RuPaul was born on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California, as RuPaul Andre Charles. RuPaul’s parents divorced when he was seven, and he spent his adolescence in Atlanta, Georgia, with his sister and her husband. RuPaul was the only boy of his parents’ four children and grew up wearing his sisters’ clothes and dabbling in cross-dressing, idolizing stars such as Diana Ross and Jane Fonda.
RuPaul attended the Northside School of Performing Arts in Atlanta, and while he did not graduate, it was a significant step toward getting his feet wet in the world of performance and, eventually, show business. RuPaul took the next step in 1982, when he sent a photo of himself to a local TV show called The American Music Show, requesting an appearance. He was soon appearing on the show on a regular basis, often with his newly formed band, RuPaul and the U-Hauls.
Wigstock and Hit Song “Supermodel (You Better Work)”
RuPaul and the U-Hauls split up not long after, and Wee Wee Pole took their place, performing around Atlanta. During this time, RuPaul made his first foray into acting, appearing in uncredited roles in a string of low-budget films. While these appearances did not help RuPaul climb the fame ladder, he was never short of ideas for how to advance his career. In one such push, RuPaul sold postcards of himself and made small booklets with self-penned witticisms and anecdotes.
In the mid-1980s, the statuesque RuPaul left the South for New York City to participate in Wigstock, a new festival. He, his Atlanta roommate Lady Bunny (who founded Wigstock), and others would perform in drag in the East Village, with the festival eventually expanding. RuPaul’s flamboyance and ease on stage helped him become a popular club dancer, and by the end of the decade, he had earned the title “Queen of New York.”
Tommy Boy Records signed RuPaul to a recording contract in 1991, and his debut album, Supermodel of the World, was released two years later. With the single “Supermodel (You Better Work),” he scored a hit, reaching the Top 50 on the pop charts and No. 2 on the dance club charts. RuPaul’s other hits included “Snapshot” and “WorkOut,” and he remained a club fixture over the years. A duet with Elton John on a remake of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” in 1993 also drew attention and became a Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom.
TV, Films and Autobiography
RuPaul made his feature film debut in Spike Lee’s Crooklyn in 1994, launching a new chapter in his acting career. Julie Newmar would go on to play roles on TV shows like Sister, Sister, and In the House, as well as in films like The Brady Bunch Movie, Blue in the Face, and To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything (all in 1995 alone). RuPaul’s autobiography, Lettin’ It All Hang Out, was published the same year, and he also signed on as a model for MAC cosmetics. RuPaul went on to host his own TV talk show, The RuPaul Show, which aired until 1998.
Reality Show ‘Drag Race’
Despite success in music and film, RuPaul’s long-running reality TV competition RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as its later variations such as All Stars and Untucked!, really cemented his place in the cultural landscape in 2009. After RuPaul won his first Emmy for Drag Race in 2016, the March 2017 season 9 premiere featured Lady Gaga and became the most watched episode in the show’s history, with nearly one million viewers tuning in.
Podcast and ‘Gay for Play’
Never one to rest on his laurels, RuPaul launched his RuPaul: What’s the Tee? podcast with frequent collaborator Michelle Visage in 2014, and he served as a judge on the body painting competition Skin Wars. He also hosted the trivia game show Gay for Play for two seasons beginning in April 2016, while continuing to release albums such as Slay Belles in 2015 and Remember Me: Essential, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 and American in 2017.
Another holiday-themed album, Christmas Party, was released in late 2018, as was RuPaul’s third book, GuRu. His attempt to return to the daytime talk show circuit with 2019’s RuPaul, as well as his 2020 Netflix comedy-drama series, AJ and the Queen, were both unsuccessful. Undaunted, the drag icon released You’re a Winner Baby, his thirteenth studio album, in January 2020, and hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time the following month.
Hollywood Walk of Fame
RuPaul received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in March 2018, making her the first drag queen to do so. Following a speech by Fonda, one of his early influences, he tearfully told the audience that this was “absolutely the most important moment in my professional career.”
In January 2017, RuPaul married his longtime partner, Australian painter Georges LeBar.
