Early Life

Sean Michael Taylor was born in Miami, Florida on April 1, 1983. He was the son of Pedro Taylor, the Florida City police chief, and Donna Junor. His parents divorced when he was three years old. He was raised primarily by his father and stepmother, Josephine Taylor, in the Miami-Dade County neighborhood of Richmond Heights.

Taylor attended Gulliver Preparatory School, where he played running back on offense and defensive back and linebacker on defense. In 2000, he assisted Gulliver in winning the Florida Class 2A State Championship. He also attended the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003.

NFL Career and Legal Issues

Taylor has been in trouble on and off the field since being drafted as the fifth overall pick in 2004. Taylor was immediately fined $25,000 for failing to attend a mandatory rookie symposium shortly after being drafted.

Taylor was accused in 2005 of brandishing a gun at a man and repeatedly hitting him during a fight that erupted after Taylor and some friends went in search of the people who had allegedly stolen his all-terrain vehicles. Taylor pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors and received an 18-month probation sentence. The NFL fined him as well. He was fined $17,000 in January 2006 for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman during a playoff game.

Taylor, known as one of the NFL’s hardest hitters, died on November 27, 2007, one day after intruders shot him inside his Miami-area home.

Taylor was murdered by four young men aged 17 to 20. Jason Mitchell, Eric Rivera, Charles Wardlow, and Venjah Hunte were charged with first-degree murder, home invasion with a firearm or other deadly weapon, and armed burglary.

Taylor, his girlfriend, Jackie Garcia, and their 18-month-old daughter were in their master bedroom early on November 26 when they heard a noise in the living room, according to Richard Sharpstein, Taylor’s attorney and long-time friend. Taylor had grabbed “a machete or something of that sort” and was on his way to the bedroom door when someone burst through and opened fire with a pistol. Taylor’s girlfriend, who was hiding under the bedsheets, and the baby, who was in a crib, were unharmed.

Jesse Jackson, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and former football star O.J. Simpson were among those who attended Taylor’s funeral and said he “was just a great athlete.” Taylor’s Washington Redskins teammates wore patches on their jerseys and helmet stickers with his number, 21, on them.
