What is Udemy?

Students and professionals can learn online with Udemy. In addition to its 50 million students, Udemy has 57,000 instructors teaching courses in 65 languages.

Over 100,000 online courses are available through the company’s Android and iOS apps on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. Every course purchase includes lifetime access to the classes, so users can study at any time.

Udemy’s most popular course categories include:

  • Development
  • Business
  • IT and software
  • Design
  • Marketing
  • Personal development
  • Photography
  • Music

Answer a few quick questions about what topics you’re interested in, and how familiar you are with specific subjects, to receive personalized course recommendations.

Videos, audios, and texts are used in Udemy courses. Platform-specific features, such as quizzes, closed captions, bookmarks, and instructor announcements, are available.

You receive a certificate of completion after completing a Udemy course. Due to Udemy’s status as an unaccredited institution, the certificate demonstrates your skills and achievements only to your employer, family, and friends.

Employee learning is popular through Udemy for Business. With Udemy for Business, every client has unlimited access to the 4,000 most popular courses and fresh content from more than 1,500 experts and practitioners.

What are the Features of Udemy?

Functionality and technical features

Udemy’s technical features make up a cluster of important features. Udemy’s video player and downloadable content are of high quality and easy to use.

There is little risk of them crashing (I have never had an experience with it or seen complaints about it in reviews) and they are easy to download and use.

You’ll also get lifetime access to a course when you purchase it. The downloadable content will be available to you again and again.

Users can access Udemy through web browsers as well as iOS and Android devices. Computers, smartphones, and other devices can all be used to take classes.

Learning Certificate of Completion

There are some courses on Udemy that come with certificates of completion, but not all. A certificate of completion will be given to you once you complete the class.

You can then add it to your physical or virtual portfolio. Depending on the type of class you are taking and why, this may or may not be useful.

The ability to test drive

You may have to select an online course based on your gut feeling and the course’s advertising alone on some online course platforms. The only real way to know if a course is right for you is to take it.

It’s not the case with Udemy – you can preview a course before signing up. If you don’t like a course, you can return it within 30 days as long as you haven’t viewed the lion’s share of the content.

Course Features

Our courses include standard features that you’ll come to love. You’ll have access to audio lectures, text lectures, and video lectures in each course. If the instructor added subtitles to the class, most classes come with quizzes.

Additional resources and certificates of completion may also be included. Many of them also allow you to take notes, post reviews, and read and answer questions.

What’s Inside the Udemy Platform?

Udemy offers a wide range of content. If you explore the content broadly, you will find 13 categories: development, business, finance and accounting, IT and software, office productivity, personal development, design, marketing, lifestyle, photography, fitness, and music. There are subcategories within each category.

I had access to six courses in the first round of testing, most of which covered professional development topics, including embracing a culture of feedback, public speaking, and uncovering unconscious bias. A beginner Photoshop CC class was given to me as well as one on software skills.

I signed up for business subscriptions for classes on diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as some free courses for follow-up testing and review.

Despite being the core of the Team and Enterprise memberships, the hard and soft skills covered are not the only topics. You are likely to find something else on Udemy if you come looking for it.

The training is likely to be discovered elsewhere, such as on the instructor’s own website or through a social media account, and linked to Udemy from there.

Are there any other things you can learn? Courses are available in cinematography, macroeconomics, woodworking, sourdough bread making, and publishing children’s picture books.

On Udemy, you can find classes on CPR for pets ($19.99), gold prospecting ($24.99), and psychic development for beginners ($159.99).

What Types Of Courses Are Available On Udemy?

On the Udemy platform, there are a wide variety of courses available. There are 15 major categories, along with up to 15 subcategories under each major category.

There is a subcategory of “instruments” within the “Music” category. Here, you will find a variety of lessons for piano students, guitar students, harmonica students, banjo students, saxophone students, etc.

Udemy offers the following categories:

  • Development
  • Business
  • Finance and Accounting
  • IT and Software
  • Office Productivity
  • Personal Development
  • Design
  • Marketing
  • Lifestyle
  • Photography and Video
  • Health and Fitness

How Do You Choose Udemy Courses?

Although you have a wide range of options available to you, finding the right Udemy course for your needs and preferences can be tricky. Choosing a class can be overwhelming due to the sheer number of options available.

Visit Udemy’s homepage to get started. Browse the categories above to find the courses you need or search by keyword. Mark the ones you want to buy as shortlisted, and then add them to your cart. Purchase the courses when you’re ready. It’s that simple!

If you aren’t sure which class is right for you, you can also preview it. This is done by clicking on the class icon or title, then clicking “preview this course” on the right-hand side.

Make sure you read the course objectives and reviews before choosing a course. In this way, you can determine whether a course will help you reach your goals, or if you should pass.

Does Udemy Offer Money Back Guarantee?

Udemy offers a generous money-back guarantee. Within 30 days after purchasing a course, you may receive a refund if you decide not to take it (or are unhappy with it in any other way). The course must not have been consumed or downloaded in its entirety for you to qualify.

Additionally, you cannot request multiple refunds for the same course.

Also note that Udemy will refuse a refund if a student requests excessive amounts of refunds on a regular basis.

What are the Community Features and Interaction on Udemy?

Additional resources, such as worksheets, can be downloaded from the right-hand sidebar of a lesson. Instructors often refer to these materials during lectures.

There are a few tabs below the video player where students can interact. Similarly to the detailed description of the course you see before signing up, there is an Overview.

The Q&A section allows learners to ask questions. If you want to make a question more prominent, you can vote it up. With notes, you can take notes that relate to specific points in the videos.

Additionally, the Announcements section allows the instructor to announce new courses, as well as live, interactive events for students.

Courses vary in the amount of community interaction. It is always optional for instructors to assign a Q&A assignment. Some instructors receive multiple questions each day. When students are asked to share their work visually, the site allows them to upload images with questions.

Similar features are available in Skillshare. Students are able to interact in some classes. Many interior design courses required students to show before and after pictures of their redesigned spaces or to upload working designs that others could critique.

What are the Pros of Udemy?

Ease of Access

Let’s start by talking about Udemy’s ease of use. Udemy is a surprisingly easy to use online learning platform compared to the other options out there.

Although you may not have much experience with computers or online classes, the interface is clear and easy to use.

Udemy’s homepage is quite simple with a simple promotional banner, a list of classes, and a few user reviews. It’s a good option for those learners who want a more basic approach to education, since it’s not cluttered and overwhelming.

Moreover, it’s easy to find courses that might be of interest to you. The search bar allows you to either select a category and subcategory or type in your own keywords.

Once you choose a course, you’ll notice that there aren’t many differences between them. The layout and format are similar so once you’ve taken a class or two, you’ll quickly become familiar with the platform.

You will generally find a preview video, a description of the course and its requirements, and user reviews on most pages.

Purchasing the course is simple. The checkout process is straightforward. Just add the course to your cart, sign in, select a payment method, and you’re ready to learn. There are no complicated steps involved.

Quality Courses

Udemy offers thousands of quality courses, another major benefit. While there are hundreds of instructors on Udemy (and the quality of their lessons can vary a bit depending on which teacher you choose), most are talented and their lessons are worth every penny.

Taking a class with every single instructor on the platform would be impossible, but, in general, Udemy boasts talented teachers who really know their stuff.

Built-In Payment Processing

Both instructors and students will find this feature useful. Paying for a course isn’t complicated, and instructors don’t have to have separate PayPal or Stripe accounts. Neither platform fees nor transaction fees apply to instructors.

What are the Cons and Complaints of Udemy?

Feedback is lacking

Complaints about Udemy’s communication platform are common. Instructors rarely respond to students’ questions while they are teaching a course, although you can ask them questions.

This is a complaint made by many Udemy students, causing you to choose between Udemy or another platform that is more responsive.

Instructors aren’t the only ones who lack communication skills. Udemy staff aren’t the most helpful when it comes to responding to questions.

Pricing is confusing

The pricing model of Udemy is also confusing. Instructors determine the price of their courses, not Udemy. All prices are therefore determined by the people who create the courses, so there can be quite a bit of variation between classes (and it does not necessarily indicate the quality of the class).

However, both Udemy and its instructors can create promotions with discounted price tags. It could be either party that is responsible for a course that is on sale.

Remember that free courses don’t necessarily mean they’re low-quality when you’re deciding which classes to take. There could be a special, limited-time promotion or the teacher is simply trying to make a name for themselves.

It is generally the case, though, that the more expensive courses are taught by credentialed experts, or that the courses are longer in duration.

Insufficient credit

You will not receive course credit when you take a class on Udemy. Almost all courses are for beginners without much experience, and expertise is definitely a matter of opinion – there is no uniform credentialing standard, nor is there an accrediting agency to hold instructors accountable.

Due to this, when you take a class on Udemy, you shouldn’t expect to be able to transfer it to a college program (or anything of the sort).

Who Is Udemy for?

Udemy offers a variety of different skills – but computer and design based skills are excellent.

Those who wish to learn a single skill at a time will find Udemy particularly useful. With their pay-as-you-go model, there is no need to bite the bullet on a subscription. Each course is purchased separately. To learn the skills you need, you can decide how much you want to spend.

You can also use it to find out what course is best for you if you are willing to do some research. Due to the fact that Udemy’s courses aren’t curated by the platform, but rather uploaded by 3rd parties, their quality can vary. Udemy offers a lot of courses you can learn from if you do your research.

Udemy is no different. Timing your purchases around the sales will benefit you greatly. When you time it right, you can get Udemy courses for as low as 90% off. Getting the best deal is as simple as doing a little research.

Remember the teachers, too! If you want to make some extra money by hosting an online course, Udemy is a great option. Referral codes are provided by them to people who register with them, so you can earn even more money.

You can definitely make money off of it as a side hustle, since 70,000 teachers use the platform.

Udemy Course Pricing and Discounts

Price ranges are quite wide, with some courses starting at $11.99 and others going up to $199.99.

Udemy courses are all one-time payments, and students are given lifetime access, so they can return to them as many times as they wish.

Courses with more information, harder subjects, and longer run times are generally more expensive. The instructors are responsible for setting the prices, not Udemy. Instructor reputation can also affect the cost.

Udemy offers a large number of discounted courses once you have an account and are signed in. There are some courses originally priced at $194.99 that are now only $13.99. The company’s courses are always on sale for 90%-95% off the original price.

Udemy’s marketing strategy includes heavily discounted courses, so why do they do that?

Rather than offering higher-priced courses with fewer students, their pricing model offers a wide range of courses for lower prices so that millions of students enroll.

Essentially, it’s a simple pricing model – low price for many versus high price for few. The cost of Udemy courses is lower since the company does not offer accredited certificates.

You can find close to 600 free courses on Udemy on topics like WordPress, Personal Productivity, Meditation and many more if you’re on a budget. You can learn a new topic for free while testing your interest and ability.

A course can be refunded within 30 days if you are not satisfied with it for whatever reason. Refunds are usually issued using the original payment method (e.g. credit card) and arrive in your bank account within 5-10 business days.

You and your team may benefit from ‘Udemy for Business’ if you are looking for something to help your employees. The program helps teams of 5-20 improve their skills in business, technology, design, and more.

How Do You Open A Udemy Account?

It is really easy to register for Udemy. Their platform has a user-friendly design and is easy to navigate. This is how the registration process looks:

  1. Open a browser and visit www.udemy.com
  2. Click the Sign Up button in the upper right corner
  3. Add your full name, email address, and create a password
  4. A confirmation email will be sent to you

As soon as you are logged in, you can click on Categories to explore the different courses available.

If you select a category, you can select one of the subcategories, which will take you to all the courses under that category. You can then begin to read about each course individually.

How To Review and Choose an Udemy Course?

Udemy Filters

Using the filter system can be very helpful and useful. Once you’ve chosen a Category, such as Development, you are able to browse the courses, and that’s where the filter comes in handy.

Multiple filters are available, which include Ratings, Video Duration, Topics, Subcategories, Levels, Languages, Prices, Features and Subtitles.

You can use these filters to narrow down your search and find what you’re looking for. You can choose between Quizzes and Practice Tests, which I found to be pretty helpful.

Review the course content and profile

On the course content page, you can see which lectures are included and how long each video is.

The course overview shows how the different modules are organized and gives you a comprehensive look at the course.

Read reviews at Udemy

Review and rate each Udemy course in the student feedback section to see what other students think about it. The review system also allows you to search for specific keywords within the Search reviews box (e.g. ‘responsive instructor’).

Additionally, you can choose between Five and One stars when rating.

View the instructor’s profile

Each course contains a bio of the instructor. There is a brief blurb about the instructor, their prior experience, feedback from other students, and a brief description of the courses they teach.

You can find out more about who will teach the course this way, and some may even be willing to let you contact them personally if you have particular questions.

Teaching assistants can also help instructors with course materials and answer students’ questions. Although a teaching assistant profile does not appear in the course, these experts are also knowledgeable about the course’s subject.

When did the course launch

Udemy courses should be regularly updated, and you’ll find the last time it was updated in the course header.

Learning a new software application, such as a program in the Adobe Suite, is particularly important since you will want to learn the latest version of the software.

The quality of the course preview

The course can also be viewed before purchasing, which is a great feature.

In my opinion, this is one of the best ways to get an idea of what the course is all about. You can see what the course preview looks like, and it’s a nice way to get a sense of what you’re going to learn.

Your budget

Since most of Udemy’s courses are heavily discounted, its courses really are affordable for most. Taking a financial perspective, you shouldn’t be out of pocket.

The best tip is to list the courses from lowest to highest price if you are on a tight budget. You can also find many free courses.

  • Learning on the go is possible.
  • You will have lifetime access to your courses.
  • Business training solutions are great.
  • Engaging with the instructors.

Will Udemy Help Me With My Career?

A Udemy course is ideal if you are looking to learn or improve your personal development or if you want to change careers.

You can use it to qualify for a job if you lack the necessary skills or even be promoted.

If you complete a paid Udemy course, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion that you can share with coworkers and potential employers. A certificate shows the skills you’ve acquired and what you’ve accomplished.

You will not be able to provide an employer with an official certificate since Udemy is not an accredited institution.

Is Udemy a Scam or Legit Platform?

I am often asked: Is Udemy legitimate?

When a course costs less than $20, it’s common to think that Udemy is a scam.

To put your mind at ease, Udemy was launched in 2010 and its headquarters are located in San Francisco with satellite offices all over the world, so it’s an established company.

More than 295 million students have enrolled in online courses, and there are over 42,000 instructors.

With Udemy, everyday experts can create courses on topics that they are passionate about as part of a growing movement called Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC).

Since Udemy’s marketplace model attracts thousands of instructors, it means that new courses are added constantly and updated frequently.

In terms of the quality of Udemy courses, you really need to think about why you are taking the course.

The course can prove something on a more professional level (e.g. an official certification) if you wish to use it for your own personal development.

I just wanted to clarify that Udemy is legit and it’s safe, you won’t be scammed.

What I Like About Udemy

In my opinion, Udemy has several big pros.

Despite its shortcomings, it has a lot going for it.

First of all, the courses are diverse. As many online courses are available on as many subjects as any other online learning platform.

From dog training to makeup application to video editing, you can find good courses online.

My personal opinion is that Udemy is the best place to take courses for hobbies.

I also like the course software. Navigation and the lesson player are intuitive and smooth. I’ve never had a problem or couldn’t find what I was looking for.

You can also take courses at your own pace. edX, for example, requires you to wait for an enrollment period if you’d like to take a specific course. There is no rush or deadline to complete the course on Udemy, and you have lifetime access to it.

What I Don’t Like About Udemy

The platform definitely has some issues, as I stated from the beginning. I have three main concerns with Udemy.

Misleading review systems are the biggest problem.

A course with a rating of 4.8 out of 5 must be a great course, right? Sometimes, yes, sometimes no.

It has to do with the extreme discounts. The creators of new courses often offer their courses on sale for 90%+ or even give them as gifts to early students.

There’s a problem with that. Because I would have very different expectations if I paid $200 for a product than if I paid $10.

However, even when it comes to highly rated courses, I have not always found that reviews are accurate.

Another major problem is the fact that anyone can teach, resulting in many low-quality courses. While most instructors have good intentions, they may instruct inaccurately because they aren’t experts in their fields.

In addition, this results in a wide range of video and audio quality. Sometimes, it’s good, sometimes it’s bad.

After a course receives a few hundred positive reviews, it will remain at the top of its category. Several category pages contain courses that were created years ago and are at least partially outdated.

It isn’t always possible to update courses. It may have been deserved in the past, but not now.

How to Publish a Course at Udemy?

It is possible to take a course on Udemy as well as to be a course instructor, which is a very useful feature (or quite the opposite).

Udemy instructors tend to be professionals who are experts in their fields, but that can’t be guaranteed since anyone can join.

You should prepare your Udemy course in the following ways if you plan to become an instructor:

1. Choose your topic

Anything can be taught. You can identify topics that are in demand and create relevant courses with Udemy’s help.

2. Identify your target audience

Consider who the course is intended for. You can then identify the learning objectives and design the right course for your audience.

3. Determine your learning objectives and course structure

Creating a well-structured course begins with deciding what the course objectives are.

The Udemy team will evaluate and provide feedback once your course has gone through the quality review process. Then your course is ready to be published on Udemy.

What are the Pros and Cons of Udemy For Instructors?

Consider these pros and cons before publishing a course on Udemy.

  • Publishing your course is free of charge. In fact, it is completely free.
  • Maintaining your course on Udemy does not cost anything
  • Your course will be exposed to a big community of learners since Udemy has more than 50 million users.

  • In order to build a database, you cannot extract the contact information of your learners.
  • There is a high likelihood that your course will be discounted on Udemy if you sign up for one of its courses.
  • The only way to reach out to a representative at Udemy is through the online forum.

Udemy Review: Final Verdict

It is definitely worth checking out Udemy if you are looking to broaden your mind or develop a new skill. It is possible to learn quite a bit for a little amount, as long as you time the pricing correctly.

To get the most value for your money, check the review ratings on each course. You can also share your own expertise by writing your own course if you want to take it further.

I hope the Udemy review was helpful to you, and that now you are able to make a more informed decision about which online learning platform is right for you.

Udemy Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How Much Does Udemy Cost?

Udemy charges users based on the number of courses they take, unlike other platforms (such as LinkedIn Learning and Skillshare) which charge a monthly or annual subscription fee.

Due to this, prices vary. You might pay as little as $3 or as much as $300 for a course. This is at the discretion of Udemy (which deals with promotional deals and sales) and the instructor of the class (who sets the price of the course).

2. Is there a monthly fee for Udemy?

There is no monthly fee for Udemy. Each course is charged separately. Free courses are available as well.

You may purchase Udemy team subscriptions if you are part of a company. The Udemy Team pricing is $240 per year (there are also larger enterprise packages available).

3. Is Udemy Free?

Udemy is generally not free. It charges a fee for the courses it offers. However, some courses are offered for free, and others are sometimes on sale at very low costs (or even for free).

4. Is Udemy Legit?

Mashable and Forbes have both acknowledged Udemy’s legitimacy. On a daily basis, the platform is used by millions of people to learn new skills.

The platform is worth considering, and even though there are sure to be some bad apples (Udemy does not have a process in place to vet its instructors, nor does it require them to be credentialed in any way), for the most part, it is a worthwhile endeavor.

5. Is Udemy Accredited?

The Udemy platform is not accredited. Even though Udemy offers certificates of completion, which can help you showcase your achievements and accomplishments to potential employers, the platform is not accredited.

Udemy certificates cannot be used to obtain university course credit or for any other similar purpose.

6. Are Udemy Courses Worth it?

A Udemy course is well worth the time it takes to complete if you are interested in a particular subject and can dedicate yourself to it.

Among all the affordable (and sometimes even free) courses available on Udemy, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for.

You can also show a potential employer that you are committed to professional development by taking a Udemy course in your spare time.

7. How long do Udemy courses last?

You can rest assured that after purchasing a Udemy course, you will always have access to it. There are no expiration dates for Udemy courses, so you will always be able to access them.

8. How Do You Buy a Course on Udemy?

You can purchase a course on Udemy in several different ways. Payment options supported by Udemy include Discover, MasterCard, Visa, and American Express. PayPal is also available.

Students from several different countries (generally from Latin America, Asia, and Europe) can also pay with cash or bank transfer. Depending on what kind of device you have, you can also use the mobile app to pay. The app uses the Google Play and Apple payment systems.

On the landing page for the course, click “Buy Now” to enroll. All of these payment methods will be displayed on the checkout page. It’s that simple!

9. Is Udemy a Good Way to Get a Job?

While Udemy is not accredited, the courses you take on the platform won’t necessarily translate into college credit, but improving your skills is one of the best ways to improve your chances of landing a job.

How? Having the right skills can help you qualify for a job you want and get promoted to a more senior position. For those who lack the time, money, or energy to pursue traditional training and education, Udemy is a great option.

Also, there are many fields and skills that are new and developing that do not necessarily have degrees associated with them – you will have to learn them yourself. A website like Udemy can help you with that.
