Early Life and Family
Tracy Nelson was born into a famous showbiz family on October 25, 1963, in Santa Monica, California. Nelson was the oldest of four children born to Ricky Nelson, a singer, songwriter, and actor, and his wife, actress Kristin Harmon. Her paternal grandparents were the well-known singing and acting couple Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, and her maternal grandparents were football player and sportscaster Tom Harmon and actress Elyse Knox.
Tracy’s generation carried on the family performing tradition. Her younger brothers, Matthew and Gunnar, formed the band Nelson, and her youngest brother, Sam, became a musician and music executive. Tracy Nelson was also bitten by the acting bug at a young age, appearing opposite Lucille Ball in Henry Fonda’s Yours, Mine, and Ours before her fifth birthday.
Nelson’s parents married in a large Catholic ceremony in April 1963 in front of 400 guests. Ricky and Kristin’s marriage was rocky, with both accusing the other of affairs and substance abuse. Nelson fought frequently with her mother and spent her adolescence at her father’s house. In 1982, her parents divorced.
Nelson briefly attended Bard College after graduating from Los Angeles’ Westlake School for Girls in 1981. She left after being cast opposite Parker in the sitcom Square Pegs in 1982. Jennifer DiNuccio, the snooty, popular Valley Girl character, was a fan favorite. Nelson later appeared as a guest star on shows like St. Elsewhere, Family Ties, and The Love Boat in the 1980s. She was also in the film Down and Out in Beverly Hills.
Personal Tragedy and Cancer Diagnosis
Tragedy struck the Nelson family on December 31, 1985, when Ricky Nelson was killed in a plane crash. The accident, which occurred in De Kalb, Texas, also killed Nelson’s girlfriend and bandmates. Two years later, at the age of 23, Nelson married actor Billy Moses from the popular soap opera Falcon Crest. Shortly after her wedding, Nelson began to feel weak and ill. As a result, she had a dream in which, she later recalled, “my father called me and said, ‘I know you miss me, but it’s not time for you to die yet. You need to see a doctor.'”
A biopsy in December 1987 revealed a malignant, grapefruit-sized tumor in her breast. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer. She blamed the disease on the stress of her father’s death and an ugly family dispute between her mother and uncle over custody of her youngest brother.
To make matters worse, her husband’s father was diagnosed with inoperable throat cancer at the same time. Nelson underwent a seven-hour surgery to remove parts of her liver and lymph nodes, and then endured months of grueling chemotherapy that dropped her weight to 87 pounds. Within six months of her diagnosis, the cancer went into remission.
Through it all, Nelson kept working. During her illness and treatment, she played the role of Sister Stephanie “Steve” Oskowski on the series Father Dowling Mysteries and made guest appearances on television series such as Perry Mason and Melrose Place. Despite fears that radiation treatment may have rendered her infertile, Nelson gave birth to a daughter in August 1992, who was named Remington.
Nelson and her husband, Billy Moses, divorced in 1997 and have joint custody of their daughter. Nelson had a second child, Elijah Nelson Clark, with boyfriend Chris Clark in 2001. Nelson is determined to be a better person as a result of the numerous challenges she has faced in her life. “Everything happens for a reason,” she says, “and I believe I was given the opportunity to grow as a person.”
