Early Life

Nicolas Kim Coppola was born on January 7, 1964, in Long Beach, California. His parents were a dancer named Joy Vogelsang and a professor of literature named August Coppola. Marc and Christopher are Cage’s older brothers. He is the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, and when he was young, he often went to see his uncle at his home in San Francisco.

At 15, Cage took a summer class at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and fell in love with acting. He quit Beverly Hills High School to become an actor. In 1981, he made his first appearance on TV. He changed his name to Nicolas Cage so that he wouldn’t be confused with his famous uncle of the same name. He chose the name Cage to honor the superhero Luke Cage from comic books.

Cage is known for having a tough, edgy personality and loving method acting. He is said to have had two teeth pulled for his role in Birdy, cut his arm for Racing With the Moon (1984), and swallowed a live cockroach for Vampire’s Kiss (1992). He is also said to have destroyed a street vendor’s remote-controlled car in a fit of rage while practicing for his role as a mobster in The Cotton Club (1984).

Movies

‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High,’ ‘Raising Arizona,’ ‘Moonstruck’

Cage began his career in teen comedies, with his debut in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982, also with Sean Penn), followed by a starring role as a punk rocker in Valley Girl (1983). Francis Ford Coppola gave him a small role in his critically acclaimed film Rumble Fish (1983). He played his first serious dramatic role alongside Matthew Modine in Birdy (1984). This was followed by Coppola’s Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), the Coen brothers’ comedy Raising Arizona (1987), Moonstruck (1987, starring Cher), David Lynch’s bizarre Wild at Heart (1990), Vampire’s Kiss (1992) and the comedy Honeymoon in Vegas (1992).

Oscar for ‘Leaving Las Vegas’

By 1994, Cage was worth about $4 million per movie, but he agreed to be in Leaving Las Vegas (1995) by Mike Figgis for only $240,000 because the role was so good. He won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his role as alcoholic screenwriter Ben Sanderson.

‘The Rock,’ ‘Con Air,’ ‘Face/Off,’ ‘City of Angels’

Since 1995, Cage has made a number of action thrillers, such as The Rock (1996), Con Air (1997), John Woo’s Face/Off (1997), which starred John Travolta, and Brian De Palma’s Snake Eyes (1998). In 1998, he starred with Meg Ryan in the romantic movie City of Angels. After the poorly rated action movie 8MM and Martin Scorsese’s dark Bringing Out the Dead in 1999, Nicolas Cage is said to have made $20 million for the action movie Gone in 60 Seconds, which also starred Angelina Jolie.

‘The Family Man,’ ‘Adaptation’

In his next two movies, The Family Man, which came out at Christmas 2000, and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, which was set during World War II and starred Penelope Cruz, Cage played more traditional romantic leads. In December 2002, Nicolas Cage made his first movie as a director. It was called Sonny and cost $5 million. It was about a male gigolo who struggles to get away from his madam mother. Cage also played the grumpy screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and his twin brother Donald in the movie Adaptation.

‘National Treasure’ Franchise

After making the disappointing Windtalkers with Woo in 2002, Cage made a comeback with the well-received Matchstick Men (2003). The busy actor also played an archaeologist and historian who thinks that a treasure map is hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independence in Jon Turteltaub’s 2004 holiday hit National Treasure. In the 2007 movie National Treasure: Book of Secrets, he played the same character again.

‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ to ‘Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse’

Cage went on to star in big-budget films like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010), Season of the Witch (2011), and Stolen (2012), which earned lukewarm reviews at best. He continued his prolific output, earning praise for roles in smaller films such as the crime drama Joe (2013) and the violent revenge film Mandy (2018). Cage also contributed his voice to animated films such as The Croods (2013) and the acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).
