Early Years

Kristen Mary Houghton was born on November 5, 1955, in San Diego, California. Robert Houghton, her father, was an aircraft engineer. Karen Jenner is Jenner’s younger sister.

Jenner’s mother sold the family home in San Diego’s Point Loma neighborhood when her parents divorced in 1962. Jenner and her mother then relocated to Clairemont, California, where she attended Longfellow Elementary School.

Jenner developed a cancerous bone tumor a year after her parents’ divorce. Thankfully, the cancer did not spread. Jenner was given a clean bill of health after undergoing surgery to remove the tumor.

Jenner’s mother remarried businessman Harry Shannon a few years later. Shannon’s business partner stole the entire company’s money three months after moving to Oxnard, California. As a result, the family decided to return to San Diego.

Jenner was far more interested in becoming a wife and mother when she graduated from Clairemont High School than in attending college.

Marriage to Robert Kardashian

Jenner married successful high-powered attorney Robert Kardashian on July 8, 1978, whose best friend was athlete and actor O.J. Simpson. Jenner grew close to Simpson’s wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.

Jenner and Kardashian had four children from their marriage: three daughters, Kourtney, Kim, and Khloé, and a son, Robert. In 1991, the couple divorced.

Jenner was devastated in the 1990s when she learned that Brown Simpson had been murdered and that Simpson was being charged with her murder.

Kardashian rose to national prominence as a member of Simpson’s defense team during his high-profile trial. Simpson was eventually acquitted of criminal charges but found liable in the subsequent civil case. Kardashian died of esophageal cancer in 2003.

Marriage to Bruce Jenner

Jenner married former Olympic gold medalist decathlete Bruce in 1991, shortly after her divorce from Kardashian was finalized. As a result, she became the stepmother of Bruce’s two previous marriages’ children: Burt, Casey, Brandon, and Brody Jenner. Jenner and Bruce also had two daughters, Kendall and Kylie.

Jenner married Bruce, and she became not only his wife, but also his manager. Jenner was soon negotiating endorsement deals and promoting his racing career, in addition to directing the family franchise.

However, as seen on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Jenner and Bruce’s marriage was fraught with difficulties. The couple separated in June 2013 and divorced in December 2014. When Bruce came out as transgender in April 2015, the reality of their breakup became even clearer. That fall, he changed his name to Caitlyn and began to identify as female. Caitlyn Jenner was given a spinoff series called I Am Cait, which documented her gender transition.

Reality Star and ‘Momager’

Jenner met producer Ryan Seacrest in 2007, and the result was the wildly popular reality TV show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which featured Jenner and her family living the unusual daily lives of celebrity entrepreneurs. Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami (later renamed Kourtney and Kim Take Miami), Kourtney and Kim Take New York, and Khloé and Lamar are all spin-offs from the show. Jenner’s two youngest daughters also had spinoffs.

Jenner is a self-described “momager,” managing her biological children’s business ventures and public appearances. She claims to have coined the term. The Kardashian family’s business ventures range from clothing, skin care, and fragrance lines to the tell-all autobiographies Kardashian Konfidential and Kris Jenner… And All Things Kardashian.

Jenner debuted her own daytime TV talk show in 2013. However, the program did not attract a large enough audience to be renewed.
