Early Life

Myers, a talented comedic writer and actor, was born on May 25, 1963, in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, to British parents. Eric, his father, who worked as an encyclopedia salesman, had a big influence on Myers. He shared his love of British comedy with his sons, Myers and his older brothers, Peter and Paul, and would occasionally wake the boys up late at night to watch Monty Python or Benny Hill.

Myers’ professional career began as a child actor in commercials. He joined the Toronto outpost of the popular Chicago comedy troupe Second City after graduating from high school. Myers ventured out on his own in the mid-1980s, taking his comedy to London, but returned to Toronto after his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Myers met Robin Ruzan, whom he later married, not long after his return.

TV and Movies

‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘Wayne’s World’

Myers auditioned for the popular comedy show Saturday Night Live in 1989, and he quickly won over the show’s creator, Lorne Michaels. That same year, he was cast as a featured player, alongside Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, and Kevin Nealon, among others.

Myers, who joined the show as a full-time cast member the following season, created several memorable characters. Dieter, the intellectual German TV host, Wayne Campbell, a rocker with his own cable access show, and Linda Richman, a character modeled after Myers’ own future mother-in-law, were all popular with viewers. Myers also did impressions, ranging from Barbra Streisand to Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones.

In 1992, Myers had his first hit film, Wayne’s World, while appearing on Saturday Night Live. On the big screen, he reprised his SNL role as Wayne Campbell, co-starring with fellow SNL cast member Dana Carvey. Garth, Campbell’s best friend and show sidekick, was played by Carvey. The pair quickly followed up on their box office success with Wayne’s World 2 in 1993.

‘Austin Powers’ Trilogy and ‘Shrek’

Myers left SNL after the 1994-95 season, spending a couple of years working on a new idea. A little later, he linked the Swinging 1960s and English spy thrillers to create Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997). In this spy spoof, Myers played the bespectacled title character, but also several other characters, including Powers’ nemesis Dr. Evil. Elizabeth Hurley plays Powers’ love interest in the popular comedy, and Michael York plays his spy boss. The film grossed more than $55 million in its opening weekend. In an interview with People Magazine, York described what it was like to work with Myers: “It’s rare that you can use words like ‘comic genius’ with any meaning, but it’s justified.”

Austin Powers returned to the screen two more times, in 1999’s Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember. At this time, Myers also launched another successful film franchise, the 2001 animated film Shrek, lending his voice to the title character, an ogre with a Scottish accent. Myers told Entertainment Weekly of his initial reaction to the project, “I thought it was the worst title in the world. It sounded like the noise I make after drinking 12 Canadian Molson beers. But I liked the idea of turning the classic fairy tale on its head, where the traditional villains become heroes.” Cameron Diaz portrayed Shrek’s mistress, Princess Fiona, in the film; the voice of Shrek’s sidekick, Donkey, belongs to Eddie Murphy.

In 2003, Myers turned to more family-friendly fare with the film adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic The Cat in the Hat. In that film, which also starred Alec Baldwin, Kelly Preston and Dakota Fanning, he played the magical cat who causes trouble. Myers then returned to the highly successful Shrek series with Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek Forever (2010).

‘The Love Guru’

In 2008, Myers returned to live action with The Love Guru (2008), which he co-wrote. The spiritual comedy starred Myers as Guru Pitka, an aspiring self-help idol, but the film was a commercial and critical failure. He played a British general in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds the following year (2009).

There has been much speculation about Myers’ next move. There have been rumors of a fourth installment in the Austin Powers franchise, as well as a stage musical prequel based on the scraggly toothed spy.
