Early Life

Kristine Tsuya Yamaguchi, better known as Kristi Yamaguchi, was born in Hayward, California, on July 12, 1971. She grew up in Fremont, which is close by. She was born with clubbed feet, which were fixed with casts. After seeing her older sister Lori on the ice, she started skating at age 6 as a form of physical therapy.

Skating Career

Lori quit the sport quickly, but Yamaguchi’s love of ice skating kept getting stronger. She started competing when she was in junior high, and in 1986, she and her partner, Rudy Galindo, won the junior pairs title at the U.S. championships.

Two years later, at the World Junior Championships, they won the same title again, and Yamaguchi also won the singles event. In both 1989 and 1990, Yamaguchi and Galindo won the senior pairs title at the U.S. championships.

Yamaguchi moved to Alberta, Canada, in 1991 to train with Christy Ness. She only worked on her singles skating at that time. She won the World Championships that year, and at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, she won a gold medal.

Yamaguchi went on tour with Stars on Ice from 1992 to 2002 after she won the Olympics. Yamaguchi was made a U.S. citizen. In 1998 and 1999, the Figure Skating Hall of Fame and the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame were both opened.

She was a Goodwill Ambassador at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 2005, she was inducted into the U.S. Hall of Fame for Olympians.
