Michelle Wingshan Kwan was born in California on July 7, 1980, in the city of Torrance. She is an Olympic figure skater. As a child, Kwan, whose parents came from Hong Kong, watched her older brother play ice hockey. She started skating when she was five years old. A year later, she entered and won her first figure skating competition. She came in eighth at the World Championships in 1994, when she was only 13. That earned her a spot as an alternate for the Olympics that year.

Olympic Medalist

Kwan quickly became the best figure skater in the world after her first trip to the Olympics. In 1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2003, she won the world title. Kwan, who was the reigning world champion at the time, fired her choreographer Lori Nichol and her longtime coach Frank Carroll just before the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. She didn’t get the gold medal again when she came in third, behind Irina Slutskaya of Russia and Sarah Hughes of the United States.

Since she lost in Salt Lake City, Kwan has kept competing. In 2004, she won gold at the U.S. Nationals and bronze at the World Championships. In February 2006, she had to drop out of the Olympics in Torino, Italy, because she hurt her groin very badly.
