He grew up in a large Methodist family as one of five children of Homer and Doris Ann Gere. Gere was a musical child and became a good trumpet player.

After graduating from North Syracuse Central High School in 1967, Richard Gere studied philosophy at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and received a scholarship to gymnastics. Richard Gere Films

‘Looking for Mr. Goodbar,’ ‘Days of Heaven’

Gere made his film debut in 1977 with the dramatic thriller Looking for Mr. Goodbar, co-starring Diane Keaton. He plays a rough-and-tumble lothario who meets a schoolteacher in the film (Keaton). Gere landed a starring role in Terrence Malick’s epic Days of Heaven the following year.

‘American Gigolo,’ ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’

Gere rose to prominence as an actor in the 1980s. He played the title role in American Gigolo in 1980. Gere’s character in the film embodies smooth and cool, with his distinct fashion sense and swagger. Two years later, he played the romantic lead opposite Debra Winger in An Officer and a Gentleman. Gere stars as a troubled military recruit who falls for a local girl near his basic training camp. The drama was a box office success.

‘Pretty Woman,’ ‘Internal Affairs,’ ‘Primal Fear’

Gere found new success with the romantic comedy Pretty Woman in 1990. The film follows the unlikely friendship that develops between a prostitute (Julia Roberts) and her client (Gere). He also demonstrated his versatility by playing a dirty cop in 1990’s Internal Affairs and a defense attorney in Primal Fear (1996).

Julia Roberts, who co-starred with Richard Gere in the movie Pretty Woman, earned around $300,000. As Roberts was being paid that much while still being a relatively unknown actor, you can only imagine what Gere was being paid for his role.

  2. I loved him best in the movie Hachiko (Hachi) Every comment I read everyone cried including myself big time…. The love of a Dog to its Owner is more than any human love….. A Dog is Mans Best Friend… Dogs give what people dont its simple… Give Dogs so little and receive so much more in return….. Actually I own the same dog breed as Hachi and she is called Kiki …. One and a half years old…. Looks just like a Fox this breed of dog, except that the tail is not bushy…. curled actually… and looks exactly like Hachi….
