Early Life and Career

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. With a Lebanese father and Colombian mother, Shakira honors both her Latin American and Arabic heritage in her music. She wrote her first song at the age of 8 and signed her first recording contract at 13.

Breakthrough: ‘Pies Descalzos’

After the failure of her first two albums, Shakira took her third album into her own hands and was involved in every aspect of the production.

Pies Descalzos, which translates as “bare feet,” was released in 1996 and sold over 3 million copies. Their distinctive sound, a fusion of Latin, rock and Arabic musical styles, was featured on the album. Their second album, Dónde Están Los Ladrones? (1998), translated as “Where are the Thieves?”, reached the top of the Billboard Latin charts. A short time later, Shakira won her first Grammy Award for Shakira: MTV Unplugged (Best Latin Pop Album) (2000).

With the success of her albums, Shakira also became known in Spanish-speaking markets and is known for her powerful voice and incredible hip-swinging belly dance moves.

International Stardom: ‘Laundry Service’

While Shakira was very popular in the rest of the world, she had not yet had much success on the U.S. pop charts. To increase her American fan base, the singer moved to Miami, Florida, with her family in 1997 at the age of 20 and taught herself to write songs in English. There she hired Emilio Estefan of Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine as manager and producer.

Shakira’s first English-language album, Laundry Service, was released in 2001 and quickly brought her the success she had hoped for in the United States. The album landed at #3 on the charts and sold over 200,000 copies in its first week. “Whenever, Wherever” and “Underneath Your Clothes” were two of Laundry Service’s biggest hits.

‘Oral Fixation’

In 2005, Shakira returned to the top 10 of the album charts twice. In June of that year, she released Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 in Spanish, followed by Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 in English in November. For Fijación Oral, Vol. 1, Shakira won her second Grammy for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album, while the English album spawned the monster hit “Hips Don’t Lie.”

Shakira released two more concert albums, Live in 2007 and Oral Fixation Tour in 2008. In July 2009, she released a new single, “She Wolf,” from her studio album of the same name. The album debuted at #15 on the Billboard charts in 2009 and went platinum in 2010.

Around the same time, her hit “Waka Waka” from the 2010 album Sale el Sol became the theme song for the FIFA World Cup. Shortly after, the now world-renowned superstar went on tour to promote her album. The video for “Waka Waka” had been viewed over a billion times by January 2016.

By 2012, Shakira’s album sales in the United States had nearly doubled to nearly 10 million, and her worldwide album sales exceeded 70 million, making her the best-selling Colombian artist of all time and the second most successful Latin American singer after Gloria Estefan.

‘The Voice’

Shakira was confirmed as a judge/coach on NBC’s popular singing competition show The Voice in late 2012. Shakira made her Voice debut alongside R&B singer-songwriter Usher on the premiere of the fourth season, which aired on March 25, 2013.

Shakira and Usher joined returning judges/coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, replacing Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green. “Usher and Shakira come in as a big fucking institution,” Levine told The Huffington Post in late 2012. “It’s different, but it still feels good because they’re real artists.”

Shakira quickly gained popularity with television viewers. Although she and Usher left The Voice at the end of the season to make way for the return of Aguilera and Green, the newcomers from season four returned as coaches in season six.

More Music: ‘Shakira’ to ‘El Dorado’

In March 2014, Shakira released her self-titled studio album, which included a song with fellow Voice member Shelton. That same year, she returned to the world stage to close the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil with her signature grooves.

In the meantime, the Latin superstar worked on her music. In October 2016, she released a new single, “Chantaje,” from her upcoming album El Dorado. The tracklist of El Dorado consisted almost entirely of songs sung in Spanish when it was released in May 2017. The Latino singer’s album went multi-platinum, and in June she announced a tour.

Unfortunately, the tour did not go as planned. Shakira canceled her performance in Cologne scheduled for November 8 due to a vocal cord strain. Although she hoped to recover in time for a November 10 show in Paris, she apologized for canceling this and other dates.

In late December, Shakira announced that she had recovered and planned to continue her tour. Her El Dorado world tour resumed in June 2018 after another Grammy win for best Latin pop album, but there was another snafu when fans noticed that a necklace sold on the artist’s website resembled a Nazi symbol. The tour organizer apologized for the “accidental resemblance” and took responsibility for the design.

Super Bowl Halftime Show With J.Lo

Shakira and Jennifer Lopez have announced their collaboration for the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show in Miami, Florida, in September 2019. “I am incredibly honored and humbled to represent, in some way, alongside J.Lo, the Latino community, which is such a powerful force in the United States,” Shakira said.

Shakira took the stage first, showing off her hip-swinging moves as she raced through a medley of her hits, sprinkled in a few guitar licks, manned the drums and sent social media users into a frenzy with her tongue lashing.

Personal Life

Shakira founded the Pies Descalzos Foundation to help children in her native Colombia get a good education. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador ( UNICEF ) and in 2010 was recognized by the International Labor Organization (ILO) for her philanthropic efforts.

Shakira is dating Gerard Piqué, a Spanish soccer player. The couple gave birth to their first child together on January 22, 2013. According to a statement on Shakira’s website, they named their son Milan, which means “dear, loving and gracious” in Slavic, “eager and laborious” in ancient Roman and “union” in Sanskrit. In August 2014, the couple again announced their pregnancy. Sasha, their second son, was born on January 29, 2015.

Shakira previously had a relationship with Antonio de la Rua, the son of former Argentine President Fernando de la Rua. De la Rua made headlines in April 2013 when he sued Shakira for $250 million, claiming he helped create some of her hits and the “Shakira brand.”
