Early Life & Career
Kristen Jaymes Stewart was born in Los Angeles, California on April 9, 1990. Her parents, John, a stage manager, producer, and director, and Jules, a scriptwriter, immersed their daughter in the Hollywood scene from a young age. She made her first television appearance at the age of eight, after a talent scout noticed her performance in a grade school Christmas play. Soon after, she landed a supporting role in the Disney Channel film The Thirteenth Year (1999).
Stewart landed a larger role in the independent film The Safety of Objects two years later (2001). But it wasn’t until 2002 that the actress got her big break, when she was cast as the lead in the blockbuster drama Panic Room, alongside screen veterans Jodie Foster, Forest Whitaker, and Jared Leto. Critics praised Stewart’s understated and solid performance as the diabetic, troubled teen, and the film grossed a respectable $95 million at the box office.
‘Cold Creek Manor’
Stewart then agreed to play the daughter of Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone in Cold Creek Manor, another suspense drama (2003). Although Stewart and her co-stars gave strong performances, the plot was panned by critics and fans and performed poorly at the box office. Stewart had two more low-performing films the following year: the lighthearted teen romp Catch That Kid (2004) and the adventure film Undertow (2004), which, despite favorable reviews, went almost entirely to video.
‘Into the Wild,’ ‘The Cake Eaters’
Stewart demonstrated her versatility as a performer in Speak (2005), a Showtime special about a teen who stops speaking after a sexual assault. She appeared in the sci-fi film Zathura the same year, followed by the drama Fierce People (2006). Stewart landed the role of a teenage commune dweller in the critically acclaimed biopic Into the Wild after appearing in several more minor box-office successes (2007). Stewart was thrust back into the spotlight by the role, and the following year she appeared in Mary Stuart Masterson’s The Cake Eaters.
‘Twilight,’ ‘Adventureland,’ ‘The Runaways’
Stewart had a successful year in 2008, starring alongside Robert De Niro in the Hollywood satire What Just Happened? and then alongside teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson in the adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s successful book series Twilight (2008). The novels, which follow a teen who falls in love with a charming vampire, already have a devoted following. Stewart quickly became a romantic icon for thousands of teenagers, catapulting her to A-List stardom.
In fact, her popularity in the role overshadowed other projects in the works, including a starring role in the comedy Adventureland (2009), a role in Welcome to the Rileys (2009), which starred James Gandolfini, and her performance as rocker Joan Jett in the 2010 biopic The Runaways, which starred Dakota Fanning.
‘Twilight’ Sequels and Romance With Robert Pattinson
The Twilight Saga: New Moon was released in 2009 and was a bigger success than the first installment. The film grossed over $290 million in the United States alone, and Stewart and her co-star Pattinson found themselves with an ever-growing young fan base. There was also much media speculation about the pair’s off-screen relationship.
Three more Twilight films followed, with the final installment arriving in 2012. The previous film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, grossed over $140 million in its first weekend alone. According to the Box Office Mojo website, the Twilight films earned more than $3 billion worldwide.
‘Snow White and the Huntsman’
Stewart had some box-office success in another famous role the same year the Twilight series ended. She co-starred in Snow White and the Huntsman with Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron as the famous fairy tale heroine. The film, which transformed Snow White into a sort of warrior, became one of the summer’s most popular hits.
Stewart, on the other hand, faced a huge personal backlash later that year when it was revealed that she had been involved with the married director of Snow White and the Huntsman, Rupert Sands. Stewart publicly apologized to her Twilight co-star and boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, for the indiscretion. Despite the apology, the couple called it quits soon after.
‘Still Alice,’ ‘Café Society,’ ‘Charlie’s Angels’
Stewart starred in three films in 2014: Camp X-Ray, Clouds of Sils Maria, and Still Alice. The following year, she appeared in the indie film Anesthesia as well as American Ultra, both of which she co-starred in with her former Adventureland co-star Jesse Eisenberg. Stewart also appeared in Woody Allen’s Café Society (2016) and the critically acclaimed Lizzie (2018), a biographical thriller about accused ax murderer Lizzie Borden, before returning to mainstream fare with the Charlie’s Angels reboot in 2019.
Stewart will play Princess Diana in an upcoming film about the royal couple’s divorce from Prince Charles.
Stewart dated a number of women following her famous relationship and breakup with Twilight co-star Rob Pattinson. She is bisexual and has dated model Stella Maxwell as well as screenwriter Dylan Meyer.
