Early Life

Susan Alexandra Weaver was born in New York City on October 8, 1949, and began calling herself Sigourney at the age of 14 after reading F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Weaver grew up in the entertainment industry as the daughter of English actress Elizabeth Inglis and former NBC president Sylvester Weaver.

Despite having a privileged upbringing, Weaver’s formative years were not always easy. She lacked confidence in her own beauty, a trait exacerbated by the fact that she was taller than most of the girls she knew, as well as by her mother, who told her at the age of eight that she was simply “plain” looking. “I figured, if my mother doesn’t think I’m pretty, no one else will,” Weaver once said.

Weaver was referred to a psychiatrist at the age of 13 to address what her parents perceived to be their daughter’s uncommunicative personality. “I never even saw the psychiatrist,” Weaver said. “I was a typical adolescent, and teenagers despise telling their parents anything.”

Weaver attended Stanford University in California after graduating from a private high school in Connecticut. It was at that point that she realized her true ambition was to become an actress. Weaver moved back east to Connecticut after graduating from Stanford with a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature in 1971. She completed the program one year before another actress and new friend, Meryl Streep, in 1974.

Career Breakthroughs

Over the next few years, Sigourney Weaver found steady work in a variety of off-Broadway productions. She also appeared on the short-lived soap, Somerset, and played Woody Allen’s movie date in the now-classic film Annie Hall (1977).

However, it was her performance as the tough Ripley in the 1979 megahit Alien that catapulted Weaver to stardom and provided her with a slew of other film opportunities. Over the next decade, she appeared in a number of successful films, including The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) with Mel Gibson and the hugely successful comedy Ghost Busters (1984).

Weaver reprised her Ripley role in the Alien sequel, Aliens, in 1986, earning her an Academy Award nomination for best actress. Two years later, Weaver received two more Oscar nominations: best actress for her performance in Gorillas in the Mist and best supporting actress for her portrayal of Katharine Parker in Working Girl (both released in 1988).

Weaver’s busy schedule persisted throughout the 1990s. She reunited with Alien series castmates to play Ripley in Aliens 3 (1992), before reprising the role for Alien Resurrection (1997). In 1993, she played a lighter role as a spoof first lady in the comedy Dave, co-starring Kevin Kline. In 1997, they collaborated once more on the indie drama The Ice Storm, a moody portrait of family and suburban life set in the 1970s. In addition, Weaver returned to Broadway in 1996 with Sex and Lounging.

Weaver’s versatility as an actress and willingness to pursue interesting projects have been on display in recent years. She co-starred in M. Night Shyamalan‘s 2004 film The Village. Two years later, she was the face of two independent films: The TV Set and Snow Cake. She collaborated with Aliens director James Cameron on the big-budget hit Avatar in 2009. Weaver has maintained a close connection to the stage, starring in a variety of theatrical performances in addition to her steady film work.

Personal Life

Weaver is married to Jim Simpson, a filmmaker. They have one child, a daughter named Charlotte, born on April 13, 1990.
