Early Life, Education, Family

Taylor Alison Swift was born to Andrea Gardner Swift and Scott Kingsley Swift on December 13, 1989, in Reading, Pennsylvania. Her father was a stockbroker, while her mother was a homemaker who raised Taylor and her younger brother Austin.

She attended the Alvernia Montessori School. Taylor and Austin attended Bible studies, as their parents belonged to the Presbyterian Church.

When she was only 9 months old, her mother put her in the saddle, and from then on, riding became her hobby. She was given her own pony named Ginger. Taylor won several horse races.

After moving to Wyomissing, she participated in Youth Theatre Academy productions and frequently travelled to New York to take acting and singing lessons.

She began playing the guitar after a computer mechanic taught her to play on three strings. She was only twelve years old, but immediately became passionate about country music. She was inspired by Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks.

In high school, she won a national poetry contest with a poem called “Monster in My Closet.” Her gift for poetry helped her write songs. The first song she wrote was “Lucky You.”

Her talent was evident, as was the support of her parents. Her mother spoke with Dan Dymtrow and with his help, the twelve-year-old was cast in Abercrombie & Fitch’s “Rising Stars” campaign and subsequently interviewed by numerous major record labels.

She signed with RCA Records and began flying from Nashville to Pennsylvania before her father transferred to Nashville to support his daughter’s blossoming career. There she attended “Aron Academy” and was home schooled.

Country Music Career

A stellar performance at Nashville’s Bluebird Café helped Swift land a contract with Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Records. Her first single, “Tim McGraw,” was released in 2006, and the song became a top 10 hit on the country charts.

It also appeared on their self-titled debut album in October of that year, which sold more than 5 million copies. Other popular singles soon followed, including “Our Song,” a No. 1 country hit. “Teardrops on My Guitar,” “Picture to Burn” and “Should’ve Said No” were also successful tracks.

Swift also received critical acclaim for her debut. She won the Country Music Association (CMA) Horizon Award and the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Award for Best New Female Vocalist in 2007. Swift next released Sounds of the Season: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection the same year. Her renditions of “Silent Night” and “Santa Baby” were moderate hits on the country charts.

Songs and Albums

In 2012, Taylor Swift showed her fans and critics that she’s not just a country artist with her new album “Red.” The album included various genres such as dance-pop, heartland rock, and dubstep tracks, which were met with great response.

After the release of the critically acclaimed album “1989” in 2014, she became the first woman to have three consecutive albums with more than 1 million copies sold. At the 63rd annual Grammy Awards in 2021, she won the “Album of the Year” award for her album “Folklore,” becoming the first woman in history to win the award three times.

From “Taylor Swift” in 2006 to “Fearless” in 2008, all of her albums have made it into Billboard’s Top 100. Her later albums “Speak Now”, “Red” and “1989” brought her to the top of country-pop music.

Below is a closer look at her best-selling albums:

‘Fearless’

In 2008, Swift was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Artist category and received other awards, including the ACM Female Vocalist of the Year Award. Around the same time, Swift released her next album, Fearless, which reached the top of both the country and pop charts and stayed there for 11 weeks. By the end of the year, Swift was the best-selling female country artist of 2008.

‘Speak Now’ and ‘Red’

Swift soon became an even hotter commodity. Her concert tickets sold out in less than two minutes, and she appeared for the second time in the comedy show Saturday Night Live, this time as both host and musical guest. She also became the youngest artist to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2010 – for Fearless.

That year, Swift released her new album Speak Now, which included the hits “Mean,” “Ours” and “Sparks Fly. The album was a success, landing at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling more than 1 million copies in its first week. It was followed by Red (2012), which included the hit single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and also sold more than 1 million copies in its first week.

‘1989’

With her next work, Swift seemed to move further away from her country roots. She released 1989 in October 2014, and “Shake It Off” proved to be one of the catchiest tracks of the year, reaching the top of the pop charts, after which she immediately released a second single, “Blank Space,” which topped the charts.

In the era of low album sales, “1989” sold more than 1.2 million copies in its first week, making Swift the first artist to surpass the 1 million mark in opening-week sales for three albums.

Swift continued to play with her public persona with the song “Bad Blood,” which features Kendrick Lamar. In the video for the song, which premiered at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards and doubles as a noir action short, she stars as a tough, murderous character named “Catastrophe.” Swift also recruited other celebrities to appear in the video, including Karlie Kloss, Cindy Crawford and Lena Dunham.

In February 2016, Swift opened the 58th annual Grammy Awards with another song from 1989, “Out of the Woods.” Having already won awards for Best Music Video and Best Pop Vocal Album prior to the ceremony, Swift won another Grammy for Album of the Year later in the evening, making music history as the first woman to win the award twice.

In her acceptance speech, which was seen as a sharp criticism of a new song by West in which he claims her fame, Swift made a statement about empowerment. “I want to say to all the young women out there, there are always going to be people who are going to try to undermine your success or take away the credit for your accomplishments or your fame,” she said. “But if you just focus on the work and do not let those people distract you, one day when you achieve your goal, you’ll look around and know that it was you and the people who loved you that got you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”

‘Reputation’

At the end of August 2017, Swift revealed with the image of a snake that she would release her sixth studio album “Reputation” in November. The image of a snake is a reference to Kim Kardashian, who Swift called a “snake” on Twitter in 2016 after Swift denied that she had given West permission to use her name in his song “Famous.”

Swift debuted the first single, “Look What You Made Me Do,” on Aug. 24. In the music video, Swift played characters of all her misrepresentations. The video had more than 19 million views on YouTube within the first day.

A few days before Reputation’s release, scheduled for November 10, the mysterious track list was posted on social media. Swift responded by posting the full list on her Instagram page. Among the 15 songs is a joint effort with Ed Sheeran and rapper Future, titled “End Game. The two later appeared in the video for the song, which was released in January 2018.

Reputation sold 1.05 million copies in the United States in its first four days. This marked the fourth consecutive year that the artist sold more than 1 million copies in the first week, making Reputation the best-selling album of 2017.

The album’s success continued in 2018, selling more than 2 million copies and spawning seven singles. At the end of the year, Reputation was named Favorite Pop/Rock Album at the AMAs and Top Selling Album at the Billboard Music Awards.

‘Lover’

On April 26, 2019, Swift unveiled “ME!” featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco, along with a video showing the duo singing and dancing amid elaborate backdrops and swirling colors. It is the first single from their seventh studio album Lover, from which “You Need to Calm Down” and the title track will also be released as singles in the coming months.

In November, Swift won a whopping six awards at the American Music Awards, including Female Artist of the Year and Female Artist of the Decade. A few weeks later, it was reported that Lover was the only album to sell a million copies in the U.S. in 2019.

Then in February 2020, Swift made headlines again when she released the music video for “The Man,” in which she took aim at the out-of-control behavior of rich, privileged men while wearing a beard and suit.

‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’

On July 23, 2020, Swift announced on Instagram that she will release her eighth studio album, “Folklore.” The 16-track album was released at midnight the next day. On December 10, 2020, Swift again announced that she would release a surprise album titled “Evermore” at midnight.

Folklore” was named Album of the Year at the 2021 Grammys. Swift also made history that year, becoming the only female solo artist to win the award three times.

Scooter Braun and Catalog Ownership

In June 2019, Swift revealed her dismay that her music catalog, from her first six albums to “Reputation,” was sold by her first label to a company owned by Scooter Braun, the manager of artists such as Bieber and Ariana Grande and whom she accused of bullying tactics.

“Scooter robbed me of my life’s work that I could not buy,” she wrote on Tumblr. “Basically my musical legacy is in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.” Shortly before the Aug. 23 release of Lover, Swift confirmed that she would be re-recording her old music in order to regain artistic and financial control over her catalog.

Swift’s catalog was sold again in October 2020 to Shamrock Holdings for about $300 million. “As you know, I have been actively trying to regain ownership of my master recordings for the past year. With that goal in mind, my team has been trying to enter into negotiations with Scooter Braun,” Swift wrote on Twitter.

“Scooter’s team wanted me to sign an ironclad NDA stating that I would never say another word about Scooter Braun unless it was positive before we could even look at BMLG’s financial records (which is always the first step in a purchase of this nature). So I would have to sign a document that would silence me forever before I even had a chance to bid on my own work. My legal counsel said that this was absolutely NOT normal and that they had never seen an NDA like this unless it was to silence a personal injury accuser by paying him off. He would not even give my team a price. Those master recordings were not for sale to me.” Swift went on to say that she is in the process of re-recording her old music.

On February 11, 2021, Swift announced that she will release her first re-recorded song, “Love Story,” at midnight. The song is from her album “Fearless,” and Swift revealed that the entire newly recorded album will be released later in 2021.

‘Cats’ and ‘Miss Americana’

In December 2019, Swift starred in a live-action adaptation of the famous Broadway musical Cats, alongside Jennifer Hudson, James Corden and Rebel Wilson. She also co-wrote the song “Beautiful Ghosts” for the film with Cats creator Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The chart-topping singer was then booked to star in the documentary Miss Americana, which chronicles the making of her recent studio albums and other important events such as her sexual assault trial. Miss Americana premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, before receiving a limited theatrical release and being available on Netflix.

Charity Work

Swift was ranked the highest-paid celebrity under 30 by Forbes magazine in 2012, beating out Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Lady Gaga with an income of $57 million. The following year, the musician shared some of her fortune to help others, funding the $4 million Taylor Swift Education Center at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.

The facility opened with three classrooms, a learning lab and a space for exhibitions for children. In an interview with CMT Hot 20 Countdown, she explained that “music education is really such an important part of my life. My life completely changed when I discovered that I write my own songs and play guitar, and you can’t necessarily learn all that in school because there aren’t enough hours in the day.”

Sexual Assault Trial and Copyright Lawsuit

After the huge success of 1989, Swift took a break from the spotlight. However, she resurfaced in August 2017 when she testified in a trial against David Mueller, a former radio host ( DJ ) whom she had accused of groping her in 2013.

Mueller denied Swift’s allegations and said the incident cost him his job, after which he sued Swift, her mother and a radio station employee in 2015. Swift then sued him for alleged assault, and a jury ruled in her favor in 2017, awarding her $1 in damages as a symbolic gesture.

Swift responded to the verdict in a statement, saying, “I recognize the privilege I enjoy in life, in society, and in my ability to bear the enormous cost of defending myself in a lawsuit like this. My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, in the near future, I will be donating to several organizations that help victims of sexual assault defend themselves.

This year, Swift was also sued when two songwriters claimed she stole the chorus of her song “Playas Gon’ Play” for her hit “Shake It Off.” Although a judge dismissed the case in early 2018 on the grounds that the “allegedly infringed lyrics are short phrases that lack the minimum level of originality and creativity required for copyright protection,” an appeals court revived the suit in October 2019.

Personal Life and Boyfriends

During much of 2008, reports circulated that Swift was dating Joe Jonas of the popular music group The Jonas Brothers. Neither Swift nor Jonas confirmed the relationship. “He’s a great guy, and anyone would be happy to be with him,” Swift said at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. Whatever their relationship was, it seemed to deteriorate when Fearless was released. The song “Forever & Always” is reportedly about Jonas.

Swift was then linked to actor Taylor Lautner, one of the stars of the successful Twilight saga. The two reportedly met while filming Swift’s feature debut Valentine’s Day, which was released in February 2010. Unfortunately, the two didn’t make it to the premiere as a couple, as they broke up in late 2009. Swift then dated Mayer for a brief period that ended in a falling out as she wrote the song “Dear John” about the womanizer.

After that, Swift dated Glee star Cory Monteith and Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010 and Conor Kennedy – the son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in 2012. Towards the end of 2012, she dated another celebrity and began the new year with One Direction’s Harry Styles, but the relationship ended in 2013. In 2015, Swift dated Calvin Harris, a music producer, DJ and singer, but the couple reportedly split in June 2016. Shortly after, Swift began a relationship with actor Tom Hiddleston, but the couple split three months later.

Swift has been dating actor Joe Alwyn since October 2016. The couple met at the 2016 Met Gala and the actor inspired songs like “Gorgeous” and “Call It What You Want” on her album Reputation.
