Usborne Books Review – Scam or Legit? Truth Exposed!

Are you looking for an Usborne Books Review? Is Usborne Books a scam?

If you want to make money online, you may have heard of Usborne Books. There is a good chance that you heard about Usborne Books through someone – a friend or family member.

But since there are so many scams online, you may wonder if you can trust it or not.

I have a passion to help people explore the best money-making opportunities online, so over the years, I have reviewed hundreds of similar online programs like Usborne Books.

In the past week, I have done thorough research about the Usborne Books, so I can tell you everything you need to know about it.

As a disclaimer, I’m not affiliated with Usborne Books, which means I’m not paid to write this review for Usborne Books. So you can be sure that my words are unbiased.

In this Usborne Books review, I’m going to cover the following in this review:

What Is Usborne Books?

Usborne Books is an educational book publisher owned by Education Development Corporation (EDC). In addition to that, they offer:

  • Traditional books
  • Sticker books
  • 3D cut out books

They have been in business for over 40 years and have been recognized as one of the 200 best small companies by Forbes Magazine and among the best fast-growing companies by Fortune Magazine.

Who Founded Usborne Books?

In his early career, Peter Usborne focused on the world of children’s books after realizing he would soon become a parent.

In 1973, he founded his own company, Usborne.

With his illustrations for children, he pioneered a new line of publications, including high-quality books featuring popular and contemporary subjects that were unmatched in the industry.

After nearly 50 years of parenting, Peter Usborne still says being a parent has been the best experience in his life, and writing children’s books has played a major role in that.

He still looks forward to getting up in the morning and going to work. Despite his age, his duties as a publisher and parent have become increasingly intertwined as he runs Usborne Books with his daughter Nicola, who is his Managing Director.

His son, Martin Usborne, has his own publishing company called Hoxton Mini Press.

Peter Usborne manages The Usborne Foundation with his children Martin and Nicola. Founded by the Usborne family, this charity focuses on health and literacy issues using design technology.

Children around the world enjoy a series of games by The Usborne Foundation called “Teach You Monster To Read”.

Is Usborne Books A Pyramid Scheme?

You may wonder if Usborne Books at Home a pyramid scheme like many other multi-level marketing companies?

In order for an MLM company to be considered legitimate and not a pyramid scheme, consultants must be able to generate revenue through public sales as well as by recruiting new members.

Do Usborne books make money when you sell them to the general public?

The general public can purchase these books. Technically, Usborne Books At Home is not a pyramid scheme, but hiring consultants is the key to success.

Can You Make Money With Usborne Books?

As a Usborne Books consultant, you will receive the following benefits for $65:

  • 1-year consultant status
  • ten books
  • 6-month e-business package
  • business supplies

In addition to a 25% commission on all sales you make, you will also receive bonuses for any sales you make above and beyond your quotas as a new consultant. You do not need to meet any sales minimums on a monthly basis.

There are a number of ways to sell these books, but the majority of consultants book parties online using Facebook and host home parties similar to Pampered Chef.

Typically, the consultant would have some books for staging purposes, but the partygoers would order books online through Usborne and have them shipped to them.

Depending on the sales made at the party, the Usborne hostess will provide free gifts as well as reduced-priced books as a way to encourage them to host parties (either in their homes or online).

You can choose from over 20 books in the Fuss Fish Library when a friend hosts your party.

This type of direct sales tactic is used by most MLM companies as a way to get consultants to recruit new consultants by paying a percentage of sales.

How to Be A Successful Usborne Consultant?

Usborne offers hourly consultancy pay, which is ok for a side business, but not earth-shattering.

In addition to consultant books kits without minimums, you can create a library for your child using the 25% consultant discount on books.

The consultants at Usborne are often asked for advice on what new consultants should do. The consensus is to go all in.

Usborne encourages new consultants to get their library and business up and running quickly.

Naturally, when their direct sales businesses experience seasonal fluctuations (like in the summer or before holidays), consultants are instructed to keep their noses to the grindstone.

Usborne consultants are often told to be creative over and over again. With Usborne, you can sell their books in many ways besides just from your home.

Some of the most successful consultants haven’t sold the most books, ironically. They are primarily concerned with building a team of consultants in their downline.

Consultants are generally encouraged to ask for help, run their businesses as businesses, and show their passion for books.

How Much Money Can You Make As An Usborne Consultant?

Usborne’s website indicates that consultants usually earn around $100 per book party. How much does that translate to on an hourly basis?

Consultants earn an average monthly income ranging from $150 to $4,100, but the midpoint is usually around $550.

To reach this level, it typically takes a consultant 18 months to several years with Usborne.

Book parties are usually held at least five times a month, and an average of three hours is spent at each party.

In truth, Usborne consultants earn around $40+ per hour on average and $17.50 per hour on the low end.

As a team lead recruiting consultants, you can expect to make even more money. For building his team of consultants, a consultant claims to earn $600 per hour.

A consultant downline is clearly the most profitable way to build an Usborne business (and all MLM businesses).

As a team lead, you’re paid 25% commission on your sales and a sign up bonus for each consultant you hire.

Furthermore, in addition to your 25% commission, you receive a 25% commission for the team sales.

As a Usborne consultant, you can make quite a bit of money with very little time invested. In order to make big money, however, you should consider making it a career and set some long-term goals beyond just being a side business.

You might as well earn some real money if you’re going to work that hard to hit it big with Usborne, which isn’t easy.

Can You Make Money Selling Usborne Books To School?

Selling books to libraries and schools is one of the incentives of being an Usborne consultant and organizer. Consultants are convinced that this can be a very profitable endeavor.

If you sell to schools, you will receive a commission of only 20%. Although you don’t get the 25% you normally get, that’s still a decent commission. I’m assuming they’re getting more orders.

But first, you must have at least 6 $160+ orders under your belt before you can open a library or school sales account, but we’ve found that consultants find this a little harder than they thought.

Also, even if you can sell to schools and libraries, you will have to deal with competitors (like Book People).

Additionally, these reps can offer bulk orders of Usborne books at a lower price to schools and libraries, even the same Usborne books you sell.

The Usborne retail price for “See Inside Your Body” is $13.60, but schools are able to purchase the book from Book People for $10.87.

Schools can also purchase “Looking After Your Mental Health” for $4-5.50 less than Usborne’s retail price.

To compete with these other companies, you’d need to sell your books for a lower price.

It is likely that your commission would be impacted if they do.

Imagine how much a 20% commission would be on a $4.00 book before you even subtract your own personal costs.

Additionally, Usborne corporate sells its books to schools without consulting with them.

Thus, if you want to sell these books, you have to meet their requirements which will result in you being pigeonholed.

To make a consistent amount of money, you have to jump through a lot of hoops.

Usborne Books Cons and Complaints

1. Hard to Host Parties to Make Sales

Most people find it hard to get more than one party out of a hostess, and even though companies like Scholastic can make a lot of money at book fairs, they can really be a hindrance at schools and libraries.

2. Usborne Books Website Has Technical Issues

Another challenge most consultants face is the technical issues with the Usborne website and the daily setbacks they experience as consultants.

Customer service consultants are irritated when customers want to order a series of books and are told that they’re out of stock or that delivery will be delayed.

Regardless of shipping and website issues, a company should never run out of stock if it keeps track of its sales and inventory for any given line. A consultant like Usborne can be affected by things like this on a daily basis.

Despite the fact that many things have improved since the implementation of the new website, quite a few consultants still complain.

3. Usborne Books Can Be Found Elsewhere At A Lower Price

In the past few years, Randall White, CEO and owner of the United States division of Usborne Books, ended his relationship with Amazon.com because their price point was too low, resulting in independent consultants not being able to compete with Amazon’s ability to sell books for lower prices.

Whenever possible, consumers will buy a product for its lowest price. While you won’t find all selections, you will often find a lower price compared to what the Usborne Consultant sells elsewhere, including Amazon, Ebay, Barnes & Noble, Half Price Books, and other toy and retail shops.

4. Being an Educational Consultant is Very Difficult

One thing is to sell to your friends, family, and blog readers. The process of selling to schools, daycare centers, and libraries is very different.

One of your biggest competitors here is Scholastic Books. Usborne Books and More belongs to Scholastic and you may see Usborne books at Scholastic book fair events.

There are many hoops you have to jump through in order to convince an educational facility to buy from you.

5. Usborne Books is Not Competitive Enough

When surrounded by competitors, a product must stand out to be successful. Children’s books are vibrant, colorful, and provide them with the education they need to develop their brains.

It is also important to remember, whether you like it or not, that this market in general is shrinking.

Also, many publishers offer their books as apps for tablets or as e-books. It is always cheaper to purchase e-books. The child needs to feel and touch items to develop their sensory skills, but consider installing an app that goes along with a book, and watch the character come to life and the child be enthralled.

They offer very few apps for purchase and no e-book format available for any of their books.

6. Earning Potential is Low Unless You Recruit And Build A Downline

The literature indicates that a “good” month for Usborne is $400.00 in sales, one venue event, and one educational event.

A home show can yield less than $100.00. People who live in saturated markets sell their products at book fairs and other events for a lower price.

It is estimated that only 2% of people who join multilevel marketing companies will be successful, meaning, they will get a paycheck every month to pay their bills.

7. You Must Purchase All Marketing Materials

Usborne relies on you to sell their products. You will market their product for them by any means necessary, so they will not have to hire a marketing agency because you will do it for free.

Flyers must be purchased, which are often out of date, out of print, or out of stock. The minute out-of-print books are published for distribution, catalogs list them for sale, and you’ll have to check the lists weekly for out-of-stock items.

By the end of six months, your personal catalog will show more items that aren’t available than those that are. You must adhere to their branding guidelines or you will get slapped on the wrist.

Is Usborne Books Worth It?

As a Team Leader, you will receive an advancement bonus of $120 and if you can achieve this in 4 months you will receive a double bonus of $240.

When that happens, you’ll receive the “Personal Team Bonus,” which is a 5% commission every month on all of your team’s sales as long as:

  • Achieve a monthly sales quota of $120
  • Your team’s total monthly sales are $1,800.
  • There are four active Organizers who make at least $120 in sales one out of every three months.

What would all this mean for you financially if we ran some numbers:

  • You make $22.80 from one party of $120
  • You’ll earn $90 commission on team sales
  • If 4 of your team members sell $120, you will make $28.80.

What would be your total income?

You’ll gross about $238.80.

Imagine how much money you make by selling over $1,800 in Usborne books by pushing yourself and your team. Working part time at minimum wage would only require you to work 6 hours a week.

This doesn’t seem like a whole lot of money to me when you consider how much time you have to spend on your “business”.

Moreover, in order to maintain your rank, you must be paid this for three rolling months.

In MLMs, nearly 99% of participants usually lose money once their business expenses are deducted, according to the FTC.

Do you think it’s worth it?

It is certainly not worth it to use the MLM business model they employ.

What Is The Cost To Join Usborne Books?

The process of joining Usborne is fairly straightforward. There are two consultant kits available.

The first one costs $65 and the second costs $125.

Each kit comes with a 6-month online business package, an awesome branded box, catalogs, business supplies, and books. It’s the number of books that separates the $65 kit from the $125 kit.

Is Usborne Books a Scam?

I cannot say Usborne Books is a scam when it comes to making money.

It’s one of those make money online programs based on selling children’s book memberships that supposedly make you money by holding home parties and buying products at wholesale prices.

However, the problem is that it’s not possible to build long-term wealth on a simple 25% commission.

The Usborne Books do contain some very helpful information on how to make money online and land some big commission checks.

If you ask me, it’s a bit outdated.

There are many better alternatives to make money, which I will tell you at the end of this review.

This is not a sustainable and easy way to generate a decent income. I will tell you a way to make money online that is passive and legitimate at the same time.

Usborne Books Review FAQs

1. Are Usborne Books Any Good?

The books are fantastic.

But if you compare Usborne books with similar titles you can purchase more inexpensively from other companies, I’m sure you’ll notice the difference in price right away.

2. Is Usborne Book And More A Direct Sales Company?

Certainly. It distributes its books through Direct Sales (also known as Network Marketing) via thousands of consultants in the US and abroad.

3. Is Usborne Books A Great Way To Work At Home?

With Usborne Books, you can make money from home, but not much. To set up presentations, you need to put in the time, but it is possible.

I don’t think Usborne Books is a great way to make money from home. There are many better alternatives such as building an affiliate marketing business online using a blog.
