PyeongChang 2018 and Beijing 2022
White was up against some of the younger competition in PyeongChang as he attempted to become the first snowboarder to win three Olympic gold medals. In the halfpipe final, he faced a formidable opponent when Japan’s Ayumu Hirano landed back-to-back double cork 1440s to take first place with a 95.25 score. However, on his final run, White responded by landing his own back-to-back 1440s, earning a score of 97.75, giving him the win and also marking Team USA’s 100th overall gold in Winter Olympics competition.
Following a dangerous crash in October 2017 that landed him in intensive care for five days and resulted in 62 stitches, White almost didn’t get a chance to compete at the Games, but he recovered in time to make history.
White competed in the 2022 Summer Olympics in Beijing, finishing fourth. He announced during the games that this would be his final competition.
On February 5, 2014, just one day before 29 snowboarders competed in the slopestyle qualifying round at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, White drew media attention by announcing that he would not be competing in the course. White, one of the top contenders for the 2014 Winter Olympics, decided not to compete after consulting with his teammates and calling the new course “intimidating.”
The announcement also came after two snowboarders, Torstein Horgmo and Marika Enne, were injured while practicing on the difficult new course, which was deemed too dangerous. With the remaining three American snowboarders failing to qualify for the slopestyle, the United States was not represented in the event.
Instead, White chose to concentrate on the halfpipe. While competing in the halfpipe event, White was expected to win gold. However, the snowboarder finished lower than expected, finishing fourth for the United States. Russian competitor Iouri Podladtchikov won gold, while Japanese snowboarders Ayumu Hirano and Taku Hiraoka took silver and bronze.
White has largely avoided the big screen, with the exception of a cameo appearance in the 2011 film Friends With Benefits. He did, however, appear as a guest on the animated series American Dad! and co-produced the Disney Channel TV movie Cloud 9.
Shaun Roger White, a professional snowboarder and skateboarder, was born on September 3, 1986, in San Diego, California. White, who was born with a congenital heart defect, underwent two cardiac surgeries before the age of five.
White began skating after accompanying his older brother, Jesse, to the nearby Encinitas YMCA. When he was six, his mother ordered him to slow down by telling him he could only snowboard backwards, or switch, a skill that would help him advance in his career.
Since 2002, White has competed in the Winter X Games, winning eight medals, including the first four-peat by a male athlete in one discipline: slopestyle. He won gold in the men’s halfpipe at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. In 2010, he won another gold medal in the men’s halfpipe at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
White is also a professional skateboarder who was inspired by Tony Hawk, whom he met when he was nine years old. He won the Dew Action Sports Tour’s Right Guard Open in skateboard vert in 2006. He is the only skater who has performed a bodyvarial frontside 540.
He is often referred to as the “Flying Tomato” or Il Pomodoro Volante in Italy, where he is also well-known. At the age of seven, White signed his first sponsorship with Burton snowboards.
Throughout his career, he has had a long list of sponsors, including T-Mobile, Target, Mountain Dew, and HP. His career has also spawned a number of promotional projects, such as a snowboarding video game, a clothing line, and a number of snowboarding DVDs.
Intoxication and Harassment Controversies
After a rowdy hotel stay in Nashville, Tennessee, White was arrested in September 2012 for public intoxication and vandalism. White allegedly destroyed a phone and triggered a fire alarm in the hotel, forcing guests to flee.
According to reports, White tried to flee the hotel in a taxi, and when a hotel patron tried to stop him, White kicked him and fled. The patron pursued White on foot until White fell and hit his head on a nearby fence. White was treated for his injuries at a nearby hospital before being arrested and booked by officers.
Lena Zawaideh, the former drummer of White’s rock band, sued the snowboarding champion in 2016. According to the lawsuit, White forced her to view sexually explicit images and videos and wrongfully fired her from the band. The following year, a settlement was reached.
During White’s turn in the Olympic spotlight in early 2018, the issue was resurrected. In a press conference following his halfpipe victory, he stated that he was “here to talk about the Olympics, not gossip.” He later apologized for referring to the allegations as “gossip,” telling The New York Times, “I regret my behavior of many years ago and am sorry that I made anyone — especially someone I considered a friend — uncomfortable.”
