Ralph George Macchio Jr. was born in Huntington, Long Island, New York on November 4, 1961. He is the eldest son of Rosalie and Ralph Macchio Sr.
Macchio began tap dancing lessons at the age of three and was discovered at the age of sixteen while performing an Eddie Cantor impression in a local dance recital. An agent approached him and began sending him on commercial auditions. Macchio, on the other hand, was not sold on the idea of becoming an actor. When an audition clashed with an invitation to a beach party that seemed too good to pass up, he sent a friend in his place to the audition.
‘The Outsiders’ & ‘Karate Kid’
Despite his reservations, Macchio landed the role of Betty Buckley’s rough-and-tumble nephew on the TV show Eight is Enough and became an instant teen heartthrob. When the show ended, he auditioned for and was cast as Johnny Cade in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film The Outsiders, alongside Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Matt Dillon.
In 1984, Macchio played Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid, his most well-known role. The film catapulted the baby-faced actor to stardom, but despite the film’s success and Macchio’s newfound fame, he struggled to find quality roles. Despite playing a high school student, Macchio was 22 when he made The Karate Kid, and while his youthful appearance worked well in the film, it made transitioning to adult roles difficult.
In the years that followed, Macchio appeared in two sequels to The Karate Kid as well as a few box office flops like Teachers, Crossroads, and Distant Thunder. With his film career on hold, he turned to the stage, making his off-Broadway debut in Cuba and His Teddy Bear in 1986 with Robert DeNiro. The show was a smash hit, and it quickly transferred to Broadway. In 1989, he appeared in another off-Broadway production, Only Kidding.
Macchio had another big hit in 1992 with My Cousin Vinny, in which he co-starred with Marisa Tomei and Joe Pesci. Despite positive reviews, the film did not result in additional leading roles in major motion pictures. He did, however, continue to act, appearing in a road production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and in small roles on TV shows such as Entourage in 2005 and Ugly Betty in 2008.
Macchio finished fourth on the 12th season of ABC’s dance competition show Dancing with the Stars in 2011. The actor credits the show with giving his career a boost. Since then, he has produced a National Geographic Channel series called American Gypsies and starred in the film He’s Way More Famous Than You alongside Ben Stiller, Jesse Eisenberg, and Vanessa Williams. In 2012, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Macchio was cast as Psycho screenwriter Joe Stefano in Hitchcock, an Alfred Hitchcock biopic starring Helen Mirren, Anthony Hopkins, and Scarlett Johansson, in April 2012.
In 2017, it was announced that Macchio would star in a YouTube Red series based on Karate Kid, alongside William Zabka, who played Johnny Lawrence in the original film.
When Macchio was 15, he met his wife, Phyllis Fierro, through his grandmother. Daniel and Julia, their two children, were born in 1987. For State Farm, Macchio and his son, Daniel, created a series of short films about safe driving.
