The Power of Your Subconscious Mind Book Summary

Lesson 1: Thoughts manifest as reality.

Beliefs form in the conscious mind and are implanted in the subconscious mind. The universal law of action and reaction ensures that any belief, positive or negative, will elicit a response from the subconscious mind over time. Thoughts received from the conscious mind are not judged by the subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind accepts whatever thought it receives and then emits vibrations that result in experiences that correspond to the thoughts. As a result, paying attention and correcting negative thoughts as soon as possible is critical.

The idea that thought creates reality became popular in 2006, when author Rhonda Byrne released The Secret, her best-selling book about how thoughts draw circumstances into people’s lives. Byrne believes that each thought has its own frequency, which the subconscious mind broadcasts to the universe. The universe then brings people and situations into a person’s life that match that frequency.

To change negative or unwanted situations, it is critical to first identify and correct the thoughts that are responsible for bringing those situations into being in the first place. This is also referred to as the law of attraction. According to this law, everyone possesses the ability to create. Each individual’s transmission has the power to change both individual lives and the larger world.

Lesson 2: The opinions of others have no bearing on a person’s life unless they are subconsciously accepted as true.

People have complete control over the beliefs they accept as true. For example, if a fortune-teller tells a man that he will be cursed in love, he has the option of rejecting that thought. If he believes it, it will become his thought. That thought then creates the reality that corresponds to the fortune words. teller’s Understanding this principle is critical to accepting complete responsibility for achieving healthy, positive outcomes.

Consider Sarah, a young woman who has broken up with her live-in boyfriend and lost her full-time job. She is staying with a friend while she looks for a new place to live and work. She believes her life has fallen apart and is constantly concerned about her situation. Her mother is also concerned about her daughter’s situation and calls frequently.

Sarah, on the other hand, does not find her mother’s calls soothing. They only serve to increase her anxiety. Her mother believes she should not have ended her relationship with her boyfriend before looking for work, saying things like, “It’s going to be impossible to find a place to live without a job” and “You’re getting old and should have stuck it out with your boyfriend.”

Sarah initially listens to her mother, which always results in a meltdown. She believes her mother is correct. Sarah decides not to answer her mother’s phone calls after a few days. She thinks to herself, “It won’t help me to hear about how doomed I am.” Instead, she meditates and realizes that her mother’s words are not gospel in this more peaceful state.

She then begins to say affirmations and pray for a happy, miraculous solution to her housing and work problems. These prayers and affirmations protect her psychologically from her mother’s doomsday predictions. Soon after, Sarah gets a good job that allows her to find a nice place to live on her own. Her experience demonstrates the importance of exercising control over one’s thought process, including deciding which outside opinions to consider.

Lesson 3: Sleep is an important time to use the subconscious mind’s healing abilities.

The subconscious is never at rest because it is in charge of basic bodily functions. Harnessing the power of the subconscious while sleeping can be a productive way to connect with the subconscious’s infinite intelligence and solve problems that the conscious mind cannot. Intentions set before going to bed can direct the subconscious to provide solutions to these problems. Faith and trust in the answers provided by the subconscious are required for wondrous healing powers to be unleashed.

Scientists’ use of the subconscious mind has resulted in numerous scientific breakthroughs. Authors Olivia Fox Cabane and Judah Pollack outline many cases in The Net and the Butterfly: The Art and Practice of Breakthrough Thinking (2017) in which scientists and other innovators have successfully utilized the relationship between the subconscious and conscious minds, which they characterize as the brain’s default network and executive network.

Fox and Cabane begin their book by telling the story of how Einstein came to develop his theory of relativity. Einstein had been working on his theory for ten years and was completely stumped in 1905. He told a friend that he was giving up his quest because he was frustrated. He went home that night, and while resting, with his subconscious active, he came up with the key to his theory of relativity.

He worked feverishly on the equation for the next six weeks, and it is now regarded as one of the greatest contributions to modern science. The key to Einstein’s discovery exemplifies the importance of relying on the subconscious while sleeping. He was able to access his subconscious, which held the answer, when he stopped relying so heavily on his conscious mind to produce the results he desired.

Lesson 4: Health, for better or worse, begins in the mind.

Every human being has the right to health. A state of vital health is consistent with God’s image. Although many people have not been taught to address subconscious beliefs when they are physically ill, physical maladies originate in the mind, not the body. Belief in the healing power of the subconscious is essential for health. After using his power to restore sight to the blind, Jesus says in the Bible, “See that no man knows it.” This is a warning to avoid skeptics whose refusal to believe could stymie the healing process. Jesus’ healing power symbolizes the infinite and limitless healing power that is available to everyone.

Dr. John Sarno, a rehabilitative medicine specialist affiliated with New York University, believes in the link between mental and physical illnesses. Healing Back Pain: The Mind Body Connection (1991), written by Sarno, is a best-selling book that discusses the relationship between psychological stress and physical health.

Sarno claims that addressing underlying psychological stressors such as anxiety can heal chronic pain, including back pain and gastrointestinal conditions. The mainstream medical community did not accept Sarno’s theory that psychological conflict can cause physical ailments. The testimony of thousands of patients who claimed to have been cured by Sarno’s methods, on the other hand, convinced Sarno that the mind-body connection is real.

His suggestions for improving physical health include exposing patients to psychosomatic aspects of physical pain, regular journaling, and therapy. Sarno’s widespread popularity demonstrates the therapeutic value of addressing physical ailments on a mental and emotional level.

Lesson 5: Visualizing the desired outcome in your mind and accepting it as reality will result in its manifestation.

The imagination is essential in manifesting positive desires such as love, abundance, health, and success. Acting as if the outcome has already occurred, visualizing the desired outcome, and experiencing what it is like to, say, receive an award, pay off a large debt, or resolve interpersonal conflict are all necessary steps for manifestation. It is not necessary to know how specific outcomes will come to pass. Worrying about the “how” element, in fact, can stymie manifestation.

Worrying about “how” is a common pitfall described by bestselling author Arielle Ford in her book The Soulmate Secret: Manifest the Love of Your Life Using the Law of Attraction (2009). Ford used the law of attraction principles to attract her soulmate and then wrote about what she discovered.

Ford’s approach to finding lasting love is based on a combination of conscious and subconscious mind practices, such as making lists of desirable qualities in a mate and identifying and correcting any limiting beliefs about love that may exist subconsciously. Nonetheless, she occasionally receives feedback from readers who are overly focused on the action-oriented portion of her program.

They are frustrated because they have been working hard to manifest their soulmate, but nothing has happened. Ford attributes this to their underlying attitudes.

According to Ford, because the subconscious mind is focused on the lack of love, love cannot arrive because it is blocked by worries and frustrations. If there is no vibrational match between thoughts and expectations, the universe cannot deliver love. According to Ford, one must let go of concerns about how a desire will be realized. A more fruitful strategy is to strengthen one’s faith in divine intelligence.

Lesson 6: Gratitude practice promotes positive thinking in the subconscious.

Making absolute statements about a desired reality as if it has already manifested is one way to fill the subconscious with positive, life-affirming thoughts. Cultivating a grateful attitude is a particularly rewarding practice because it brings about numerous blessings and can counteract fearful beliefs. Saying a simple “Thank you” in response to anxiety-inducing beliefs can neutralize the negativity while also affirming faith that the divine intelligence within is working on the best solution to any problem.

Gratitude can be transformative, as writer and entrepreneur Nataly Kogan discovered after adopting a daily gratitude practice. Kogan writes in a 2014 Time article about how a sense of pervasive unhappiness drove her to seek gratitude and appreciation as a way of life.

Kogan grew up in Russia and immigrated to the United States with her family as an adolescent. Her family struggled to reach the United States and spent time in refugee camps before settling in the country. However, life in America was not any easier. It was nerve-racking. Kogan’s family was food stamp dependent and lived in public housing.

She felt like an outsider in social situations. Kogan believed that pursuing the American dream would bring him more happiness. She became successful as the years passed. She went to a good school and worked hard. However, Kogan was perpetually dissatisfied. She soon realized that her pursuit of the American dream was a recipe for misery; she had placed all of her hopes in external markers of success, such as career achievement. She stopped looking for happiness outside of herself once she became more grateful. It is always possible to become happier.

Kogan’s gratitude practice consists of three easy steps. Every day, she writes down three things for which she is grateful. Second, she is more conscious of expressing her appreciation to others, which has resulted in stronger relationships. Finally, she makes time to slow down and appreciate her surroundings.

Overall, Kogan believes that gratitude has changed her life experiences in a profoundly positive way, rather than changing her personality into someone who is overly optimistic. Gratitude makes it easier for her to manage her stress and has brought her closer to her friends and family. She discovers that concentrating her gratitude on smaller moments makes her feel more connected to the universe.

Lesson 7: Relying too heavily on willpower or the conscious mind causes discord and conflict and can prevent manifestation.

One reason that prayers go unanswered is a focus on willpower. A person who is overly determined to bring about desired change actually blocks the desired change. This is due to a lack of faith in the subconscious revealed by the efforts expended. The subconscious does not respond to conscious mind coercion; such coercion indicates the presence of anxiety. Positive change occurs when there is trust in the process and that process feels effortless—and possibly even enjoyable.

Dropping excessive effort was a lesson that New Age thought leader and bestselling author Gabrielle Bernstein relearned in 2014 while looking to buy a home with her husband. They had concentrated their search in Brooklyn, but it felt time-consuming. They kept looking at places they couldn’t afford in neighborhoods they didn’t even want to live in because the housing market was hot.

What was supposed to be a happy occasion was making them unhappy. The negativity resulted in fights, illness, and a complete loss of hope that they would ever find their ideal home. Their frustration reached a peak after viewing yet another place they didn’t want to live in. Bernstein had been speaking and teaching about basic principles of manifestation, including faith, for years at that point.

She paused in the midst of a meltdown and said, “There has to be a better way.” She and her husband prayed to the universe for a creative solution to their housing problems. They both felt better after saying the prayer. Following the peace brought about by prayer, Bernstein had an inspired idea: perhaps they should look at homes upstate. They’d always wanted to live in the country. That concept sparked joy and excitement.

They found four potential homes in a day and had a broker ready to show them the houses they were interested in. Before they even pulled into the driveway, the first place, which they called the Mountain Home, felt right. When they entered, they both agreed they felt at ease.

They closed on the house a few weeks later and were both overjoyed with their decision. Bernstein’s experience demonstrates the importance of remembering to let go of the need to control through willpower, as she and her husband did when they decided to abandon their plans to find the perfect Brooklyn home. Bernstein and her husband decided to tap into the infinite wisdom of the subconscious through prayer, and the results were spectacular and life-affirming.

Lesson 8: Envying the wealth and success of others can stifle achievement and prosperity.

Many people who are struggling financially tend to envy those who are wealthy. Envy can be a significant impediment to wealth creation. Thinking negatively about those who have money contradicts a desire for greater personal abundance.

As therapist Amy Morin explained in a 2017 Forbes article, resenting other people’s success breeds resentment and hostility, which are negative emotions that are incompatible with wealth generation. Morin offers several suggestions for avoiding this self-defeating trap. It’s important to remember that while others may be in a better position in life, focusing on oneself is more important.

Furthermore, it is simply not true that success or wealth is limited to a select few. That flawed thinking can be corrected by reminding oneself that there is enough money to go around. The success of a boss does not imply poverty for those who observe his or her wealth.

In addition, it is impossible to know what another person’s life is like. Maintaining perspective is critical. That perspective should ideally include the recognition that everyone is on their own path. Focusing on personal goals and objectives naturally reduces the urge to compare.

Because comparison breeds envy, staying focused on personal goals is especially important. As Morin’s advice demonstrates, the more people who can avoid jealousy and envy, the more likely they are to receive the abundance they desire.
