Meeting Seigfried

Horn met Siegfried Fischbacher, a steward who performed magic tricks on the side, while working as a waiter on an ocean liner in 1957. Horn volunteered to be Siegfried’s assistant, and the pair soon found themselves working together, upping the ante from making a rabbit disappear to vanishing a cheetah.

They toured Europe for the next five years, playing for pennies on the dollar. They got their big break while performing at a casino in Monte Carlo, where a scout noticed them and invited them to perform in Las Vegas.

Siegfried and Roy went on to combine magic tricks with tiger stunts in Las Vegas for more than 30 years, first as part of a shared show and then as their own. They became active preservationists of rare white tigers and white lions in addition to their hugely popular performances. The couple established a special compound outside of Las Vegas for the breeding, care, and conservation of these animals.

Tiger Attack and Retirement

The show was brought to its knees in October 2003 when a white tiger brutally attacked Horn during a performance, leaving the trainer in critical condition. Following the incident, the show was canceled indefinitely. A year later, Horn was still partially paralyzed, but insisted that the animal was not to blame. He claimed that he passed out on stage and that the 380-pound tiger was only attempting to assist him by dragging him off stage. Horn was walking on his own by September 2005, a miraculous recovery.

Siegfried and Roy reunited for one last performance in February 2009 before announcing their retirement the following year.

Death

Horn died on May 8, 2020, in a Las Vegas hospital from Covid-19 complications.

“Today, the world lost one of magic’s greats, but I lost my best friend,” Siegfried said in a statement. “I knew Roy and I would change the world from the moment we met.” Siegfried could not exist without Roy, and Roy could not exist without Siegfried. Roy had been a fighter his entire life, including in his final days. I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Mountain View Hospital for their valiant efforts against this insidious virus that ultimately took Roy’s life.”
