Early Life

Salvatore Lucania was born to Antonio and Rosalia Lucania on November 24, 1897, in Lercara Friddi, Sicily, Italy. He was the youngest of four siblings.

His father worked in a sulfur mine in Sicily. Salvatore’s family immigrated to the United States when he was nine years old and settled in New York City.

When he was 14, he dropped out of school and began working odd jobs to make ends meet. He quickly began making money on the streets and fell into bad company.

He formed his own gang as a teenager and was also a member of the infamous ‘Five Points Gang.’ Luciano’s interest, however, was not limited to petty crime; for ten cents per week, he offered Jewish children protection from Italian and Irish gangs.

Later Life

Lucky Luciano quickly became known as a ruthless thug and was arrested several times on charges ranging from assault to illegal gambling, blackmail, and robbery. He did not, however, spend any time in prison.

In the 1920s, a constitutional amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. Because there was a high demand for alcohol, the prohibition provided a lucrative opportunity for criminals to sell alcohol illegally.

Luciano had made friends with many future Mafia leaders by this point, including Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. His reputation as a rising figure in New York’s criminal underbelly landed him a job as a gunman for Lower Manhattan gang boss Joe Masseria. He also began working for gambler Arnold “The Brain” Rothstein around this time.

Rothstein recognized the illegal opportunities presented by the alcohol prohibition and instructed Luciano on how to run a bootleg alcohol business. With Rothstein’s help, Luciano, Costello, and Genovese launched their own bootlegging operation.

Luciano’s criminal career flourished under Rothstein’s supervision, and his bootlegging operation grew to be the largest in New York, extending into Philadelphia. Among other things, he was involved in illegal gambling, prostitution, and narcotics distribution. He was earning more than $12 million per year by the mid-1920s.

He was kidnapped by a group of men in October 1929 and beaten, stabbed, and had his throat slit. He was abandoned on a beach and discovered by a police officer, who took him to the hospital. Although it was unclear who ordered the attack, some speculated that it was the work of crime boss Masseria.

Masseria was embroiled in a bloody gang war with rival boss Salvatore Maranzano. Luciano decided to take advantage of the situation and assassinated Masseria in April 1931. He had Maranzano murdered by four Jewish gunmen six months later. Luciano rose to the position of capo di tutti capi after eliminating two powerful crime lords (boss of all the bosses).

By the mid-1930s, he had formed a national crime syndicate or cartel with the leaders of other crime families. Thomas E. Dewey was appointed as a special prosecutor to investigate organized crime in 1935. Dewey didn’t waste any time gathering evidence against Luciano.

In May 1936, Luciano and eight members of his gang were put on trial. He was found guilty of extortion and prostitution and sentenced to 30 to 50 years in prison. He was then transferred to Dannemora, New York’s ‘Clinton Correctional Facility.’

When ‘World War II’ broke out, the US government struck a secret deal with Luciano, who was imprisoned. He agreed to use his criminal contacts in Italy to help the Allies and facilitate negotiations. Luciano was transferred from the ‘Clinton Correctional Facility’ in Clinton, New York to the ‘Great Meadow Correctional Facility’ in Comstock, New York.

In exchange for a commutation of his sentence, Luciano promised to fully assist the Navy. As a result, it is believed that he provided mafia contacts in Sicily to the US military and also informed his contacts to coordinate with the US military.

He went to Italy after the war before traveling to Cuba. In 1947, the Cuban government deported him to Italy, where he spent the rest of his life.

Personal Life & Girlfriends

In 1948, he fell in love with Igea Lissoni, an Italian nightclub dancer. The couple began living together, and rumors circulated that they were married. Despite his feelings for Igea, he continued to have affairs with other women. In 1959, Igea died of cancer. Luciano was fortunate not to have children.

On January 26, 1962, Lucky Luciano died of a heart attack.
