Milsap was born in the Appalachian town of Robbinsville, North Carolina, on January 16, 1943. Milsap, who has been blind since birth, spent his childhood in a poor farming community. He attended the Morehead State School for the Blind in Raleigh, where he was taught classical music and learned to play the piano, violin, and guitar with the help of his grandparents.
Milsap continued his education at Young-Harris Junior College in northern Georgia’s mountainous region, where he studied political science. He was offered a scholarship to Emory University after graduation, but instead chose to pursue a professional career in music.
At the age of 20, Milsap released his first single, “Total Disaster,” in 1964. He moved to Memphis the following year, where he led his own rhythm and blues band. They released the pop single “Loving You Is a Natural Thing” in 1970. Milsap’s eponymous debut album for Warner Bros. was released the following year.
In 1972, Milsap moved to the epicentre of country music, Nashville, Tennessee, and signed with RCA Victor in 1973. A string of hit singles followed, including “I Hate You” (1973), “Pure Love” and “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends” (both 1974).
