Michael Anthony Strahan was born in Houston, Texas on November 21, 1971. Strahan, the youngest of six children, spent much of his childhood in Mannheim, Germany, where his father, Gene, an Army major, relocated the family when Strahan was nine years old.
Strahan, a gifted athlete with a large frame, returned to Texas for his senior year of high school. Despite having played organized football in Germany, Strahan lacked the experience of the other players on the Westbury High School team. Nonetheless, he demonstrated enough talent in the sport to earn a scholarship to play at Texas Southern University in Houston.
Strahan continued to make incredible strides as a college player. He dominated the line of scrimmage, tearing through offensive lines and frightening opposing quarterbacks.
Strahan’s play had caught the attention of NFL scouts by his senior year. The New York Giants selected the talented defensive player 40th overall in the NFL draft in the spring of 1993.
Pro Football Career
Strahan, who stands 6’5″, adapted quickly to the competition and his new football environment, just as he had in high school and college. He became a full-time starter for the Giants in his second year in the league. In 1997, he had his first double-digit quarterback sack season, with 14, earning him his first trip to the Pro Bowl.
Strahan would go on to be a dominant defensive force for the Giants over the next decade. After recording 15 sacks in 1998, he set an NFL single-season record with 22.5 sacks in 2001. Strahan finished his career with 141.5 quarterback sacks, ranking fifth in NFL history at the time of his final game.
Strahan’s career came to an end on a high note. After considering retirement, the Giants’ star veteran returned for the 2007 season. Strahan and quarterback Eli Manning led the team to its first Super Bowl victory in nearly two decades that year, defeating Tom Brady and the undefeated New England Patriots in the championship game.
Strahan announced his retirement from football shortly after the big win. “I just hope people remember him as a great defensive end who helped us win, a motivator and a team leader,” Strahan told reporters. “And you’ll miss me when I’m gone.”
Even before Strahan retired from football, it was widely assumed that he would have a successful career in television. Strahan was hired as a football analyst for FOX Sports after retiring. He’s also appeared in a number of commercials for the Subway sandwich chain.
‘Live! With Kelly and Michael’
Strahan appeared in the FOX sitcom Brothers in the fall of 2009. Strahan was then named the new co-host of Live! With Kelly in September 2012. He took over for longtime host Regis Philbin on the syndicated show Live! With Kelly and Michael, which was renamed Live! With Kelly and Michael.
Move to ‘Good Morning America’
In early 2014, Strahan was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He joined Good Morning America as a part-time correspondent in April of the same year. Strahan announced his departure from Live! With Kelly and Michael in April 2016 to join Good Morning America full-time. Ripa learned of his exit plan just minutes before going on air, which made the move both surprising and controversial. Needless to say, it strained their relationship.
Strahan, on the other hand, stated in a 2018 interview with E! that he has no regrets.
“There’s nothing I would do differently,” he admitted. “I handled it as professionally as you can handle it, and I’ve been a professional from the first day I arrived until the last day I left… I had the opportunity to do something that few people do: I get to evolve and try new, creative things.”
In the fall of 2018, he joined Sara Haines, a former panelist on The View, as the new co-host of GMA Day’s third-hour slot. In 2019, the show was renamed Strahan, Sara, and Keke after actress Keke Palmer joined as a third co-host.
Strahan was married twice, first to Wanda Hutchins (1992-1996) and then to Jean Muggli (1996-present) (1999-2006). He’s a father of four kids. He married Nicole Murphy, the ex-wife of actor and comedian Eddie Murphy, in 2009. The couple divorced in 2014.
