Swayze chose athletics and attended San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas, where he specialized in gymnastics. He dropped out of school two years later to tour with the Disney on Parade ice show as Snow White’s Prince Charming.
Swayze moved to New York City in 1972 to pursue a dance career. He began his training with the Harkness and Joffrey Ballet companies before joining the Eliot Feld Ballet Company as a principal dancer. His success, however, was cut short when an old football injury necessitated knee surgery. Swayze was fired from the prestigious Feld Company as a result of the operation and the infection that followed.

Dirty Dancing also gave Swayze the opportunity to pursue a singing career. Swayze and co-writer Stacy Widelitz wrote the song “She’s Like the Wind” for the film’s soundtrack, which was inspired by his relationship with his wife, Lisa. “I’d met girls with names like Mimi and Angel. And I didn’t feel like I deserved her for a long time “People magazine quoted Swayze as saying. “At the time, I just felt very, very lucky to have a woman who thinks I hung the moon.”
The song struck a chord with music fans, propelling the single to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Wife & Personal

After Lisa miscarried in 1990, the couple decided against having children. Instead, they dedicated their time and love to their ranch, which included dogs, horses, and cattle. “We’re a team,” Swayze and his wife said. “A relationship survives by keeping the friendship alive, learning how to fall in love again and again, never taking the other person for granted, and seeing things through new eyes.”
Swayze broke his right leg in a horseback riding accident while filming Letters From a Killer in 1997. Around that time, the actor realized that a serious drinking problem was impeding his career, so he checked into a rehab clinic.
