Early Life

Bowery felt isolated from his conservative surroundings from a young age. He first became acquainted with London and the New Romantic movement through British fashion magazines.

After taking a fashion course in high school, Bowery moved to London in 1980. He became a well-known fixture at local clubs, thanks in part to his eccentric outfits.

Bowery quickly made friends with fellow clubbers Guy Barnes (aka Trojan) and David Walls in London. Bowery outfitted his friends in his creative designs as the three men moved in together. The trio became known as the “Three Kings” in the London club scene.

Bowery achieved some success as a designer, exhibiting several collections at London Fashion Week, as well as in New York and Tokyo. However, he was best known as a club promoter and London nightlife fixture. Bowery opened the disco club nightclub Taboo in 1985. Taboo, which began as an underground party, quickly became London’s answer to Studio 54. Taboo was known for defying sexual convention and embracing what Bowery referred to as “polysexual” identities.

In addition to his club activities, Bowery was active in performance art and was well-connected in London’s art and theater circles. He frequently performed in face paint, lurex clothing, and masks, relishing the opportunity to shock and defy convention. Bowery was also a model, posing naked in some of Lucien Freud’s later portraits.

Personal life & Wife

Leigh Bowery, who had long identified as gay, married his friend Nicola Bateman in May 1994. Only a few close friends were aware that Bowery had AIDS prior to his death from AIDS-related illness on New Year’s Eve in 1994, seven months after his marriage to Bateman.
