Taylor Daniel Lautner was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 11, 1992. Makena, his sister, is his only sibling. Lautner started karate at the age of six and won tournaments within a year. Lautner then began training with Mike Chat, a seven-time world karate champion.

In 2004, at the age of 12, Taylor represented the United States in the 12 years and under division in the World Karate Association. During the competition, Lautner won the Junior World Forms and Weapons championship, as well as three gold medals.
