Early Life and Education
On January 29, 1954, Winfrey was born in the rural town of Kosciusko, Mississippi. Winfrey moved to Nashville to live with her father, Vernon, a barber and businessman, after a troubled adolescence in a small farming community where she was sexually abused by a number of male relatives and friends of her mother, Vernita.
Winfrey enrolled at Tennessee State University in 1971. In Nashville, she began her career in radio and television broadcasting.
Early Broadcasting Career
Winfrey relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1976, to host the TV chat show People Are Talking. The show was a success, and Winfrey stayed with it for eight years before being hired by a Chicago television station to host her own morning show, A.M. Chicago.
Phil Donahue was her main rival for the time slot. Within a few months, Winfrey’s open, warm-hearted personality had won her 100,000 more viewers than Donahue, propelling her show from last to first in the ratings.
‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’
In 1986, Winfrey launched The Oprah Winfrey Show, a nationally syndicated program that lasted 25 years until 2011. With 120 channels and a 10 million-person audience, the show grossed $125 million by the end of its first year, with Winfrey receiving $30 million.
She quickly took over the show from ABC, bringing it under the control of her new production company, Harpo Productions (‘Oprah’ spelled backwards), and making increasing amounts of money from syndication.
With talk shows becoming more trashy and exploitative, Winfrey pledged in 1994 to keep her show free of tabloid topics. Although her ratings initially dropped, she quickly gained the respect of her viewers and was rewarded with an increase in popularity.
The Women of Brewster Place, a highly rated 1989 TV miniseries in which Winfrey also starred, was one of Harpo’s projects.
Winfrey signed a new contract in 2004 to extend The Oprah Winfrey Show through the 2010-11 season. The syndicated show was broadcast on nearly 212 US radio stations and in over 100 countries around the world at the time.
Winfrey announced in 2009 that she would be ending her show when her contract with ABC expired in 2011.
Oprah’s Book Club
Winfrey made significant contributions to the publishing world by launching “Oprah’s Book Club” as part of her talk show. The program catapulted many unknown authors to the top of bestseller lists, giving pleasure reading a new level of popularity.
Winfrey’s book club has continued. She famously interviewed former First Lady Michelle Obama for the publication of her memoir, Becoming, in 2018.
Oprah’s Favorite Things
On her talk show in 1997, Winfrey debuted “Oprah’s Favorite Things,” an annual list of holiday gifts curated by the mogul.
Winfrey continued the annual tradition even after she moved on to other projects. The list was featured on Amazon for the 20th edition in 2017. She was the first celebrity to lend her voice to Alexa, Amazon’s voice-control system, allowing customers to hear Winfrey herself explain her top picks for the season.
Winfrey’s ratings skyrocketed during the final season of her talk show when she revealed a family secret: she has a half-sister named Patricia.
Vernita Lee, Winfrey’s mother, gave birth to a daughter in 1963. Winfrey was 9 years old and living with her father at the time. Lee placed the child for adoption because she believed that if she had another child to care for, she would be unable to get off public assistance. Patricia was raised in foster care until she was seven years old.
Patricia attempted to contact her birth mother through her adoption agency after she became an adult, but Lee refused to meet with her. She approached Winfrey’s niece after doing some research, and the two had DNA tests done, which proved they were related.
Winfrey only discovered her sister’s existence a few months before making the decision to make it public. “It was one of the most incredible surprises of my life,” she said on her show.
Winfrey has openly struggled with her weight, and her numerous attempts to lose weight have been well-documented. She revealed on her talk show in 1988 that she lost 67 pounds through a liquid diet and exercise. “I literally starved myself for four months – not a morsel of food,” she explained later. She had regained the majority of her weight by 1992.
She lost an estimated 90 pounds in 1995. (dropping to her ideal weight of around 150 pounds). She ran in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. that year.
Winfrey’s personal chef, Rosie Daley, and trainer, Bob Greene, both published best-selling books in the aftermath of her widely publicized success. However, Winfrey’s weight has fluctuated over the years.
Winfrey purchased a 10% stake in Weight Watchers in 2015. (WW). She also became a company advisor and was appointed to the board of directors, and she appeared in TV commercials as a company spokesperson.
WW had been in a slump for a few years, but Winfrey’s involvement sparked a surge in membership and stock prices.
Winfrey revealed in early 2017 that she had lost 42 pounds again, which she attributed to WW. She wrote a letter to WW members more than two years later, stating that she had been diagnosed with pre-diabetes prior to her most recent weight loss journey, but that her blood pressure and sugar levels were now under control.
Oxygen Media and ‘O Magazine’
Winfrey launched Oxygen Media, a company she co-founded dedicated to producing cable and Internet programming for women, in 1999. As a result, Winfrey cemented her place at the top of the media industry as one of the most powerful and wealthy people in show business. She signed a deal with the network in 2002 to air a prime-time supplement to her syndicated talk show.
O: The Oprah Magazine, Winfrey’s highly successful monthly magazine published by Hearst, debuted in 2000.
Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN)
Soon after the end of The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2011, Winfrey launched her own network, the Oprah Winfrey Network, a collaboration with Discovery Communications.
Despite a rocky financial start, the network made headlines in January 2013 when it aired an interview with Winfrey and Lance Armstrong, the American cyclist and seven-time Tour de France winner who had his Tour titles stripped in 2012 due to doping charges.
During the interview, Armstrong admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs such as cortisol, testosterone, and erythropoietin throughout his cycling career (also known as EPO). “I’m deeply flawed… and I’m paying the price for it, which I think is fine. I’ve earned it “He stated this. According to reports, the interview generated millions of dollars in revenue for OWN.
In a statement, Winfrey said of her interview with Armstrong, “He did not reveal himself in the way I expected. It took me by surprise. I would say that some of his answers captivated me, my team, and everyone else in the room. He seemed thorough to me. He was dead serious. He had certainly prepared for this moment. He met the moment, in my opinion. We were both exhausted by the end of it.”
Winfrey announced in March 2015 that her Chicago-based Harpo Studios would close at the end of the year to consolidate the company’s production operations to the OWN headquarters in Los Angeles. The studio was the birthplace of Winfrey’s television empire, and it housed her daily syndicated talk show until its demise in 2011.
“It was time to downsize this part of the business and move on. “It will be difficult to say goodbye,” Winfrey said, “but I know that the future holds even more than I can see.””
Greenleaf marked Winfrey’s return to acting and her first recurring scripted television role. The original family drama, set in a Memphis megachurch, debuted on OWN in June 2016.
Discovery announced in December 2017 that it had purchased 24.5 percent of OWN from its founder for $70 million, making it the company’s majority owner. Under the terms of the agreement, Winfrey retained 25.5 percent of OWN and continued to serve as its CEO.

Winfrey signed on as executive producer of On the Record, a documentary about several women who accused music producer Russell Simmons of sexual misconduct, as part of her partnership with Apple. However, Winfrey abruptly withdrew her support for the documentary just before it was set to premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
Wealth, Charity and Awards
For three years in a row, Forbes magazine named Winfrey the richest African American of the twentieth century and the world’s only Black billionaire. Life magazine named her the most powerful woman of her generation.

Campaigning for Barack Obama
In December 2007, Winfrey campaigned for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, attracting the largest crowds of the primary season to that point. Winfrey traveled with Obama to the early primary/caucus states of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. It was Winfrey’s first time campaigning for a political candidate.
The largest event took place at the University of South Carolina football stadium, where 29,000 supporters turned out for a rally that had been moved from an 18,000-seat basketball arena due to popular demand.
“The dream was conceived by Dr. (Martin Luther) King. But we don’t have to live the dream any longer “Winfrey informed the audience. “We have the opportunity to make that dream a reality by voting for a man who understands not only who we are, but who we can be.”
Campaigning for Stacey Abrams
Winfrey campaigned alongside Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, the first Black female nominee for a major party to run for governor in any state, in November 2018. Winfrey canvassed and even attended a town hall meeting with the Democratic candidate. Abrams ultimately lost her election bid to Republican Brian Kemp.
Relationship with Trump
Trump has also frequently endorsed Winfrey on Twitter, from her decision to launch a television network to her interview with Lance Armstrong.
Trump stated after becoming president that he was friends with Winfrey before running for office. Winfrey, for her part, did not mention Trump by name but did discuss political “noise,” “vitriol,” and “crazy talk.”
Trump tweeted in 2018 that Winfrey appeared “very insecure” as a special correspondent on 60 Minutes, and that he hoped she would run for president “so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others.”
Calls for 2020 Presidency
Since Winfrey’s speech at the 2018 Golden Globes, in which she criticized America’s racially charged environment, fans have speculated that she might run for President of the United States in 2020. Winfrey, on the other hand, has stated that she does not want to and has no intention of running for president.
Golden Globes Award
In January 2018, Winfrey became the first African American woman to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement from the Golden Globes. In an emotional speech, she spoke about being inspired by seeing Sidney Poitier honored at the Globes decades before, before emphasizing the importance of a free press and the power of speaking the truth in a “culture broken by brutally powerful men.”
“So I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is coming,” she concluded. “And when that new day finally comes, it will be thanks to a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, who are working hard to ensure that they become the leaders who lead us to a time when no one has to say, ‘Me too,’ ever again.”
‘The Color Purple’
Winfrey’s success on television catapulted her to national prominence and a role in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film The Color Purple, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
As one of the producers of the 11-time Tony-nominated musical The Color Purple, which ran on Broadway until 2008, Winfrey helped give it new life onstage in 2005. In 2015, Winfrey co-produced a Tony Award-winning revival of the musical.
Disney signed Winfrey to a multi-picture deal. The first project, Beloved, based on Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and starring Winfrey and Danny Glover, received mixed reviews and generally fell short of expectations.

In January 2017, CBS announced that Winfrey would become a special contributor to the newsmagazine 60 Minutes in the fall.

Since the mid-1980s, Winfrey has been in a relationship with public relations executive Stedman Graham. They got engaged in 1992 but never married.
The couple is from Chicago. Winfrey also has homes in Montecito, CA, Rolling Prairie, IN, and Telluride, CO.
Oprah has a bunch of expensive cars. She has a black Cadillac Escalade and an expensive Lincoln SUV.
In June 2012, Tesla launched the Model S, a five-door sedan that runs on electricity alone. Three years later, Oprah Winfrey became a major Tesla customer.
Although Oprah has a lot of new cars in her garage, she seemed to like old cars, too. But what she was driving was a very stylish 1950s Mercedes-Benz 300SL, not just any old car. The most interesting thing about this elegant and rare 1954 car is its gullwing doors.
Apart from the cars mentioned above, Oprah may have a big car collection. Some people consider her a public figure because she is famous, but Oprah does not seem to be a show-off when it comes to her cars. In fact, Oprah does not often share pictures of her cars on social media.

Montecito: Her 23,000-square-foot estate in Montecito, California (near Santa Barbara), which she bought in 2001 for $50 million, is perhaps her most impressive piece of property.
