She soon realized that her pursuit of the American dream was a recipe for misery; she had placed all of her hopes in external markers of success, such as career achievement. She stopped looking for happiness outside of herself once she became more grateful. It is always possible to become happier.

Kogan’s gratitude practice consists of three easy steps. Every day, she writes down three things for which she is grateful. Second, she is more conscious of expressing her appreciation to others, which has resulted in stronger relationships. Finally, she makes time to slow down and appreciate her surroundings.

Overall, Kogan believes that gratitude has changed her life experiences in a profoundly positive way, rather than changing her personality into someone who is overly optimistic. Gratitude makes it easier for her to manage her stress and has brought her closer to her friends and family. She discovers that concentrating her gratitude on smaller moments makes her feel more connected to the universe.

Lesson 7: Relying too heavily on willpower or the conscious mind causes discord and conflict and can prevent manifestation.

One reason that prayers go unanswered is a focus on willpower. A person who is overly determined to bring about desired change actually blocks the desired change. This is due to a lack of faith in the subconscious revealed by the efforts expended. The subconscious does not respond to conscious mind coercion; such coercion indicates the presence of anxiety. They had concentrated their search in Brooklyn, but it felt time-consuming. They kept looking at places they couldn’t afford in neighborhoods they didn’t even want to live in because the housing market was hot.

Lesson 8: Envying the wealth and success of others can stifle achievement and prosperity.
