Early Life

Manti Malietau Louis Te’o was born on January 26, 1991, in Laie, Hawaii. In his younger years, he attended a private high school in Hawaii and played soccer. He won many awards for his play.

In 2007, he was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year and State Defensive Player of the Year. As a running back, Manti totaled 90 tackles, five sacks, 400 yards and ten touchdowns his junior year. Colleges and recruiters from around the country took notice of him immediately.

Even before his senior year began, Te’o had heard from several colleges that they were interested in him. That year, he helped his high school win its first-ever state championship.

He also had 129 tackles, 11 sacks and four touchdowns. When he returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, it was a standout play. Manti was named Gatorade State Player of the Year for the second time and received other honors for all of those things.

After graduating from high school in 2009, he went to college at Notre Dame. The next year, as a freshman, he played in all 12 games and recorded 63 tackles. That was a great start for him, and he was named a Freshman All-American because of it.

In his sophomore year, he moved from the outside linebacker position to the inside linebacker position. That season, he tallied 133 tackles. That was also a career high that he would never surpass again. The following season he made 128 tackles and won more honors. In his senior year, he made 103 tackles and helped Notre Dame become the second-best scoring defense in the country.

When he left Notre Dame, Te’o was one of the most decorated defensive players in college soccer history. He won the Maxwell Award, the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Butkus Award, the Lombardi Award and the Walter Camp Award, among others. He also had 437 total tackles for Notre Dame.

Professional American Football Career

Although Manti Te’o was traded as a late first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft midway through the 2011 season, Te’o opted to return to Notre Dame after the 2011 season.

Te’o was also projected as a late first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft in the May 2012 preseason mock drafts. By midseason, he had moved up into the middle first round. Notre Dame has not selected a linebacker in the first round since Bob Crable in 1982.

Te’o signed with his agent, Tom Condon, at the end of the 2012 college soccer season. In preparation for the NFL Draft, he worked out at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Te’o was closely scrutinized by NFL teams at the NFL Combine. His time of 4.82 in the 40-yard dash was disappointing, but he promised at his Pro Day at Notre Dame that he would “do much better.”

After the Combine, Sports Illustrated predicted Te’o would fall out of the first round. According to ESPN’s Todd McShay, Te’o ran faster at Notre Dame’s Pro Day on March 26. (hand-measured 4.75 and 4.71).

San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers selected him in the second round, 38th overall, as the second inside linebacker in the draft behind Alec Ogletree. “It’s the ideal situation. My parents are welcome to come and watch and I can go back home, after all, this is San Diego,” Te’o said on draft day. Until Jaylon Smith was selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, he was the highest drafted Notre Dame linebacker since Demetrius DuBose in 1993.

Te’o signed a four-year contract with the Chargers on May 10, 2013. The contract was worth just over $5 million and included a signing bonus of $2,141,768 and over $3.1 million in guaranteed money. He is the second Chargers linebacker of Polynesian descent, following Junior Seau.

Te’o injured his right foot in the Chargers’ preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 8, causing him to miss the remainder of the preseason and the regular-season opener against the Houston Texans. Te’o made his NFL debut in week four against the Dallas Cowboys. The Chargers won the game, and Te’o had three tackles.

Te’o finished the season with 61 tackles and four pass breakups in 13 starts.

The New Orleans Saints

Te’o signed a two-year contract with the New Orleans Saints on March 21, 2017. He led the Saints in tackles for loss during the 2017 season. He was a healthy scratch for all but five games of the 2018 season and his contract was not renewed when it expired.

On December 3, 2019, New Orleans re-signed Te’o after he did not play for the majority of the 2019 season.

Chicago Bears

Personal Life and Girlfriend

Te’o became famous because he could make everyone believe that he had a girlfriend at Notre Dame who was dying of leukemia. The public and even his own parents did not know that he had never met this woman in person.

The whole relationship took place online. Manti said that woman’s name was Lennay Kekua and that she was told she had leukemia after being treated for injuries sustained in a car accident.

At first, this story was believed by the media and many articles were written about this sad relationship. But it was not long before reporters began to research Lennay Kekua, and they soon found out that this person did not exist. As the story came together, it became clear that a man had posed as a woman to date Te’o online.

The media immediately switched gears and Manti had to issue a statement saying that he did not know the woman was not real and that he was the victim of a hoax. He later told his father that he had met the woman in person, which was a lie. When he left a voice message on Manti’s phone, the man pretending to be the invented woman used a trick to make himself sound like a woman.

Manti got engaged to his real girlfriend, Jovi Nicole Engbino, in 2020. Later that year, they actually got married.
