Actor and producer. On December 19, 1946, in Toronto, Ohio, he was born. Urich attended Florida State University on a football scholarship for four years, majoring in communications before earning a master’s degree in broadcast research and management from Michigan State University.

Though his heart was in acting, he began his career as an account executive at Chicago’s WGN radio in the early 1970s before landing his first big break as Burt Reynolds‘ younger brother in the play The Rainmaker. Urich traveled to Hollywood at Reynolds’ request and landed his first television role on the 1973 comedy series Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. But it wasn’t until his role as officer Jim Street on ABC’s cop show S.W.A.T. in 1975 that audiences took notice.

Before starring in Vega$, Robert Urich played Peter Campbell in ABC’s groundbreaking comedy Soap in 1976. Many fans will remember him best for his role as detective Dan Tanna, which he played for three seasons.

He appeared in several films in the 1980s, including the cult sci-fi comedy The Ice Pirates with Anjelica Huston and Turk 182 with Timothy Hutton. He then returned to television to play another private investigator on Spenser: For Hire, which aired from 1985 to 1988.
