Early Life and Career
Steven Vincent Buscemi was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 13, 1957. Buscemi started acting around the middle of the 1980s, and he has become one of the best character actors working today. From 1980 to 1984, before his career took off, he was a firefighter at Engine Company 55 in New York’s Little Italy neighborhood.
Early Career and Breakthrough Role
His portrayal of the criminal Mr. Pink in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992) put him on the map in Hollywood, and soon after Buscemi seemed to be everywhere. With his thin, reed-like build, pale skin and slightly bulging eyes, he often played a seedy or crazy character. Buscemi became the first choice for many directors. He worked with the Coen brothers on the films Miller’s Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991), The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), Fargo (1996) and The Big Lebowski (1998). And with Robert Rodriguez, Buscemi starred in two of his Spy Kids films.
Buscemi hasn’t just played villains or completely off-the-wall characters. In 2001 he played the unlikely romantic lead in the dramatic comedy Ghost World, based on a graphic novel by Daniel Clowes. That same year, in The Grey Zone, he played one of the Jewish prisoners working in the gas chambers of the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. The film received good reviews for its gritty portrayal of what people would do in impossible situations.
Directorial Debut and ‘Sopranos’
Buscemi has also been on the other side of the camera. Trees Lounge, his first movie as a director, came out in 1996 and was well received. The movie’s script was also written by him. Later, David Chase, who made the award-winning drama The Sopranos (1999–2007), asked him to direct an episode of the show. The result was the third season episode “Pine Barrens,” which was up for an Emmy Award. Buscemi went on to direct a few more episodes of the show after this. In the fifth season, he joined the cast as Tony Blundetto, the cousin of Tony Soprano, who is played by James Gandolfini and is the main character of the show.
In addition to directing The Sopranos, Buscemi has lent his voice to several children’s films, including Monsters, Inc. (2001), Charlotte’s Web (2006), G-Force (2009) and Monsters University (2013). He also began starring in a number of comedies, including I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007), Grown Ups (2010), Hotel Transylvania (2012) and Grown Ups 2 (2013), in which he starred alongside Adam Sandler.
After his time with The Sopranos, Buscemi returned to television in a few different roles. In 2007 he made a guest appearance on The Simpsons (1989-) and the following year he appeared in ER (1994-09). Staying true to his comedic roles, Buscemi also appeared in Portlandia (2011-) and 30 Rock (2006-13). However, he had his biggest role in television after taking the lead in Boardwalk Empire (2010-) as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson. For his work on the series, he was nominated for several Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award.
Wife and Son
Buscemi married artist Jo Andres in 1987, and the couple had a son, Lucian. Andres passed away in 2019.
