PewDiePie Net Worth 2022 (Forbes) – Salary, Income, Earnings

PewDiePie Net Worth

PewDiePie has an estimated net worth of $54 million. Swedish web-based comedian PewDiePie (Felix Kjellberg) is popular for his “Let’s Play” YouTube commentaries. At various times in recent history, he has been the highest-earning YouTuber in the world and the most subscribed channel on YouTube. He usually uploads videos in which he plays video games.

Felix Kjellberg, also known as PewDiePie, is one of the internet’s biggest stars, with over 100 million subscribers to his YouTube channel and over 24 billion views. The PewDiePie channel is best known for its irreverent gaming content, which is shot in a “Let’s Play” format — videos of Kjellberg playing video games while providing an expletive-laced running commentary. “Let’s play” became a hugely popular YouTube genre, and PewDiePie became its superstar; his repertoire now includes live-action and animated comedy shorts.

In total, PewDiePie has earned over $73 million before taxes with his YouTube empire since 2013. In an interview, he confirmed that his net worth is “much, much” higher than $20 million.

However, as the Swede’s celebrity grew, his actions became increasingly controversial. He apologized in 2012 for using the terms “gay” and “retard” as supposedly playful insults and for making rape jokes — but after posting videos containing anti-Semitic and Nazi imagery, he was dropped by his network partner, the Disney-owned Maker Studios, in February 2017; he was also kicked off YouTube’s Red platform and the Google Preferred program.

He apologized, claiming that his wit had been misconstrued, only to use the n-word months later during a live stream in September 2017. PewDiePie’s future, like his videos, appears to be frighteningly unpredictable.

To calculate the net worth of PewDiePie, subtract all his liabilities from his total assets. Investments, savings, cash deposits, and any equity he has in a house, car, or other similar asset are included in the total assets. All debts, such as student loans and credit card debt, are included in total liabilities.

Here’s the breakdown of his net worth:

Name: PewDiePie

Monthly Income: $1 Million
Annual Salary: $15 Million

How Felix Kjellberg Became PewDiePie

Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, on October 24, 1989. Johanna and Ulf, his mother and father, are both successful CEOs. He enjoyed drawing and playing on his Super Nintendo as a child; his obsession with video games grew during adolescence when he spent a lot of time gaming in his bedroom or at internet cafes. “Sweden has a great gaming culture,” he told Rolling Stone magazine in 2015. “We’re a bunch of nerds.”

During his senior year of high school, he purchased a computer with money earned from selling artwork at his grandmother’s gallery. He created his first YouTube channel, PewDie, in 2006 — “pew” is slang for the sound of a laser gun firing — but as his interest waned, he forgot his password, so when he returned to YouTube in 2010, he had to create a new account, PewDiePie.

Kjellberg had learned to edit videos from an online tutorial by this point, and had uploaded his first “Let’s Play” video — of himself playing Minecraft. He created his PewDiePie account while studying industrial economics and technology management at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. He struggled to fit in at Chalmers, telling Icon Magazine’s Maria Lindholm, “I had nothing in common with the rest of the people in the program.”

Felix Kjellberg: From Hotdog Seller to Maker Studios Superstar

PewDiePie rose to prominence after filming himself screaming his way through the horror game Amnesia and receiving viewer requests for more of the same. He was soon uploading several clips per day, and in 2011, much to his parents’ chagrin, he dropped out of Chalmers to work at a hotdog stand while he built his channel.

In July 2012, he reached his first million subscribers. He had 2 million dollars two months later. By December of that year, he had signed with Maker Studios, a talent network for video creators that provides resources, expertise, and assistance with promotion and marketing in exchange for a cut of ad revenue, and his channel had quickly grown from 100 million to 200 million views per month. On August 15, 2013, PewDiePie became the world’s most-subscribed YouTube channel.

PewDiePie’s Problems with Rants and Racism

Kjellberg announced in August 2014, the same month Maker Studios released a PewDiePie iPhone app, that he would disable online comments under his YouTube videos, citing them as “mainly spam.” In October, he made a partial concession, allowing only “approved” comments. In April 2016, he apologized for using words like “gay” and “retard” in previous videos, saying, “I just thought things were funny because they were offensive.” “I’d say a lot of stupid nonsense.” It appeared that PewDiePie was finally maturing.

By November, however, his tone had shifted again: he threatened to delete his channel once it reached 50 million subscribers, venting his rage at YouTube over an allegedly unexplained loss of subscribers.

Soon after, on December 8th, he reached 50 million subscribers — but instead of deleting the channel, he deleted a secondary channel, Jack septiceye2, on which he had only ever posted two videos, claiming that the whole thing had been “a joke.” After all, the main PewDiePie channel is a very lucrative source of income to give up — according to Forbes, Kjellberg earned $15 million in 2016. (the total also included ad revenue from his YouTube Red channel and sales of 112,000 copies of his book, This Book Loves You).

However, after Kjellberg appeared to use the n-word in a video, the hashtags #PewDiePieIsOver and #PewDiePieIsOverParty began trending on Twitter the following month. Days later, he sparked even more controversy by paying two Indian men $5 to hold a sign that read “Death to all Jews.” He apologized and stated, “I didn’t think they’d actually do it.”

Nonetheless, after other videos containing anti-Semitic jokes surfaced, Maker Studios severed ties with PewDiePie in February 2017. On February 17th, Kjellberg issued an apology titled My Response, but he also criticized the media’s coverage of his videos. He had to apologize again in September 2017 after using the n-word during a live stream.

“I’m really disappointed in myself, because it seems I’ve learnt nothing from these past controversies,” he said. “Being in the position I am, I should know better.”

100 Million Subscribers and Hiatus

Although PewDiePie was overtaken by Indian record label T-Series as the most subscribed YouTube channel in spring 2019, it retained the top spot for an individually owned channel, surpassing the 100 million subscriber mark in August.

A few weeks later, the social media star stirred things up again by backing out of his pledge to donate $50,000 to the Anti-Defamation League. The social media star said he’d been advised to choose the nonprofit organisation to quash accusations of anti-Semitism, although he preferred to donate the money to a charity that was “personally close to his heart.”

In December 2019, PewDiePie announced that he’d retire from the platform that made him famous.

“I’m going to take a break from YouTube next year,” he said in a video. “I wanted to say it in advance because I decided to do it. I’m tired, I feel very tired. I don’t know if you guys can tell … At the beginning of next year I’ll be away for a while. I’ll explain that later, but I wanted to give you a heads up.”
