Early Years

Colbert was born in Washington, D.C. on May 13, 1964, and grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, as the youngest of 11 children. When Colbert was 10, his father and two of his brothers were killed in a plane crash, which was likely the defining event of his childhood. He became more introverted, seeking solace in books, particularly science fiction and fantasy novels by authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien.

Colbert discovered a way to express himself by acting in several school plays at Charleston’s Episcopal Porter-Gaud School. He later enrolled at Hampden-Sydney College of Virginia with the intention of majoring in philosophy, but he quickly changed his mind and transferred to Northwestern University, where he majored in theater.

Second City to ‘The Daily Show’

Colbert moved to Chicago after graduating from Northwestern in 1986 and took a job in the offices of the Second City comedy troupe. He was asked to join the traveling group two years later, after taking improv classes there. He accepted the offer and traveled for the next two years.

He met Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello at Second City, and together they created and starred in two TV shows: the sketch show Exit 57 (1995-1996) and the spoof of after-school specials Strangers with Candy (1999-2000); a film based on the show was released in 2006.

In 1997, just before Strangers was picked up by Comedy Central, Colbert began appearing as a conservative correspondent on episodes of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, under the guise of a humorless but hilarious persona he had perfected. With Strangers and The Daily Show both on the air, and the latter becoming a huge hit in the early 2000s, Colbert’s career was taking off.

‘The Colbert Report’

The Colbert Report premiered on Comedy Central in the fall of 2005, with Colbert playing a starchy, blustery right-wing host—a parody of the pundits who dominated the talk show airwaves. The show quickly became one of Comedy Central’s most popular, averaging over a million viewers per episode in its first week.

Colbert was the featured speaker at the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, six months after The Colbert Report debuted. With President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush just a few feet away, Colbert launched into an off-color rant that silenced the audience and divided critics—some praised him, while others said he had crossed the line into disrespect. The controversy only fueled his popularity, and The Colbert Report became a Comedy Central powerhouse, winning several Emmys, including Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014.

Colbert published I Am America (and So Can You!) in 2007 and contributed to America (The Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction in 2004. He also co-organized (with Stewart) the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, a gathering in Washington, D.C. that served to both parody events staged by conservative commentator Glenn Beck and the Rev. Al Sharpton and to attempt to start a serious conversation about current issues.

Colbert made his final appearance on The Colbert Report on December 18, 2014. His special guest for the show was his pal “Grimmy,” also known as the Grim Reaper.

‘The Late Show’

Colbert was chosen to replace David Letterman as host of The Late Show in April 2014, after Letterman announced his intention to retire in 2015. “Just being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a career highlight,” Colbert said. “I never imagined I’d be following in his footsteps, even though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.” I’m overjoyed and thankful that CBS chose me. Please excuse me while I go grind a gap in my front teeth.”

After debuting with Colbert on September 8, 2015, The Late Show took some time to find its new voice, but it eventually climbed to the top of the ratings thanks to the host’s deft handling of politically charged humor, especially after President Donald Trump began dominating the news cycle. Colbert was also known for recurring segments like “Big Questions with Even Bigger Stars,” in which he and his guest gazed up at the sky and engaged in absurd philosophical hypotheticals.

After The Late Show’s production was halted in March 2020 due to a coronavirus outbreak, Colbert made headlines by taping monologues from his porch, bathtub, and other areas of his home.

Personal Life

Colbert and Evelyn have been married since 1993.

In 2018, the comedian opened up to Rolling Stone about his anxiety struggles. He used to take medication until he realized that the symptoms went away while he was performing with Second City.

“Creating something kept me from spinning apart like an unweighted flywheel,” he explained to the publication. “I haven’t stopped writing since. Even as a writer, I had to spend some time in front of the camera. I have to deliver.”
