Singer and actress Michelle Phillips was born Holly Michelle Gilliam on June 4, 1944, in Long Beach, California. Phillips lost her mother when she was only five years old. She was raised by a single father and lived in Mexico City for several years. Phillips eventually returned to Los Angeles, where she attended high school.
Versatile and athletic, Phillips played both sports and musical instruments in high school. During her high school years, she also tried her hand at modeling. In high school, she met a local musician and singer named John Phillips. He was a member of a group called The Journeymen. The teenage Michelle quickly fell in love with the 26-year-old musician, and the couple married in 1962, soon performing with her husband in a group called the New Journeymen, which also included folk singer Denny Doherty.
The Mamas and the Papas
With the addition of Cass Elliot in 1965, The New Journeymen became The Mamas and the Papas. With its beautiful four-part harmonies, the band became extremely popular. Michelle contributed to some of the band’s biggest hits, including “California Dreamin’.” In February 1966, that song peaked at number four on the Billboard pop charts. “Monday, Monday” became the group’s first number one hit two months later.
However, there was a lot of tension between the members of the group behind the scenes. Doherty and Michelle Phillips had an affair. The affair inspired the song “I Saw Her Again,” which John and Doherty co-wrote. Michelle and John Phillips split up and pursued other relationships for a while. Michelle became involved with Gene Clark of the Byrds, and tensions between her and John over this exacerbated the band’s problems.
Phillips was fired by her bandmates during the summer of 1966. While working on their second self-titled album, they replaced her with Jill Gibson, but Phillips was soon back with the band and with her husband. Deliver, their third album, featured several standout tracks, including a cover of the Shirelles’ “Dedicated to the One I Love,” which reached number two on the pop charts.
In June 1967, the group assisted in the organization of the now-legendary Monterey Pop Festival. The festival featured Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Otis Redding, and Ravi Shankar, among others. The event, held during the “Summer of Love,” drew many members of the burgeoning hippie scene. This festival, however, marked the beginning of the end for The Mamas and the Papas. The group gave its final live performance at the festival.
The Mamas and the Papas split up soon after a failed album in 1968. That same year, Phillips gave birth to her daughter Chynna. However, having a new addition to the family was insufficient to keep her and her husband together. In 1970, the couple divorced.
Phillips became involved with a number of leading figures in entertainment after her marriage to her first husband ended. She was in a relationship with actor Jack Nicholson and had a miscarriage. Phillips was also involved with actor Warren Beatty.
Phillips married actor Dennis Hopper in 1970. Hopper directed and co-starred in her feature film debut, The Last Movie (1971). Their marriage, however, lasted only eight days. Phillips has never publicly stated why their marriage ended so quickly.
After her small role in The Last Movie, Phillips landed a larger role in the crime drama Dillinger (1973) with Warren Oates and Ben Johnson. She received a Golden Globe nomination for her work in that film. In 1977, Phillips had some success in both television and film. She starred in the TV miniseries Aspen with Sam Elliott and in the biographical drama Valentino with Rudolf Nureyev. That same year, Phillips released a solo album, Victim of Romance.
In the late 1980s, Phillips became a fixture on the prime-time soap opera Knots Landing. In the series, she played the mother of Nicolette Sheridan. After Knots Landing ended in 1993, Phillips continued to work on the small screen. Michelle starred in such series as Star Trek: The Next Generation, Santa Barbara, Murder, She Wrote, Beverly Hills 90210 and 7th Heaven.
Phillips is the only surviving member of The Mamas and the Papas. Elliot died in 1974. She reunited with her ex-husband John and former lover Doherty in 1998 for The Mamas and the Papas’ induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. John passed away in 2001 and Doherty died in 2007.
In addition to her daughter, singer Chynna of Wilson Phillips fame, she is also the mother of actor Austin Hines and Aron Wilson. Austin is from her relationship with actor Grainger Hines. Phillips became Wilson’s foster mother in the 1980s and later adopted him. She is also the former step-mother of actress Mackenzie Phillips.
