The Untethered Soul Book Summary
Lesson 1: Life without fear is impossible. To conquer your fears, you must first let them go.
As unfortunate as it may be, the human mind is naturally inclined to dwell on the worst possible outcomes. When we focus on our enemies, our chances of survival increase.
This character flaw has caused us to be hyper-aware of feelings of worry and fear. How can I get rid of my fears and live a more worry-free life?
There is a part of your mind that is occupied by fear. Recognize its existence and let it go, or run away from it.
Realizing that your worst fears are nothing more than mental constructs can be a major mental hurdle. As a result, many of us choose to ignore them. To further shield ourselves from fear, we actively work to shape our lives in ways that minimize the occurrence of potentially frightening situations.
Think of the pain caused by a splinter in your finger. The slightest touch causes pain. If you trip over it at night, you may have trouble falling asleep.
You can either change your actions and movements so that the splinter never touches anything, or you can physically remove it.
Losing your fear is like removing a splinter: you just have to work at it. Realize that your fear is not really a part of you, but something external that you need to overcome.
A lack of free flow of vital life force is the root of fear. When your vital life force is stagnant, you are unable to connect with your heart. A fragile heart is easily overwhelmed by fear.
Fearlessness is not a necessary component of enlightenment; to assume otherwise would be unrealistic. You must acknowledge your fear and at the same time choose to ignore it.
Lesson 2: Increased enlightenment allows one to shed the constraints of one’s individuality.
Spiritual development is facilitated by releasing attachment to one’s thoughts and emotions. Ignoring one’s own feelings and thoughts would be fantastic, wouldn’t it?
Isn’t it wonderful to think that you might be able to transcend such limitations?
Consciousness is inseparable from the self that you have created through your thoughts and emotions over time. To put it another way, you may as well consider your own identity to be an impenetrable fortress.
You might feel sorry for the animals in the zoo because of the cramped conditions they’re forced to live in. To some extent, you are a prisoner as well, imprisoned by your own thoughts and feelings.
When our sense of identity is threatened, we put up mental walls to keep the danger out.
To increase your awareness, you must release your thoughts.
How frequently do you become so engrossed in a film that you forget about everything else going on in the real world? Your mind is no different. The environment is quieted down so the software can focus on what you’re thinking. Among Buddhists, this is known as clinging. Holding on to it will only serve to confine you.
Your awareness will gain a new appreciation for its independence once it stops trying to hold on to the ideas, sensations, and emotions that pass through it.
If you let your mind wander freely, your awareness will grow. Negative thoughts will not harm you; they will simply pass. As a result, you reach new heights of self-realization.
Lesson 3: Considering our own mortality teaches us to value the things that truly matter.
Humans, myth has it, are the only animals to realize they will eventually expire.
Humans have always had trouble grasping this idea. Although death is unsettling, it ultimately provides us with purpose. If today were your last, how would you want to live?
Death has always been viewed favorably by yogis and saints. Death, where is thy sting? says St. Paul. Where is your triumph, tomb?
Realizing your own mortality can give your relationships deeper meaning.
Your envy could be justified. At the party, you overhear your wife talking to another man, and your jealousy begins to boil over. Think about the aftermath of a temporary demise. Can you see yourself being her sole provider?
When you consider that you may soon be leaving this world, you realize that the happiness of your wife is the single most important thing in your life. She may have been talking to another man, but that is no reason to ruin your evening or start a fight.
Thinking about your own mortality can also help you focus on what matters most. Think about all the things you do in a day and how much time and effort they require. Think about it like this: you know you’re going to die in a week. Just how would that change you? What plans do you have for your final hours?
For what reason are you not performing these actions at this time? Why are you hesitating?
Avoid being distracted by meaningless concerns. Do it now if it’s so important that you want to finish it before you die.
Lesson 4: Achieving enlightenment requires a Tao, or middle way, between two extremes.
There are many different causes of failed New Year’s resolutions. Sometimes this happens when people fail to find a happy medium between their ideals and their actual capabilities.
The Tao Te Ching, one of the world’s most influential spiritual texts, teaches that there is an optimal middle ground between two extremes.
Let’s pretend you’re in a committed relationship and you both want to be together 24/7. It makes you want to do anything and everything with them. Could this possibly turn into something serious?
Now think about the opposite case. Self-sufficiency, a place of one’s own, and excursions abroad are things you cherish. It’s been at least a few months, and possibly longer, since you two last saw each other. How’s the status of your relationship doing at the moment?
If either of these extremes happens, your relationship is probably over. You need to find the Tao between you and your partner if you want your relationship to thrive and last.
There is no difference between any two aspects of existence.
If we veer from this center, we drain our vitality. Let’s say you have a goal of getting from A to B. If you don’t have a plan and end up getting lost, it’s likely going to take you a long time and leave you exhausted.
Keep to the trail instead. Because you’re able to maintain your high level of energy, you’ll feel more confident. You’ll have more vitality and clarity in your life when you take the correct course of action.
The Untethered Soul Book Review
The Untethered Soul is a great book I’d like to recommend to anyone who is interested in personal development. If you spend some time digesting the ideas, it might make a positive impact on your life.
The thoughts you are aware of do not make up who you are. Become aware of them and let them go. You are only limiting yourself if you allow your mind to fixate on one thought at a time. Learn to control this and you will be healthier, happier and more enlightened than you ever thought possible.
It is impossible to achieve enlightenment unless you first accept your thoughts without judgment, including negative thoughts such as envy and fear. Do not try to suppress your feelings. Instead, accept them and let them pass through you naturally.
