Mama Cass Net Worth at Death – Did She Go Bankrupt?

Mama Cass Net Worth

Mama Cass had an estimated net worth of $20 Thousand at the time of her death. In spite of her bankruptcy, her daughter has reportedly earned seven figures through her royalties over the years. During her lifetime, Mama Cass earned most of her income from album sales and concerts.

Cass Elliot, better known as “Mama Cass,” was born Ellen Naomi Cohen on September 19, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland. After initially pursuing a career as an actress, Elliot became a folk singer. In 1963 she became known as a member of an innovative folk trio called The Big Three.

After recording two albums with her bandmates Tim Rose and James Hendricks, the band broke up and she formed a new group, Cass Elliot and the Big Three, which also included Hendricks, Denny Doherty and Zal Yanovsky. This group, which renamed itself The Mugwumps, played mainly at a Washington, D.C., nightclub called The Shadows. The Mugwumps disbanded in early 1965 after releasing only one single, and Elliot began working as a solo singer.

To calculate the net worth of Mama Cass, subtract all her liabilities from her total assets. Investments, savings, cash deposits, and any equity she has in a house, car, or other similar asset are included in the total assets. All debts, such as personal loans and mortgages, are included in total liabilities.

The Mamas and the Papas

Elliot began performing with former Mugwump Doherty and the two other members of his new band, The New Journeymen, John and Michelle Phillips, in mid-1965. By the end of 1965, the foursome known as The Mamas and the Papas had become an overnight success, releasing a hit debut single, “California Dreamin’,” and album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears.

The Mamas and Papas remained together until 1968, releasing five albums and a string of Top 10 singles such as “Monday, Monday,” “I Saw Her Again,” and “Dedicated to the One I Love.” Various issues within the group, including romantic jealousy (Elliot was reportedly in love with Doherty; Doherty later became involved with Michelle Phillips), drug abuse, alcoholism, and Elliot’s constant struggle with her weight, led to the group’s eventual dissolution in 1971.

Death

Elliot was discovered dead in her hotel room on July 29, 1974, following a concert series at the London Palladium. She died of heart failure at the age of 32.

Personal Life

Elliot had been married twice before, once to Hendricks of The Big Three and The Mugwumps (1963-1968) and once to Baron Donald von Wiedenman (1971). In 1967, she gave birth to a daughter, Owen Elliot Kugell. When The Mamas and the Papas were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, Owen accepted her mother’s award.
