Early Life

Oksana Sergeevna Baiul was born on November 16, 1977, in the Ukraine. She skates in the Olympics. She is the only child of Sergei and Marina Baiul. Oksana’s father left the family when she was very young. She fell in love with ice skating when she was four, and when she was seven, she started winning competitions.

After her grandparents and mother died when she was 13, Oksana Baiul had no one to take care of her. Her skating coach, Galina Zmievskaya, took her in and treated her like a child. Baiul lived with Zmievskaya’s family in Odessa. Zmievskaya told the Chicago Tribune in 1994 that “You have no idea what this girl did to prepare for the Olympics. There was no Zamboni at the rink. I used a hose to clean the ice myself. Never before has an Olympic winner had to train in such bad weather.”

Olympic Champion

Baiul won the World Figure Skating Championships and the Ukrainian National Championships in 1993. She beat Nancy Kerrigan to win the women’s figure skating gold medal at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. After the Harding-Kerrigan scandal, which got a lot of attention because Tonya Harding’s husband and friends hurt Nancy Kerrigan on purpose, she won a big race.

Baiul was only 16 years old when she won the gold medal at the Lillehammer Olympics. She was only the second youngest figure skater in history to do that, after Sonja Henie, when she did it. (In 1998, Tara Lipinski, who won a gold medal at age 15, would be younger than Baiul.)

Baiul was charged with DUI because of the accident, but the charges were dropped after she finished an alcohol education program.

Baiul’s autobiography, Oksana, My Own Story, and Secrets of Skating, a look at her sport from the inside, both came out in the same year.
