predetermined instructions onthe screen.

UserTesting is a platform where companies can connect with users who are willing to test their website, app or product in exchange for honest feedback. Companies interested in using UserTesting resources can choose between an Individual plan and an Enterprise plan.

If the company gathers enough data and comments using UserTesting, it should have enough information to significantly improve the product.

Is UserTesting.com a Scam or Legit?

UserTesting is not a scam. After reading this far, you should have no doubts about the reliability of UserTesting. But if you’re like me and you’re just skimming to find out, let’s talk about it.

Simply put, you’re here because you want to know if UserTesting is worth your time and effort to make extra money. You’re wondering if UserTesting is a good investment.

UserTesting is a reputable company that you can indeed make money with. Of course, whether you should spend the money on it or not depends on your individual requirements and circumstances.

UserTesting has been around since 2007, which is an eternity in web years.

Since then, a variety of companies have sprung up to fill the void. They offer everything from user testing and surveys to micro-tasks like picture taking and price research.

As a result of increased competition, however, costs have fallen as more vendors have entered the market to meet the needs of others. As a result, the market value of user testers like you and me is declining.

As a result, UserTesting may not be worth it if you have a tight schedule and significant financial constraints.

And then there are people’s concerns. UserTesting, for example, is often accused of being a scam (as are, to be fair, comparable companies like TryMyUI and UserFeel).

I’ll address the criticisms in detail later, but first I’d like to present the facts that refute the claim that UserTesting is a scam.

UserTesting Is “Old”

Most scams fail within the first few months. It is possible that a few of them survive another year or two. But at least their reputation is ruined.

The scam continues, but the scammers are eventually exposed and the name is changed.

For almost twenty years, UserTesting has been known simply as UserTesting (at least that’s what it feels like at my age).

Strong Social Presence

UserTesting.com is well established in the social media world, and it’s not just because of their young age. About 80,000 people follow them on Facebook, and another 43,000 follow them on Twitter.

The company has also built up a large following on social media sites like Instagram and LinkedIn.

Physical Location and Phone Number

The fact that UserTesting has a real headquarters should be considered the most convincing evidence of its legitimacy.

Three other remote locations are also mentioned. Their Chamblee, Georgia location is clearly visible on this Google map, as is a second location that may be a rented coworking space. The door sticker for UserTesting is smudged, but still legible.

While I can understand why some users are upset, I can assure you that UserTesting is a reputable company and your data is safe.

How Does UserTesting Work?

They work with a wide range of international companies looking for user opinions on their digital products.

As a user of usertesting.com, you help companies improve their digital offerings by telling them which features you find most useful, what could be improved, and why. Along the way, you’ll also make a financial gain.

For the Companies

Organizations can sign up for a free trial of testing services on the company’s website. Fill out a form with your name, contact information, work email, company name, number of employees, and country of origin.

You can hire the company for user testing of your website or web application if you think their services are beneficial. Depending on the scenario, they help companies find the customers from whom they get the most valuable input and learn what can be improved in terms of user experience.

You can teach the whole company by first gathering customer feedback and then answering crucial product development questions.

Founded in 2007, this website has been around for a while. If your company is looking for a user testing tool, you should seriously consider this website. This app is frequently mentioned on social networks and receives excellent reviews from its users.

There is a free version ideal for individuals and a paid version ideal for businesses.

The user testing panel selects the participants for the basic account tests itself. The paid version lets you select your own team members.

The standard plan costs $49 per movie and is limited to a maximum of 15 sessions per calendar year. The basic testing features and test templates are also available with the individual plan.

We will work with you to set up special pricing for your Pro account. Free trials are available and offer features such as sophisticated testing, quantitative data, customer experience analytics, management controls, and a better video player.

For business users, it offers longitudinal studies that provide you with regular data on the evolution of your product’s user experience and its position relative to the competition.

It’s easy to set up and run tests because you get audiovisual content and editable survey questions that you can use afterwards. You can create mobile, tablet, and desktop tests to see how users respond. You get your test results instantly. The layout of the exam reports is professional.

It’s possible to jump to the points in the record where the user first had problems, track how long it took them to complete a task, and then derive their Net Promoter Score (NPS).

Optmyzr, Moz Pro, Picreel, SE Ranking and Segmentify are some of the closest competitors.

For the Testers

When we say they strive for the “right” customers, we mean people like you who’d be the most qualified members of the tester panel.

When you sign up as a tester with usertesting.com, you take tests that are tailored to your interests and background, and that include aptitude tests to make sure you’re the right person to provide feedback.

For example, if you’re participating in a test for a shopping website, the first step is a “screener” in which you answer questions about your shopping habits and preferences.

Only if your answers match the tester you are looking for will you be admitted to the test; otherwise, he or she will be removed from your candidate pool.

The tests you sign up for will test how well you can communicate in English. You’ll be asked questions related to the website or app you are testing, and you’ll be asked to provide feedback about your experience as you complete the test items on the website.

In other types of testing, you and the customer have in-depth conversations about the usability of the site and your impressions of the user experience.

You must meet the following conditions to join UserTesting:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must be able to communicate in English.
  • UserTesting’s screen/voice recording software (must be downloaded).
  • Mac or PC?
  • A stable internet connection.
  • Microphones can be internal or external.

Getting Paid to Test

While many companies and organizations could benefit from UserTesting’s services, I doubt that’s why you’re here.

You’re probably here because you know you can get paid to participate in testing.

Below is a summary of each step:

  1. Enter your email address and take a simple practice test to join UserTesting’s global network.
  2. After answering a series of screening questions, you will be offered exam opportunities. New exams will be posted regularly.
  3. By testing and sharing your feedback, you can help brands improve their products and services. You will need to download screen and voice recording software to record your observations.

UserTesting Registration

UserTesting requires that you sign up with your email address. After you submit your application to join the UserTesting Contributor Network, you will receive a confirmation email.

To complete your application, please visit the link provided.

After that, you will see a short introductory video in which a participant uses a website, records her screen while doing so, describes what she sees and does, and then answers some questions.

After that, there is a video with advice on how to contribute effectively.

UserTesting Contributor Tips

Tip 1: Make sure you record in a quiet, distraction-free place

Tip 2: Adopt the mindset of the scenario

Tip 3: Complete each task before moving on.

Tip 4: Speak your thoughts out loud.

Tip 5: Ask questions and add comments

The next step is to take a mock exam. Since your screen and voice are being recorded, make sure no sensitive information is visible to UserTesing.

Also, take at least 48 hours to get approval after you submit the test results. Once you have received permission to begin testing, you may do so.

Does UserTesting record your face?

You may be wondering (as you are right now) if your face is recorded in any way when you sign up for a user testing site.

Not at all; UserTesting will not capture your likeness in any way. However, your conversation and the contents of your screen will be recorded. Close or minimize any windows with sensitive information before you start a test, and make sure you do the same if you have any personal information on your screen.

UserTesting App

UserTesting is compatible with iOS and Android as well as desktop computers like Windows and Mac.

With the simple and fast UserTesting tool, you can run tests even if you use a public computer or a family member’s computer.

And, come on, it’s not easy to get off the couch (or is it just me?). Call me crazy, but if I can make money doing it from the comfort of my “after work” cushions, then I’ll take that opportunity.

UserTesting.com Supported Countries

Currently UserTesting.com is accepting applications from the following countries:

  • US
  • Canada
  • Europe
  • Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Asia Pacific
  • Africa, Middle East, and India

UserTesting Jobs

It is safe to say that there is only one type of job in the user testing industry, and that is as a user tester (also called a contributor). For example, you can work as a tester of websites, mobile applications, software, video games, etc.

In most cases, education and experience are not required. It is important to know that certain tests require admission criteria.

The screeners and questionnaires used in user testing are similar to those used in Internet surveys.

Screeners are a series of questions designed to determine whether or not you are eligible for a test. And they do not always do this in the most transparent way, either.

For example, a UserTesting client running a parenting website will ask parents of infants and toddlers to rate the usability of the website. Since they are the target audience, this is only logical.

Only those who are qualified to apply should do so. However, since we do not live in an ideal environment, many people who are not parents will also apply. Some people even lie about their childlessness in order to participate in the test.

Determining who is telling the truth and who is not is the main goal of any examination process.

There are numerous reports of dissatisfaction with this type of screener testing, but please note that UserTesting NOT is responsible for its development. Instead, the client is responsible for creating them.

A game developer who needs beta testers is another good example. You probably will not do well on the test if the last video game you played was Super Mario Bros.

Conversely, you might be asked to try out a generic shopping website that targets a variety of customers.

UserTesting jobs, then, can target a narrow or broad audience.

Does Usertesting.Com Do Surveys?

UserTesting.com does indeed conduct surveys. UserTesting surveys are used in conjunction with usability testing to provide a more accurate picture of the user experience than standalone online surveys.

Pre-test Surveys

UserTesting uses pre-test questionnaires, often known as hiring surveys, to assess the suitability of applicants. In this scenario, some possible questions for the UserTest survey are:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Profession
  • Hobbies
  • Marital Status
  • Income
  • Do you rent or own your home, etc.

In addition, you can expect to be asked questions that are tailored to the product you’re evaluating. Common questions of this type include:

  • What actions do you perform with the product?
  • Which functions do you use most often?
  • Do you use the product for personal or professional reasons?
  • How do you intend to use the product?
  • What prompted you to start using the product?
  • Do other members of your family or team use the product?
  • How did you learn about the product and why did you choose it over others?

Since this isn’t about a specific object, these inquiries are by definition very general. However, if the product in question is tax preparation software (as an example), you might be asked to detail your accounting practises and answer questions aimed at determining the level of sophistication of your tax reporting.

Questions about your team’s communication style and the average number of hours per day you spend using the software are likely to come up during a productivity tool test.

Post-Test Surveys

When you are done with the exam, you may need to fill out a survey. These UserTesing surveys are designed to review or reinforce ideas you expressed during the exam. Below are some illustrations:

  • How much you resent a particular feature.
  • What you think is the best or most useful feature of the product.
  • Your overall assessment of the product.
  • How would you improve the product?

You may be redirected from the UserTesting website to an external survey tool such as SurveyMonkey if you wish to participate in their surveys.

Can You Really Make Money with UserTesting?

In fact, UserTesting.com is a legitimate means of financial gain.

According to their website, you can earn up to $60 per test.

To be clear, this online platform is good for earning some money on the side, but you should not rely on it to be a reliable and permanent source of income. And this is for the simple reason that there is a cap on the number of orders you can accept, and this cap is influenced by a variety of factors (place of residence, quality rating, etc.).

The website itself does not make empty promises, which is a plus. UserTesting is a legitimate way to make some money on the side, but the website makes it clear that you can not get rich doing it.

They also make it clear that various factors, such as your demographics and quality score, will determine what opportunities are offered to you.

How Much Do You Make on User Testing?

The cost of a test can range from zero to several thousand dollars, depending on complexity and duration. As a rule of thumb, you can expect to earn between $3 and $60 per test. Typically, about $10 per evaluation.

For each 20-minute video you watch, you’ll be paid $10. Specifically, you’ll need to access a website or use an app via a computer or mobile device to complete a series of tasks before providing a verbal comment on the quality of the user experience.

Your English language skills should be sufficient for constructive criticism. On average, you should allow between 10 and 20 minutes for these tasks. If you wish to pay, you will need a PayPal account. Your location and access to PayPal are requirements.

Payment will be made after 7 days of passing the exam.

UserTesting Payment Methods

Making money online is another story. How to get paid is yet another.

So how does UserTesting generate revenue?

The only payment option right now is PayPal, which is also my preferred payment method. So if you want to get paid, you need to have a PayPal account.

Daily payouts are made with no minimum requirements. However, that does not mean that you will get paid immediately after every test. If all goes well, you should get paid within a week.

UserTesting Reviews and Complaints

Making money with UserTesting is fantastic, but the path is not always easy. There is a flood of complaints and bad reviews.

However, I feel obligated to mention that the ratio of positive to critical reviews is often skewed.

On the one hand, people are more likely to write a negative review. Customers speak up when they feel they have been taken advantage of or treated unfairly.

However, many companies offer discounts, rebates or freebies in return for a positive review.

I found it interesting that many reviewers, even those who gave the service a positive review, mentioned that they had to take several different tests in order to use the service.

Even a five-star reviewer admits that you probably don’t even qualify for 10% of the tests; yet the screeners take only 15 seconds and consist of a few questions.

After reading what I’m sure are hundreds of reviews, it’s clear that your own expectations and views have a big impact on what you think of something.

While I’ve no reason to dispute the veracity of many reviews, I also don’t have enough information to determine which ones are genuine and which ones are either exaggerated or maliciously written to hurt UserTesting.

We can only make assumptions because there are two sides to every story.

No, I’m not saying this to make a plea for UserTesting. The number of complaints is indeed exaggerated. What I’m saying is that we don’t know all the facts and we only see one side of the story.

Pros of UserTesting

  • The working method is simple, user-friendly and systematic.
  • Registration is a breeze.
  • Quick response to your selection status, meaning you know within 48 hours whether your sample has been approved or rejected.
  • Standardization of payment method They only accept payments through your PayPal account.
  • Clear and well-defined guidelines for performing tests. The tasks you need to perform are well defined.
  • Before you start real tests, you should watch these tutorials. You can use these videos to learn how to do your best on the tests and get a 5-star rating.
  • No money is required to become a tester on this platform. Your communication skills, profile and demographics will be taken into consideration.
  • No legal papers or proofs are required to sign up.
  • You should receive reasonable compensation for each test you take. The fee ranges from $3 to $60, depending on the type and duration of the test.
  • Other options for people living near the United States.

Cons of UserTesting

  • You will not receive email updates when new tests are added.
  • You must always be logged into your account and check your dashboard for new tests.
  • Screener disqualification is discouraging: it is unclear whether or not you qualify for the tests that include a screener. After I signed up, I was sent a plethora of tests on a regular basis, but each of those tests included a screener, and unfortunately I did not qualify for them. This left me a little disappointed.
  • It is difficult to qualify for the exam.
  • Excellent English skills and technical skills are required. If you do not have these, usertesting.com is not for you.
  • If you do not live near the United States, your options are limited.
  • It is not recommended as a regular employment and income alternative.
  • The mobile version is quite slow and takes a long time to load.

Tips For Getting Selected On UserTesting.Com

Here are some suggestions on how to increase your chances of being selected for user testing:

  • When submitting the mock exam, make sure the audio quality is satisfactory.
  • You should be fluent in English. It is not necessary that you have a large vocabulary; rather, it is important that you speak clearly. You must be able to express your opinion openly.
  • Sit in a quiet, noise-free environment with good sound (preferably headphones).
  • Close any unnecessary windows that you do not want to be seen in the sample video.
  • Speak clearly and loudly. Continue talking about the tasks you are working on.
  • Provide detailed feedback and comments about your user experience.

How Many Tests Can You Do On UserTesting?

The frequency of your examinations is determined mainly by operational needs. The norm is variation. Every day you can expect 1-2 new exams on your dashboard.

Your profile, the equipment you own, and your rating all play a role in the amount of testing you receive (generally, testers with higher ratings are assigned more tasks).

In my experience, I received an average of two tests per day in the first few days after I signed up. Unfortunately, I did not manage to get through the preliminary stages of all the exams.

UserTesting Review: Final Verdict

You think user testing is a fantastic way to work from home and make money.

The risk associated with revealing private information is the biggest drawback. That’s why I can’t wholeheartedly endorse it. The privacy-conscious among you might want to reconsider using UserTesting.

The good thing is that registration is free. It could be just what you’re looking for, provided you’re willing to divulge some personal information. Especially if you’re suffering from the burden of mounting debts and unpaid obligations.

You may be a full-time student or a parent raising a child on your own. This may be because you can’t work regularly for health reasons, or because you loathe your current position and would do anything to get out of it.

If this is the case and a higher income is a priority for you, an internet business might be the way to go. Let me tell you the best way to start an online business in the next section.
