Early Life

Olsen was born in Sherman Oaks, California, on June 13, 1986. Olsen, the daughter of mortgage banker David Olsen and manager Jarnie Olsen, and her twin sister, Ashley, rose to become two of America’s most popular — and bankable — female personalities. When they were nine months old, they made their acting debut on the ABC family sitcom Full House, playing the youngest daughter, Michelle Tanner. The series aired for eight years, during which time the Olsen twins’ careers skyrocketed.

TV, Movie and Music Success

The girls had appeared in home videos, feature films, multi-media entertainment, and another ABC TV series, Two of a Kind, by the age of 12. They produced several straight-to-video movies, a line of musical detective videos called The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley, and the hugely successful You’re Invited to Mary-Kate and Ashley’s Party tapes under the name Dualstar Entertainment.

They also released a series of companion books to go along with the videos. Our First Video topped the Billboard video music chart in 1993, and was quickly followed by I Am The Cute One and Brother for Sale. It Takes Two was the twins’ big screen debut in 1995.

Aside from acting, the Olsens have become a major force in girl marketing. It is estimated that products bearing their names, such as computer games, dolls, and an enormously popular clothing line for Wal-Mart, generate approximately $1 billion in retail sales alone each year.

NYU and Entering Rehab

In the fall of 2004, the Olsen twins announced their intention to attend New York University. Olsen checked herself into a rehabilitation facility for anorexia shortly after hearing the news. The twins’ next feature film, New York Minute, was released in the aftermath of rumors about Olsen’s health.

Olsen and her sister purchased the minority shares of Dualstar in 2005, gaining complete control of the company. Olsen also ended her relationship with Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos III around this time. Olsen dropped out of school and returned to California to focus on business ventures with her company as a result of the break-up and changes at Dualstar.

Foray into Fashion

The sisters began appearing together in Badgley Mischka advertisements the following year. They also ventured into the world of high-end fashion by launching their own line, The Row, in 2006. In 2007, they launched Elizabeth and James, a contemporary clothing line named after their sister and brother. StyleMint and Olsenboye are two of their more affordable lines.

The Olsen Twins won the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Fashion Awards in 2012, and three years later they shared the Womenswear Designer of the Year award for The Row.

Other Projects

The twins published the book Influence in October of that year, introducing readers to the artists and designers who have influenced the Olsens over the last decade. The book, published by a division of the Penguin Young Readers Group, features celebrities such as Christian Louboutin, Lauren Hutton, and Bob Colacello. It quickly became a best-seller, and the twins embarked on a book promotion tour.

Olsen returned to acting in 2007, with regular appearances on the HBO television drama Weeds, a cameo on Samantha Who?, and a co-starring role in the film The Wackness (2008). Olsen appeared as one of the leads in the 2011 fantasy drama Beastly.

Personal Life

Olsen made headlines in January 2008 when her close friend, actor Heath Ledger, died of a prescription drug overdose. According to sources, Ledger’s staff contacted Mary-Kate through a speed-dial function on Ledger’s cell phone. Olsen then summoned her security team in New York to look into the matter. Later that day, Ledger was pronounced dead.

In 2012, Olsen began dating French banker Olivier Sarkozy, the half brother of former French President Nicholas Sarkozy. The couple got engaged in 2014 and married the following November. The ceremony took place in New York City. Sarkozy is the father of two children from a previous marriage. In May 2020, Olsen filed for divorce from Sarkozy.
