SurveyMonkey Review – Scam or Legit? Exposed!

Are you looking for a SurveyMonkey review? But you may wonder if it is a scam.

More than 6,700 companies use SurveyMonkey for their market research and customer satisfaction analysis, making it one of the most popular online form builders.

It is easy to use and is offered in more than 15 different languages (including French, German, Korean and Japanese). SurveyMonkey offers a large number of tools for data analysis, as well as pre-built forms and a wide range of question types (13 in total).

SurveyMonkey was one of the options I was considering. So I looked into it a little bit and was honestly surprised that so many people said they were a scam.

As a disclaimer, I’m not affiliated with SurveyMonkey. It means I’m not paid to write this review. So you can rest assured that you will get an honest and unbiased review from me.

At the end of this review, I’ll also tell you the best alternative to SurveyMonkey that has enabled me to make a full-time passive income online.

What Is Survey Monkey?

SurveyMonkey is a survey generator that offers users a variety of options for creating and distributing surveys to their target audience.

It’s understandable that you came across our site while searching for information on how to make money with SurveyMonkey or how to make money online in general. Websites that promise to pay you for filling out surveys abound; Survey Junkie, for instance, is just one of dozens of similar-sounding options.

SurveyMonkey is a cloud-based software company that has been around since 1999, when Ryan and Chris Finley founded it.

This SurveyMonkey review is aimed at those who want to create their own surveys.

Even though they’ve “survey” in their name, the information gained from your survey is what’s really valuable, not the survey itself.

On the SurveyMonkey backend, you’ll find a number of premium tools for analyzing survey results. For simple surveys and questions, this may not be necessary, but for more complex surveys, there are tools available to help with things like sample selection and removing bias.

Since SurveyMonkey offers a free trial and a streamlined user interface, I was immediately curious. A risk-free trial is always a safe bet, right?

To be honest, I thought the same thing until I read some of the more detailed reviews of SurveyMonkey. Suddenly the word “scam” kept popping up, which surprised me since they didn’t seem like the type to do that.

SurveyMonkey’s Powerful Tools

You can count on SurveyMonkey to give you plenty of options for data collection and analysis, and the company is constantly adding new tools to better serve its customers.

For e-commerce platforms, SurveyMonkey works well with Shopify; for social media tools, with Hootsuite; for email marketing services, with MailChimp; and with Zapier, you can connect SurveyMonkey to hundreds of apps and automations.

For example, a form submission can trigger the creation of a new customer record in Google Sheets via an automation set up in Zapier.

You can build your forms using tools like Image Choice (to collect input on photos or items) or Net Promoter Score (to see how likely customers are to recommend you to friends), and choose from a large library of professionally worded questions.

You should know that the features available in the free version of SurveyMonkey are somewhat limited (e.g. logic, custom question banks, and payment features).

SurveyMonkey Genius

This artificial intelligence (AI) powered application, developed with the help of survey specialists, can help you streamline your data collection for more effective market research or other purposes. Genius’ AI system will even help you ask the best type of survey (e.g., multiple choice, text box).

Among the many useful tools SurveyMonkey Genius offers is one that scores your survey and suggests areas for improvement, another that predicts your survey’s likelihood of success, and another that helps you create the ideal response options for scale-type questions.

Custom Question Bank

The custom question bank feature is great for collaborative research projects using SurveyMonkey. Having your own team members use the survey questions you prepare makes using this product even more efficient. Your surveys all sound the same and you save time in the process.

QR Survey Codes

Face-to-face interactions with customers can make it difficult to get responses to online surveys. Share a QR Code is a new option in Survey Monkey that makes it easier for customers to access your survey via mobile devices. Invoices, delivery bills, and other shipping documents can all benefit from a QR code to quickly and easily collect customer feedback.

Is SurveyMonkey a Scam or Legit?

SurveyMonkey is a reputable company based in San Mateo, California. The company was founded in 2000 and in 2011 acquired Infinity Box Wufoo, a platform for creating and sharing online surveys.

So this is not a complete scam, where a malicious actor creates a fake website to trick you into handing over your money or personal information.

For the record, I hereby declare that SurveyMonkey is completely legitimate… However, it is obvious that there are problems after reading through hundreds of reviews and complaints.

Despite its name, SurveyMonkey is not a startup company. The company recently filed (in secret) for an IPO with a valuation of $2 billion.

What exactly is actually happening here? People call them a fraud, but why?

They accomplish this in large part through their multi-layered billing and automatic renewal procedures.

It could be that a subscriber’s credit card was charged a recurring monthly amount, even though they only wanted to pay for a single month.

It’s also possible that they overpaid for a certain number of surveys, assuming that was all they would get. … only to find out afterwards that the strategy was not supposed to work that way.

It was not free if they got more than a certain number of responses; they had to pay more.

Just recently, I had an issue with one of my email providers that caused just that.

I assumed that if I paid for a certain number of blog subscribers, I would at least be notified when my readership exceeded that number.

However, that is not the case here. Instead, I was surprised to find that I had to pay for each additional subscriber. The amount was not very high, but it was good that I recognized it right away, otherwise I might have missed it.

Maybe this is a dirty trick.

There was definitely a clause in the fine print that warned me about this type of fee when I first signed up for the plan. Although I know better now, I once thought the idea of reaching 10,000 subscribers was ridiculous.

That’s why I ignored the fine print.

Some of the problems people have with SurveyMonkey are very similar.

It’s not uncommon for someone to pay $1,000 for 1,000 survey responses before realizing that their actual audience is more like $3,000,000. As soon as they submit another response, their credit card is charged a new fee.

If you skim the tiny question mark on SurveyMonkey’s pricing page, you’ll see that this policy is explained.

It is likely that some customers read “1000 responses per month” on the standard $37/month rate and assume that this means that only 1000 responses per month are allowed and that any responses that exceed this threshold will not be detected or reported.

You would think that at least you would be notified of the additional responses and have the option to purchase them if you wanted to.

If you hover over the question mark, you’ll notice that additional responses cost $0.15.

A simple warning that just says “$0.15 for each additional reply” under the “1000 replies per month” notice is not ridiculous in my view.

However, in my opinion, SurveyMonkey is not a scam because there is no disclaimer, just an asterisk indicating that more information can be found elsewhere.

Is this a sneaky strategy? Maybe.

SurveyMonkey Reviews and Complaints

It does not matter who you are. No matter how well you run your business, at some point you are bound to receive some complaints from customers. When things go bad, people may even start talking about fraud.

But if the same problems keep popping up, it’s time to do something about it.

Either you are intentionally deceiving your customers by giving them false information, or you have a management problem. Or you are not making your intentions and rules clear enough to potential customers.

Hundreds of people all complaining about the same thing is hard to explain. as has been said, most of these problems are related to billing.

  • No way to unsubscribe/cancel emails despite numerous requests.
  • Credit card charges WITHOUT permission
  • Changing people’s billing cycles without their knowledge or permission.
  • Poor customer service.

Poor customer service is admittedly a matter of opinion. But the other criticisms are also justified.

Therefore. These claims about SurveyMonkey were not made by me. I am merely passing along information that I have gleaned from various online resources.

Perhaps management is not aware that they are receiving these concerns; if they are not aware, they cannot address them.

The general picture is probably not as bad as it seems, as people are much more inclined to complain than to give positive reviews and feedback.

Although I am convinced of the quality of their product, after reading these reviews I chose not to provide my email address or any other information. I can not say they lost my business because I did not immediately add a survey to my website (and I am not sure I even will).

You may also hear from people talking about receiving SurveyMonkey spam, but I’ll get into that later.

SurveyMonkey Spam

If you believe you’ve received spam from SurveyMonkey, please contact the company.

SurveyMonkey users generally have good intentions when conducting surveys. SurveyMonkey is just a platform that can be used by scammers to get your attention.

SurveyMonkey has a zero-tolerance policy for spam, but it cannot always monitor what its users do with the tool. Therefore, if you’ve received surveys from SurveyMonkey and believe that they’re spam, the company wants to hear from you.

SurveyMonkey Review: Final Verdict

So I did not sign up for SurveyMonkey after all. But since I do product testing on a daily basis, I have a few “burner” emails. And yes, there is a lot of unwanted correspondence clogging up those inboxes.

For that reason, I suggest signing up for the free trial with a second email and account if you are concerned about reviews containing unwanted (and never-ending) SurveyMonkey spam.

To clarify, SurveyMonkey itself is not responsible for sending spam, but an unauthorized third party using SurveyMonkey services is. If this is the case, you need to report it.

And you can always create a real account later if you think that this is the right program for you.

In summary, SurveyMonkey is an excellent platform for developing surveys and accessing tools that let you analyze and make sense of the data provided by these surveys.
