Despite significant health challenges, Hamilton thrived on the ice, playing hockey but preferring to focus on figure skating, entering competitions by the age of 11.
He moved to Illinois to pursue training but dropped out in the mid-1970s due to the high costs. After his mother died in 1977, Hamilton returned to the sport and received sponsorship.
Hamilton won several skating championships before being invited to the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, where he served as the team’s flag bearer during the opening ceremonies and finished fifth in the male figure skating competition.
By the time he arrived in Sarajevo, Hamilton had won the US and world championships every year since 1981, and he would go on to win 15 consecutive championships by 1984. Despite having trouble with his short and long programs, he won the 1984 Olympic gold medal with a combined score that included the compulsory competition, beating out his closest competitor, Brian Orser.
