Mary Elizabeth Spacek was born on December 25, 1949, in Quitman, Texas. Spacek, nicknamed Sissy by her two older brothers, was a lively little girl who made her first stage appearance at the age of six, singing and dancing in a local talent show.
After graduating from Quitman High School, where she was crowned homecoming queen, Spacek moved to New York City in 1967, at the age of 17, to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. She lived in New York with her cousin, actor Rip Torn (Torn’s father was Spacek’s uncle), and his wife, actress Geraldine Page. Under the alias “Rainbo,” Spacek released the single “John, You’ve Gone Too Far This Time” in 1968, mocking John Lennon for appearing naked on an album cover with his wife, Yoko Ono. However, her music sales slowed, and “Rainbo” was dropped by her record label.
Spacek later decided to pursue acting full-time, enrolling at the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. She made her feature film debut as a teenager abducted by a white slavery ring in the Lee Marvin thriller Prime Cut, after appearing as an extra in Andy Warhol’s film Trash (1970). In 1973’s Badlands, Spacek played another troubled adolescent character, attracting attention for her role as the girlfriend of a serial killer played by Martin Sheen.
Spacek met her future husband, production designer Jack Fisk, while working on the film. Fisk assisted Spacek in landing her breakthrough role in Brian De Palma’s teen horror classic Carrie in 1974. (Fisk served as the film’s art director.) Real-life prom queen Spacek struck a heart-wrenching, terrifying chord with critics and audiences as an emotionally disturbed, telekinetically gifted teenage girl with a fanatically religious mother (Piper Laurie), earning her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and instant cult status.
Notable Acting Roles
After demonstrating her versatility as an actress in films such as Robert Altman’s Three Women (1977), in which she costarred with Shelley Duvall and Janice Rule, and Heart Beat (1979), in which she costarred with Nick Nolte, Spacek exhibited her considerable talents in the 1980 biopic Coal Miner’s Daughter, about country singer Loretta Lynn. In addition to playing Lynn from the age of 13 to her forties, Spacek insisted on singing all of her songs herself rather than lip-syncing. Her performance earned her universal acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
Following Coal Miner’s Daughter, Spacek chose to star in her husband’s directorial debut, Raggedy Man (1981), as a divorced mother who has a dangerous relationship with a sailor played by Eric Roberts. Spacek received two more Oscar nominations for Best Actress for her next two notable projects, the political drama Missing (1982), costarring Jack Lemmon, and The River (1984), costarring Mel Gibson. She co-starred with Anne Bancroft in ‘night Mother in 1986, and received her fifth Best Actress nomination for her performance as the most eccentric of three sisters in Crimes of the Heart, co-starring Jessica Lange.
Both Spacek and Fisk then took a long break from filmmaking to spend time with their two daughters, Schuyler and Madison, at their Virginia farm, Beau Val. After that, she only took on acting jobs on the side, returning to the screen in 1990 in the civil rights drama The Long Walk Home, co-starring Whoopi Goldberg. The following year, she portrayed the wife of Kevin Costner’s Jim Garrison in Oliver Stone’s controversial film JFK.
A number of high-profile television projects followed, including the HBO films A Private Matter (1994) and If These Walls Could Talk (1996), as well as the TNT film The Good Old Boys (1995), co-starring and directed by her Coal Miner’s Daughter co-star Tommy Lee Jones, for which she received her first Emmy nomination. In the 1995 film adaptation of Truman Capote’s The Grass Harp, she reteamed with another former costar, Laurie.
Spacek gave a strong supporting performance in the dark drama Affliction, co-starring Nolte, in 1997. In the little-seen Blast From the Past, she played the matriarch of a family who spends 30 years underground in a bomb shelter in a rare comedic performance (1999). She appeared in David Lynch’s The Straight Story the same year, playing a woman whose father (Richard Farnsworth) travels a long distance on a lawnmower to see his estranged brother.
For the independent film In the Bedroom, costarring Tom Wilkinson, Spacek received some of her best reviews, numerous critical accolades (including a Golden Globe Award), and her sixth career Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 2001. Spacek and Wilkinson gave two of the year’s most talked-about performances as a Maine couple whose teenage son is murdered by the estranged husband of his older girlfriend (played by Marisa Tomei), and the film received five total Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
