Early Life and Career
Sara Gilbert was born Sara Rebecca Abeles in Santa Monica, California on January 29, 1975. Gilbert is the third generation of her family to work in show business. Her grandparents were Harry Crane, best known for writing The Honeymooners, and Julia Crane, a dancer who was once crowned “Miss Brooklyn.” Meanwhile, Gilbert’s mother, Barbara Crane, worked as a producer and talent manager in Hollywood.
Melissa and Jonathan Gilbert, Gilbert’s two older half-siblings, were both child actors who appeared on the NBC series Little House on the Prairie in the 1980s. Sara Gilbert claims she decided to pursue acting because she was envious of all the gifts her older siblings received on the set of Little House on the Prairie.
Gilbert made her television debut in a Kool-Aid commercial when she was six years old, in 1981. She landed a role in the TV movie Calamity Jane after several years of commercial acting (1984).
Star Turn on ‘Roseanne’
Gilbert’s big break came in 1988, when she landed a starring role in the ABC sitcom Roseanne. The show quickly became a huge hit, focusing on the blue-collar family life of Roseanne Conner (played by Roseanne Barr), her husband (John Goodman), and their three children. Darlene Conner, the sharp-witted and down-to-earth middle daughter, was played by Gilbert.
Darlene’s transformation from a tomboyish adolescent to an artistic and politically engaged adolescent was largely based on Gilbert’s own life, which aired from 1988 to 1997. Gilbert’s comic and realistic portrayal of adolescent life earned her three consecutive Young Artist Awards (1991-’93) and two Emmy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress (1993 and ’94). Gilbert also wrote “Don’t Make Me Over,” a Roseanne episode that aired during the fourth season.
‘Roseanne’ Reboot and ‘The Conners’
The Roseanne cast agreed to reunite for a reboot in 2018, thanks in large part to Gilbert’s efforts. The show became a ratings smash upon its March 27 premiere, with the children now adults and the family dealing with new topical issues, such as Donald Trump’s presidency. The good times, however, came to an end two months later when Barr’s racist tweet about former President Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett caused ABC to cancel the show.
Fortunately for the cast and writers, ABC announced in June that it was moving forward with a spinoff titled The Conners, sans Roseanne. Gilbert and several of her onscreen family members issued a joint statement saying, “We all returned last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges that working-class families face today. We are thrilled to be able to return with the cast and crew to continue sharing those stories through love and laughter.”
The Conners premiered in October of that year and ended its season in January of the following year, with strong enough ratings to earn a second season on ABC.
Gilbert was best known for her work on the daytime talk show The Talk between the original run of Roseanne and its reboot and spinoff. Gilbert served as one of the show’s original co-hosts, alongside Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Leah Remini, and Holly Robinson Peete, when it first aired in 2010.
The Talk carved out a niche in the crowded daytime talk show landscape by focusing on issues through the lens of motherhood.
When Gilbert made her final appearance as co-host in August 2019, the show was still going strong.
Film and TV Roles
Outside of her well-known projects, Gilbert has made numerous film and television appearances. Her most notable film credits include High Fidelity (2000), in which she co-starred with John Cusack, and Poison Ivy (1992), in which she co-starred with Drew Barrymore (2001).
Gilbert returned to television in 2001, co-starring in the CBS sitcom Welcome to New York with Jim Gaffigan. She landed a recurring role on the popular Fox drama 24, and she played Dr. Jane Figler on NBC’s medical drama ER from 2004 to 2007, while also starring in the WB comedy series Twins. Gilbert has also appeared in a number of popular television shows, including The Simpsons, Will & Grace, and Law & Order.
She had a recurring role as Leslie Winkle on The Big Bang Theory beginning in 2007, and she co-starred in the lone season of Bad Teacher in 2014. Gilbert also appeared on Living Biblically, which was produced by her former Roseanne and The Big Bang Theory co-star Johnny Galecki, though the show was short-lived in 2018.
Gilbert signed on for a recurring role in the Netflix series Atypical after leaving The Talk.
Gilbert attended Yale University while still starring in Roseanne. She earned a B.A. in art with a concentration in photography in 1997.

She is a long-time vegan who has collaborated extensively with the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which named her Roseanne character as one of the most animal-friendly TV characters in history. Gilbert also volunteers with the Earth Communication Office, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of environmental issues. She has also worked with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and AIDS Project Los Angeles.
Gilbert was married to her longtime partner, television and film writer and producer Allison Adler, from 2002 to 2011. They have two children through artificial insemination: Hank Levi Gilbert-Adler (b. 2004) and Sawyer Gilbert-Adler (b. 2005). (b. 2007).

Gilbert first discussed her sexual orientation publicly in 2010, prior to the premiere of The Talk.
“I don’t think it’ll be a problem,” she said. “I don’t think of things as being out or in; I just think I’m who I am, and when appropriate topics come up, I’ll talk about them and share when it feels right.”
