Carey was born on March 27, 1970, in Huntington, Long Island, New York, to Venezuelan aeronautical engineer Alfred Roy Carey and voice coach and opera singer Patricia Carey. She has two older siblings: Morgan, her brother, and Alison, her sister.
When Carey was three years old, her parents divorced. She astounded her mother by imitating her operatic singing at the age of two, and she began singing lessons at the age of four. Carey eventually developed a five-octave range in his voice.
Carey moved to Manhattan after graduating from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, in 1987, where she worked as a waitress and coat check girl and studied cosmetology during the day and wrote songs and actively pursued a music career at night.
Early Music Career: ‘Mariah Carey’ and ‘Emotions’
Carey and her friend, singer Brenda K. Starr, attended a CBS Records party when she was 18 years old. Starr persuaded Carey to bring one of her demo tapes. She wanted to give the tape to Jerry Greenberg at Columbia, but Tommy Mottola, the president of Columbia Records (later Sony), intercepted it before she got it.
After listening to the tape on the way home from the party, Mottola immediately signed Carey and began work on her debut album, Mariah Carey (1990), which included four No. 1 singles: “Vision of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” “Some Day” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry.”
Emotions, her second album, was released in 1992; the title track became her fifth No. 1 single, and it included the hits “Can’t Let Go” and “Make it Happen.”
‘Music Box,’ ‘Daydream,’ ‘Butterfly’
Carey appeared on MTV’s Unplugged in March 1992. This performance resulted in another No. 1 single (a cover of The Jacksons’ “I’ll Be There”) as well as an album and a home video. Her next album, Music Box (1993), pared back on the lavish studio production techniques heard on her previous albums while still featuring the No. 1 singles “Dreamlover” and “Hero.”
Merry Christmas, her November 1994 release, combined traditional Christian hymns with new songs. Daydream was released in 1995, and its first single, “Fantasy,” debuted at No. 1. Collaborations with R&B and hip-hop artists such as Wu-Tang Clan and Boyz II Men were also included (“One Sweet Day”).
Butterfly, Carey’s 1997 album, featured 11 of her original compositions and demonstrated her continued interest in hip-hop and R&B, including the Sean “Puffy” Combs-produced “Honey,” her 12th No. 1 hit. #1’s, Carey’s 1998 album, featured 13 previous chart-topping singles as well as the Academy Award-nominated duet “The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe)” with fellow pop diva Whitney Houston.
‘Glitter,’ Hospitalization and New Record Deal
Carey was admitted to a New York-area hospital in July 2001 and placed under psychiatric care after experiencing what her publicists described as a “physical and emotional collapse.” Carey had planned to promote her upcoming feature film debut, Glitter, and its soundtrack album, but she canceled all public appearances. Glitter’s release date was later pushed back from late August to late September 2001. After two weeks, Carey was released from the hospital.
Carey and EMI (the corporate owner of Virgin Records, with whom Carey had signed a reported $80 million contract in April 2001) ended their relationship in January 2002. Despite the fact that the film and soundtrack for Glitter failed to meet expectations in terms of box office and sales, Carey reportedly walked away from Virgin with nearly $50 million as part of her severance package. She signed a deal with Universal Music Group’s Island/Def Jam Records in May 2002.
More Albums: ‘Charmbracelet’ to ‘Caution’
In December 2002, Carey released her eighth album, Charmbracelet, which entered the charts at number three. The accompanying tour, her first in more than three years, began in June 2003.
It was followed by her 10th studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi, which became the best-selling album in the U.S. in 2005. With 2008’s Touch My Body (from her 11th studio album E=MC²), Carey surpassed Elvis Presley to become the second most number one hit singles in the United States after The Beatles. Other albums include Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (2009), Merry Christmas II You (2010), her second Christmas album, and Me. I Am Mariah … The Elusive Chanteuse (2014).
The singer proved that she continues to be one of the top acts in the industry with the release of her 15th studio album, Caution (2018), which debuted at #5 in the U.S. and has been mentioned in numerous “Albums of the Year” lists.
In December 2019, Carey reached another milestone when her enduring Christmas song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, with the 25 years between its release and its arrival at the top setting a new Billboard record for longevity.
Carey has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, she is the third best-selling female artist of all time.
‘American Idol,’ Vegas Residency and ‘Mariah’s World’
Carey was named a new judge for season 12 of the popular FOX television show American Idol in 2012, joining Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, and Keith Urban. She had a small role in Lee Daniels‘ biopic The Butler, about White House butler Eugene Allen, in 2013, and she voiced a character on the animated television series American Dad!
Carey signed a contract in January 2015 to begin a residency in Las Vegas in May 2016. She released a greatest hits collection featuring her No. 1 hits to coincide with her Caesar’s Palace show, #1 to Infinity. In 2015, she also starred in and directed A Christmas Melody, a Hallmark Channel holiday film.
Following her European tour, Carey launched The Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour and Mariah’s World, a television docu-series on E! in 2016. She also voiced the mayor in the 2017 animated film The Lego Batman Movie.
Carey revealed her long-hidden battle with bipolar II disorder in an April 2018 People cover story. After being hospitalized for her breakdown in 2001, the singer said she refused to acknowledge it for years. “Until recently, I lived in denial and isolation, constantly afraid that someone would expose me,” she explained. “It was too heavy a burden to bear, and I couldn’t do it any longer.”
Carey stated that she began undergoing therapy and taking medication on a regular basis after finally reaching out for help. “I’m just in a really good place right now,” she told People, “where I’m comfortable discussing my struggles with bipolar II disorder.” “I’m hoping we can get to a point where people who go through anything alone are no longer stigmatized. It can be very isolating. It doesn’t have to define you, and I’m not going to let it define or control me.”
Memoir and ‘The Rarities’
On September 29, 2020, Carey will release her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. “I want to tell the story of the moments – the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the blunders and the dreams that shaped who I am today,” she said. Carey also released the 32-track album The Rarities on October 2nd, in addition to the memoir.
Carey married Mottola in a lavish ceremony at Manhattan’s St. Thomas Episcopal Church in June 1993. In 1998, the couple divorced. Carey then dated Latin singer Luis Miguel for three years before splitting up in the summer of 2001.
After appearing in her music video for “Bye Bye,” Carey began dating rapper/actor Nick Cannon. After dating for less than two months, the couple married in a private ceremony in the Bahamas on April 30, 2008. Moroccan and Monroe Carey and Cannon were born in 2011.
After six years of marriage, the couple announced their separation in August 2014, and their divorce was finalized in 2016.
Carey got engaged to Australian businessman James Packer in New York City in January 2016, but the couple split in October of that year. After her engagement to Packer ended, Carey began dating backup dancer Bryan Tanaka, who appeared on her reality show Mariah’s World.
Carey volunteers for The Fresh Air Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides free summer vacations to disadvantaged children in New York City, and is the co-founder of Camp Mariah, one of the organization’s initiatives.

|Mariah Carey Car Collection||Price (USD)|
|Rolls Royce Drophead Coupe||$1,089,028|
|Porsche Cayenne SUV||$109,000,|
|Rolls Royce Phantom||$460,000|
1. Rolls Royce Drophead Coupe
Mariah Carey owns a black Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, which is a less formal version of a traditional Rolls Royce. Ian Cameron, the chief designer of the car, says that this Drophead Coupe is the best example of a romantic, high-performance car.
Perhaps that’s why Mariah and her husband Nick Cannon were reportedly first seen together in this car. Each Drophead Coupe is handmade, and Mariah chose black for the exterior color and black leather for the seats to match.
2. Maybach 62S
The prestigious Maybach 62 is the perfect car for people who want to stand out and feel like they own something special. Mariah Carey, a singer who can sing in many different keys, loves to ride in her super luxurious Maybach 62, and it looks like they hit the right note.
Mariah says that the Maybach 62 is the best mix of style, comfort and luxury, and she even says that of all the cars she owns, the Maybach is her favorite. The car ensures that the star always arrives in style and comfort, whether she is in the UK or the US. It’s like a business jet on wheels, as the powerful Maybach engine gives it majestic speed, amazing maneuverability and plenty of space.
3. Porsche Cayenne SUV
Nick Cannon, who is married to Mariah, is said to have bought her a large SUV called Porsche Cayenne as a special gift for her 40th birthday. It’s hard to believe that the charming beauty has already turned 40.
Mariah, who likes pink, must have liked the fact that her husband is interested in the color. This custom Porsche Cayenne SUV is pink, and the wheels are pink in the middle with a black lip. Too much pink in this luxurious and powerful five-seat mid-size car is sure to catch people’s attention, and it even looks good on the star who loves luxury.
4. Rolls Royce Phantom
Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon were reportedly seen leaving the hospital with their twins in a Rolls Royce Phantom that Nick had given to Mariah as a Christmas gift. The car’s license plates read “Mommy MC”.
The Rolls Royce Phantom was manufactured by Ian Cameron. It has a real sense of grandeur and occasion and is a very modern interpretation of a Rolls Royce. Mariah loves to drive around in style in her Phantom, and this is probably the first of many beautiful rides the twins will take in their mother’s expensive cars.
Mariah Carey owns a $45M waterfront estate. According to realtor.com, she also quietly purchased the colonial estate for $5.65 million in what appears to be an off-market deal last November.
In the midst of her divorce from Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey sells her Bel Air estate for almost $4 million less than the original asking price.
