As a disclaimer, I’m not an affiliate of Rev.com, meaning I’m not paid to write this review for Rev.com. So you can be sure that my words are unbiased.
Over the past weeks, I have done thorough research about Rev.com, so I can tell you everything you need to know before joining Rev.com.
In this Rev.com review, I’m going to cover the following topics.
What is Rev.com?
Rev.com is a website that offers low-cost transcription, captioning, and foreign subtitling services. Rev has a large network of professional transcriptionists as well as over 50,000 freelancers worldwide. These people are known as “Revvers.”
Rev is headquartered in San Francisco and Austin, Texas. Forbes, The New York Times, Business Insider, and other major publications have covered it. According to its website, the company has worked with over 170,000 clients.
This Austin-based company has been in operation since 2010. It was founded by five MIT classmates. It has transcribed and captioned thousands of audio and video recordings for clients such as:
Rev’s pricing is adaptable, allowing it to meet the needs of a wide range of content creators. It also offers specialized services for businesses and software developers.
Transcription of audio and video is a popular way to supplement one’s income from home. The issue is that it does not pay well, and you must still trade your time for money.
Even though it is preferable to a job you despise, it does not provide you with the freedom you seek.
You probably want peace of mind, whether you’re concerned about your health, your children, or your finances.
You want a steady income and to be free of worry. Rev.com is one option, but it does not provide passive income, which may be what you require to achieve the desired level of peace of mind.
How Much Money Does Rev.com Pay?
The amount you are paid as a Revver is determined by the type of work you do. You have three options that will each pay you:
- Transcriptionist – $0.30 to $1.10 per audio/video minute
- Captioner – $0.54 to $1.10 per audio/video minute
- Translator/ Subtitler – $1.50-$3.00 per audio/video minute
A transcriptionist’s job is to listen to video or audio and type out exactly what is said. A captioner is responsible for watching videos, typing up the dialogue and sounds, and ensuring that the typed audio matches the video.
You can translate and subtitrate if you know a foreign language. Subtitling is more lucrative than translating. Every Monday, a Revver is paid via PayPal for the work they completed the previous week.
How Much Can You Earn Working At Rev.com?
You can earn between $18 and $66 for each hour or 60 minutes of audio or video. However, keep in mind that it takes longer to type up and sync the transcription, so it all depends on how quickly you work.
According to the Rev website, it takes an average person one hour to transcribe 15 minutes of clear audio. This means you’ll need to work four hours to transcribe 60 minutes of audio and earn at least $18.
You can see from the math that your hourly rate is only $4.50. It will take longer if you move slowly. A professional can transcribe one hour of audio in two to three hours.
According to a retired truck driver who is also a Revver, he typically takes on 50-75 jobs per week and works on them for about 25 hours per week. Only $600 to $800 per month is received.
Rev.com might be a good place to look for a weekend or part-time job. For those just starting out, there are many different jobs available, such as transcribers, translators, and so on. Starting pay ranges between $5 and $7 per hour.
If you’re a student looking to supplement your income or live in a country with low living costs, $5 to $7 per hour may suffice. However, it is significantly lower than the living wage in the United Kingdom or the United States.
The amount of money you make each month is determined by how much you work. You have a lot of leeway in this situation.
You have the option of working when and where you want. As a result, you have the option of working one day per week or every day of the week.
People rarely work full-time. If you work hard, you could earn between $1,000 and $2,000 per month.
Is Rev.com a Scam?
Given that Rev has worked with big brands and been mentioned by celebrities, it appears that they are not a scam.
Rev doesn’t run away. They have a Facebook page with 11,000 fans and pictures and posts from and about the staff.
Even though many freelancer reviews are negative about Rev, you can be confident that it is a legitimate company.
Rev has strong working relationships with well-known brands such as Real Simple, Forbes, The New York Times, and many more. No one, especially well-known businesses, will do business with someone or something they suspect is a scam.
It’s worth repeating that the organization received the PC Mg’s Editor’s Choice Award for its outstanding work in the field of transcription.
How Do You Apply For a Job At Rev.com?
Anyone, regardless of where they live, can apply to Rev.
To do transcription work, the company hires freelancers both in person and online. Because of the company’s reputation, Rev.com has a difficult application process.
The entire application process could take up to an hour, and you may be required to take a variety of tests in order to be considered a good candidate.
Rev has a three-round selection process in which you will be tested on your typing, transcription, and grammar skills.
The first round will assess your typing speed. To advance to the next level, you must be able to type extremely well. You’ll have 60 seconds to type as many words as you can in this section. Your typing speed and accuracy will be evaluated. Following this round, you will proceed to the next round, which will be a grammar check.
The following round is a grammar test in which you must watch or listen to something and write it down without making any mistakes. To pass this round, you must have excellent grammar and punctuation skills according to the style guide.
The transcription test is the final and most important step in the hiring process. You’ll have two speakers for sound this time. Your task will be to tell the two people apart and record what they say.
The best part about this round is that there is no set deadline. However, it is much better to complete the test quickly because as time passes, more people take it.
After submitting your application, you will receive an email from Rev.com in one to two business days informing you whether or not you passed the test.
If you failed the first time, you could try again after 45 days.
What are the Job Positions at Rev.com For Freelancers?
Rev has 4 available positions for freelancers.
- Transcriptionist: Converting spoken English audio into a written document.
- Captioner: Transcribe spoken English and add captions to video.
- Subtitler: Translate spoken words on screen and add subtitles to video.
- Translator: Translation for purposes other than video subtitles.
Even if you’ve never used online transcription or translation services before, they’re simple to use.
When clients send Rev audio and video files, you receive them to transcribe or translate.
Basically, you sit at your computer (in a quiet place) and listen to and type out conversations about things you probably don’t care about.
It appears simple, but you frequently have to deal with poor sound quality, difficult-to-understand accents, and people talking over each other.
Pros of Rev.com
- The schedule is adaptable, and it can be completed alongside other freelance work.
- People who translate from more than one language are compensated well.
- Users can pick and choose from the available projects.
Cons and Complaints of Rev.com
- Complaints about the manner in which work was graded
- Pay is heavily influenced by how fast and accurate you are.
- Assignments do not come in a consistent stream.

In affiliate marketing, you can run your business almost at zero cost without any trouble of creating a great deal of artwork.
